I’m a Victim

Posted on December 3rd, 2004 in Old-General by Fred McKinnon

Hey Ya’ll …

So – just the other day I was telling someone that I was surprised that I’d never really had any fraud charges on my credit card. We see that stuff happen a lot (being online and all) … but as for me personally – it’s never really happened. (knock on wood)

Until a few days ago – I’m downloading transactions from my corporate card into our financial software and WHAT? I didn’t order anything from “The Video Professor” … and “who is that?”. Several charges later – I realized – it’s time to call AMEX.

No problem – they credited back the charges right away and cancelled the card. No clue as to how the info was compromised, although I have my suspicions.

At any case – here’s the funny part. I’ve learned that a lot of folks use a stolen credit card and they order stuff in the name of the cardholder – just to see if the card is OK. If the order is approved – the hacker knows the card is valid, and goes about using it elsewhere. Or sometimes – they just want to be a nuisance.

I guess they had a slight shopping spree w/ my card before I cancelled it … today, I got some real goodies in my PO Box.

Let’s see … Merry Christmas to me … not really – today’s deliveries including some “Jevene’ – The Essence of Youth” body cream and some Nexiderm anti-wrinkle cream. (is somebody trying to tell me something?)

Sheez – some folks have nothing better to do I guess.

For the Kingdom,
Fred
