Hi Fred,

It's good to know that at least SOME of us out there, serving (and I do mean serving) in the church as music and worship facilitators actually grasp what the real meat of relevance is - Jesus Christ - who never changes and is always relevant in every situation of life, regardless of how we try to package him. I think, as I said on my blog (www.dandykatkonnection.blogspot.com) that as long as we ALWAYS put Jesus as The Main Event, then how we color the worship service is less important than WHOM we color it with.

Blessings,
Dan McGowan

For Jon:
Jon -
Thanks for the comment. Lots of my wife's family is in Monroe, so I know the stretch between Gainesville and Winder well ... as my wife always says "you can't get to monroe without going through ... "WINDER" (grab and twist your nose).

May the Lord bless your endeavor - planting a work is never easy but the harvest field is right. There is a great strategy in what you are doing ... just remember that your true success will not be in how "contemporary" you look (this coming from a guy who is 100% contemporary in worship, setting, etc) but how many lives are changed for the sake of the Kingdom.

For the Kingdom,
Fred

God word, Fred. And I didn't mean "good" word - God word is better. We "re-define" words too often. I can't escape the scripture that says "remember the old ways - the good ways". I don't remember where it is, but if we don't try and use that to stay in one place and stagnate, but move forward while BUILDING on the old, then we will forever more be relevant. God is relevant, and He never changes. Yet we have re-defined the word to mean that we have to change God to fit into our own understanding of what we can see as relevant in our own eyes.

"There is a way that seems right (relevant) to man . . . "

Thanks for causing me to be thoughtful of this concept.

Fred, I appreciate the link to your blog. It made me consider adding one myself. This discussion is very "relevant" to me as I'm starting a new church from scratch here in Winder, GA. All of the churches in this area between Lawrenceville and Athens are traditional in presentation (though several, including the one I currently serve at, would consider themselves closer the edge of contemporary than traditional). Since Gwinnett has run out of room, they're moving to Barrow and I feel the need to respond with a "relevant" style of ministry.

I will be keeping an eye on further discussions about this. I do want to be timeless.

Very well said. I would even go as far to say that sometimes in our efforts to be relevant, we end up creating yet another wineskin. It wasn't long ago we were supposed to be God Chasers, now we're supposed to be relevant. I certainly have nothing against those things. I think I'm gonna shoot for real and honest. Also like in the story of you playing the old hymm, relevance goes in both directions. Jesus said you don't pour new wine in an old wineskin and that is true, but He also said He wanted both the new and the old to be preserved. You gave a good word Fred.
