Aaarrggggh! Someone Pop the Bubble … PLEASE!

Posted on April 6th, 2006 in Faith by Fred McKinnon

Hello everyone -

This morning’s post is a big-time “Rant and Rave” for me. Yep – I’m climbing up on a soapbox. But there’s a truth here, and it drives me nuts. More than ever before … it’s driving me nuts.

OK – so you’ve all heard of “MySpace” … I’ve posted about it here. I’ve got a profile there, and yeah – you see it featured on the news 1-2 times per week. Sure – kids get on there and disclose all sorts of personal info that shouldn’t be public. Predators surf there to find their prey. People cuss, spit and chew on MySpace (grin). There are profiles of people who are passionately in LOVE with God (lots of them are my “Friends” … go to my profile and view my “Friends” at the bottom and you’ll find some of them) … and lots of them are seekers – they don’t quite know what they want. Some are rebels, hellions … but they are all PEOPLE. PEOPLE who GOD LOVES and although there is darnkess there, the LIGHT desperately needs to be shined.

Hence, my rave.

Yesterday, I posted an email to “Worshiptalk” – an email subscription list sponsored by WorshipTogether.Com about “MySpace”. I was curious how many of the “WorshipTalkers” were also “MySpacers”. I got about 2 responses. Then, one girl forwaded along a press release she’d seen about a “Christian Alternative to MySpace”. (there it is … that sick feeling in my stomach …)

OK – before anyone starts to freak out … let me say that I think the idea of having a site for Christians is great. Christian fellowship is not just important, it’s vital. That’s one of the things that the “church” is all about – building one another up, encouraging one another, strengthening, etc. But sheez – a “Christian Alternative”?

Rather than type more, let me just copy/paste …

First, the “press release” … and then my “response”. What do YOU think?

Subject: Christian Alternative to MySpace

XIANZ.COM launches first phase of its social networking platform. Currently
by invitation only, already over 3000 members.

Nashville, TN March 27, 2006– With MySpace becoming one of the most popular
sites on the Internet, it seems that the social networking phenomenon is
here to stay. However, along with it’s popularity comes the myriad of
concerns about private information being posted online. It could be a
parent’s
worst nightmare.

Enter XIANZ.COM, a Christian based social networking site that offers the
same functionality and much more than sites like MySpace.com, Facebook.com,
and Friendster.com . But most importantly, Xianz offers a safe environment
for teens and people of all ages to interact with others of the same or
similar interests. Among other safeguards, settings can be specified that
allow only people of the same age range to communicate.

Features include: Customized profiles with photos, video and music, private
and instant messaging, online Blogs, personal message boards, birthday
reminders & invites, shared interests, friends lists & shout outs, groups,
events and listings. A large music module will be integrated in the next
few weeks.

Currently in Beta mode, XIANZ.COM can only be accessed by invitation from a
current member.

And finally – my response. I’m sure I’ll get some good hard flames about this … and I’ll keep the blog updated. I expect some people to agree (hopefully), but I’m fully aware that the majority will probably stone me … what a heretic I am (ha ha)

From Fred McKinnon, via email to “WorshipTalk” email list, and now … to the public via my blog …

it seems like that anything that comes up, “Christians” have to have their own alternative. For every opportunity that evolves where Christians can get out there and be exposed – get out there w/ the sinners – get out there and mix with the lost, hurting, and dying … the Christians (I’m one of them) come along and add another room to their bubble, and all the Christians flock to yet another new room in their isolation bubble.

I’ll certainly checkout the new site – because Christian communion and fellowship is not just important – it’s VITAL. But I’ll spend more time on “MySpace” … because that’s where the lost are.

I was full-time on church staff for years … and I’m still heavily involved. I had a 1-year sabbatical where i came off staff completely … and it was the best move of my life. I realized just how “isolated” I was … I realized I had no “lost” friends … no “lost” relationships … no “clue” what culture was outside of my church-bubble. I realized I’d not prayed w/ someone for salvation in years … but I was a great “christian”.

Oh well – I sure don’t want to start another flaming thread – and please don’t misunderstand … THANKS for sending the link, because I’d not heard of that site, and I have EVERY INTENTION of checking it out and maybe getting involved. But it just cracks me up … I’d rather see all those Christians at “XIANZ.COM” come and INVADE MySpace … I’d rather see the Victoria Secret and sleezy dating ads on MySpace be bought up by CHRISTIAN companies and make a statement where the WORLD is hanging out.

Ok … I’ll step down off my soap box now.

For the Kingdom,
Fred

Well, there you have it. My rant and rave for Thursday. I tried to go and join the Xianz community, but it was closed to the public – you could only join if you got an “invite” from one of the members. Sounds kinda like a lot of churches in America. “let’s be careful who we welcome here … we don’t want to get ourselves dirty” …

Well in closing, let me make it clear … I’m also a businessman, and I applaud the visionaries behind the site. I’m sure it will do well … it seems there is some advertising on the site already, and you can pay fees to upgrade your membership, so it will likely become profitable very quickly. Also, I have to remind you that I’ve already said I think it’s important for Christians to fellowship, and there are measures we should take in not allowing ourselves to be conformed to the world. My grief isn’t with the site, the site creators, etc … it’s with those of us who will flock to something like that; yet, will stay far away from something like “MySpace” where we might actually influence someone … where we might be challenged into giving an intelligent answer as to what we believe … where we may have the opportunity to be light in the darkness.

For the Kingdom,

Fred

‘sup Fred…I wanted your first comment not to be a “flame” but to be one of agreement…We as christians need to be out there in the world leaving a “love stain” on the world…not “hiding” out in our bubble (again, not that that’s bad…christian fellowship is awesome) but we (especially me) need to get out there…”love, embrace, serve” (…from Jay’s message, thanks Jay). And love people with the love of Christ! Shine your light!

…but i’m slow and it ended up being your 2nd comment! Ha!

Matthew 11:18,19 (NKJ) “For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say ‘He has a demon’. “The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say,’Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a FREIND of tax colectorsand siners!’ But wisdom is justified by her children”

Wow think about that last statement by Jesus. “Wisdom is justified by her children. Some translations say “works” or “Fruit”
The Bible says in red that means Jesus said it. That we are Salt and Light. We are in the world but not of the world. We are Ambassadors of Christ.
How do we Christians (ones who are like Christ or little Christ’s) think that we are going to change this dark world. Did not the Lord tell us to “GO” in to all the world and proglaim the Good News to all.
If we as Christians continue to hang out with “Us four and now more”. We are being Dis-Obedient to His comand to “GO”.
Yes it’s true we need the fellowship of other believers. But whn we leave those settings (online or offline) We then must “Go” and call all who come to the marrige supper of the lamb. Romans 5:8 says “But God demonstrates His own love tward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
For my self I am so thankfull that God used a man to come in to my world of “Sex drugs and rock-n roll” to tell me the Good news about what Jesus did for me.
I believe that if all of us would just stop to think about where God has saved us from and what He has delivered us into that would compell us to take His comand and run into the highway and byways and shout it from the roof tops that Jesus is Lord.

Let us be accused as the believers in the book of “Acts” that we turn this world upside down for Jesus.

I’m leary of full-on accepting and promoting something that appears to be a safe, religious thing to do. Jesus completely understood religion and he had nothing good to say about it. Jesus never founded a monastery, commune, or even a church (think deeply about that last one…Church vs. church). He got dirty. He walked into villages that no good Jew what have set one foot in.

Could we be creating white-washed walls in this process? Jesus used this figure when he said to the Pharisees, “You are like tombs, white-washed on the outside, but within full of dead men’s bones…” (Matthew 23:27). In the ancient near-east, tombs were located above ground and painted bright white to help the Jews avoid coming in contact with them, thus making them, according to custom and law, unclean and unfit for temple worship.

Will touching myspace make us unclean? Would we have touched the leper or had a chat with the woman at the well? Could He use us to reach the unloved and unwelcome-at-our-church crowd?

Check out MY myspace, if you dare…www.myspace.com/jaysellers

Yes and Amen! I am grieved to no end at how much the “Christian” community isolates itself from the very people who need them the most! I believe it is a tactic that the enemy has covered us to the point of being blind, miserable and naked – not to mention pompous, arrogant and full of pride.

Getting out there amongst ‘em is the only way to win them and SHOW them something more excellent – not just talk about it.

Awesome! I have friends who rail myspace, but then admire and almost worship, it seems sometimes, people from IHOP and worship leaders and stuff who are active participants in myspace. I find it hilarious yet sad.

YES, YES, YES!! Coming from the largest church in Las Vegas, (they don’t call it Sin City for nothing…I can assure you), I totally agree with your comment. We need to expose people to the truth of Christ every chance we get…even if it’s doing something as simple, or as unimposing as creating a POSITVE, Christ-centered MySpace account. Seekers can see the light of Christ through little things like that….they may not know what it is they are seeing yet, but it opens the door to an opportunity to share the truth and love of Christ. Community within the body of Christ is important..no doubt…It’s one of the 5 core values at our church here in Vegas…But if the church is spending all its time consumed in itself, and not Seeking and Saving the lost….is it REALLY the church?

Great post. Though we definitely need fellowship with other Christians in order to learn what Jesus taught, we also have to walk in the world as Jesus did. As we are becoming disciples, we need to accurately live what Jesus taught so that those in the world cannot help but recognize us as disciples of Christ and be drawn to Him.

Vision: The members of the body of Jesus Christ – the church – effectively performing their roles and responsibilities.

Ministry: Develop disciples in the image of Jesus.
    Matthew 28: 19-20
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.

Mission: Depict Jesus accurately to the world.
    John 13:35
“By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Some of these points are not well taken. Taking Christ to the streets is one thing, but there needs to be a “place” to center around – such as a church, youth group, or website. If all church members decided to congregate in crack/gang Harlem each week they would be in physical jeopardy. A safe place is a safe place. Ants have an ant farm, they do their work outside of the farm, but have a farm to return to all the same. Slog it out in the trenches then return to base camp I say.
