Way Cool Surprise

Posted on September 28th, 2006 in General by Fred

Hey Ya’ll!

I got a way cool surprise this week - well, last week rather - that’s how long it’s taken me to sit down and blog about it …

I received an unexpected royalty check from BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc). Anytime I got a BMI check I aways open it thinking “maybe this is the big one”, haha. Well, I have to confess - this wasn’t the “big one” - but it was such a pleasant surprise.

The check itself (actually, there are two checks) was only about $25. But it was royalties derived from radio airplay of the song “You Are The One” that I composed for my wedding! Not only was it that song, it was for radio play in Trinidad and Tobago!

“You Are The One” is a ballad I wrote for my wife, Joy. I wrote it the week of our wedding, Aug 18, 1998 and sang it to her at our rehearsal dinner and wedding reception. About a year later, I snuck into the studio and made a demo of it for her. I uploaded it on the old “mp3.com” and I guess that’s where folks found it and it made it’s way on the airwaves.

Way cool, huh? For those who are interested, I’ve re-uploaded the song … it’s on my IndieHeaven page and you can listen to it if you’d like. While you are there, visit the “Radio Station” page and vote for “Restore My Heart” at the same time!

For the Kingdom,
Fred

Being a Batchelor | Dan Duke’s Journal

Posted on September 22nd, 2006 in General by Fred

Hey Everybody -

WOW! It’s quiet around here. Joy and the kids (yep, all 4 of them) left yesterday for her parents in Gainesville, GA. Joy’s “Uncle Lin” is having another birthday up there (83, I think), there is a worship conference at Free Chapel, and it was just a good time for a family trip. I’m here working, doing “Worship under the Stars” work and rehearsals, leading worship at church, etc. I’m enjoying the peace and quiet but will likely be feeling stir-crazy in a couple of days.

On another note - I got a great email from Dan Duke, “A Call to the Nations”. I’ve known Dan and his ministry for decades - since I was a teenager, and have always respected his ministry. He’s posted a great article called “Servanthood” on his site and I’d like to recommend it for a quick read.

“… People who serve are the lubrication that makes the wells of progress turn in the Kingdom of God …”

Prayer Requests

Posted on September 18th, 2006 in General by Fred

Hey Ya’ll

I don’t often post a punch list of prayer requests, but I’m got a nice list piling up, so I decided I’d get my friends, family, and readers “on board” with some specific things I’m tackling right now.  I’d appreciate your prayers and intercession over these matters!

1.  Worship Under the Stars:  last year this event was beyond incredible.  This year, I desire the same thing - Greatness for God.  I have to admit, though - it’s a lot harder this year.  Some things are sluggish, including the much-needed financial provision, as the event costs a LOT more since we are doing it for 2 nights.  It’s taking a while to get the much-needed website completed, but donations will be accepted there soon.  You can always write a donation as you pray!  (grin)

2:  Sale of ….

* my brother and I have a nice residential lot for sale here in the Sea Palms North Cottages on Saint Simons Island.  Land is moving slowly these days, so we know there is a lot of “supply” on the island and not the “demand” there once was … but we wish for prayer and FAVOR to sell this lot.

* e-business website …. I’ve posted one of my online e-business websites for sale.  I’ve got on interested buyer who has agreed to my asking price, but is having trouble getting funds together.

* legal clearance …. in reference to the “site for sale” above, there are some legal issues involving the site that still need to be cleared up.  Looks like God has rescued me from being mixed up in a big lawsuit, but I’ve yet to see the affidavit I need to finalize things … so waiting on Lawyers, right now!

3:   I know there was more, but don’t even remember now!

The Loss of Two Great Heroes

Posted on September 8th, 2006 in General by Fred

This has been a tragic week for us. We’ve lost two family heroes already.

Of course, the entire world has mourned the death of the infamous Steve Irwin “Crocodile Hunter”. Our kids have loved watching Animal Planet and all the “Crocodile Hunter” episodes for years. It was like losing a brother … strange, in that we’ve never met, but you feel attached to people with that much fame.

Then today, a bit closer to home, we lost a great hero and football legend, Erk Russell of Georgia Southern University, my alma mater. Erk was well known for his work with UGA, and coming and establishing a championship football program at Georgia Southern University. I had the pleasure of meeting him many times in my years in Statesboro, and I’m sure that town will be mourning his passing, which was sudden and unexpected.

May they rest in peace. It’s tough to lose them … but what would life be without a Hero? I’m glad that my greatest Hero, Jesus Christ, died - and rose again forever.
