Tomorrow – Pray for Me

Posted on March 17th, 2007 in Old-General by Fred McKinnon

Hey Everyone -

Tomorrow is a big day for me – Sunday, 3/18 … it’s the first Sunday that I’ll be leading the worship as the new, full-time Worship Director at St. Simons Community Church. We had a great rehearsal this past Wednesday, and the band and vocalists were incredible – they were so welcoming, accomodating, and gracious. I’m excited, and although I feel like I have all the qualifications necessary … I’m pretty nervous too. I’d be lying if I didn’t confess that I sure hope to gain man’s approval tomorrow … I mean … it would be my preference that this congregation reacts to my leadership in a positive way. At the same time, I’ve prayed, prayed, and prayed some more … and asked God to simply help me to engage in authentic worship and lead others to do the same. Ultimately, it’s HIS approval that I’m after. The other is just His favor and “icing on the cake”.

Because it’s my first time, and because my #1 goal is NOT necessarily to do all my “favorite, current songs”, but to do “common ground” elements that will assist the congregation in engaging with us … I’ve selected some songs that I hope can do that effectively:

“Meet with Me
Holy Is the Lord” (Tomlin) – a more upbeat arrangement
“The Solid Rock” (traditional hymn with a cool guitar-based arrangement in E)
Be Unto Your Name” (Robin Mark, from the old “Revival in Belfast” CD … this Sunday will be the last day for the flute player (love ya, Elsa!), and she’s great … so I chose this song because it has a gorgeous flute part, and I wanted to allow her playing to be featured on her last day .. plus, the big 3/4 waltz chorus has always been a long-time favorite for me.
How Great is our God” (Tomlin) .. need I say more?

Finally .. as the pastor is closing out a series on “heaven”, we’ll close with a funk-groove version of the old traditional hymn, “When We All Get to Heaven” … definitely not the way you probably sang it back in the traditional church.

I’ll let you know how things go .. pray for us to have an awesome time in worship and Word, and pray for my voice – it’s not in shape for 3 back-to-back worship services!

For the Kingdom,
Fred

I think you got it, bro…Of course you want to do your best for the Lord. I love the fact that you want to put your “personal” best foot forward. I totally trust the Holy Spirit’s leading but I just have a real problem these days with worship leaders who don’t put personal work into it by planning, practice and definitely prayer over what’s offered or even asking for the Holy Spirit to guide you in the selection. I just think it’s a real sell out to run through a book or some “sheets” and expect the Holy Spirit to do the work. We want to always offer the best of our God-given talents and gifts.

God bless you richly. I believe you must be following the Lord’s direction and He will defintely carry you through and richly bless you. You, along with the Holy Spirit will usher God’s people into His presence with worship and adoration.

I just got this right now. Two services are already over. Guess I’ll just pray for 1/3 of your stuff. But we will be praying. :)
