SSCC Sunday 5/6 Recap

Hey Everyone -
Hope your week is starting off with a bang. Yesterday was a blast as I got to go out and tour the construction site of the new church facility .. it’s gonna be incredible!
This past Sunday, 5/6 was my first Sunday where I “floated” … meaning, instead of leading worship in the main auditorium, I “floated” through the other venues to observe, participate, and lead.
Shannon Lewis (our Associate Worship Director) led the 3 services in the main auditorium. I posted his set list over at The Worship Community, but it included:
“O Taste and See” (Walk in Song) by Brian and Jenn Johnson
“Everlasting God”
“Beautiful One”
“Be Thou My Vision”
“Barren Land” (special music, song done by Shane & Shane, worked great with the theme “Green Acres” about the parable of the sower)
Also, we did a hilarious cut of the “Green Acres” theme. After a great message by the Pastor David on the “thorns” in our life that choke out the seed, there was an appropriate response time and Shannon led a building arrangement of “It is Well With my Soul” that was uplifting. I finally got to experience “Kid Jam”. This occurs during the 9:30 service and is for kids in 1st-5th grades. It’s a high-octane, fun environment that currently meets in “The Wherehouse” venue of our campus. It started with the kids in small groups but they all came together for some great worship. I was just an observer in KidJam but I was blessed big-time. Those kids are excited about Jesus – they were singing, clapping, jumping, dancing. Justin is an incredible leader with them and his passion his so contagious. Deb Kay (our “SEC” – Service and Environment Coordinator) writes some incredible scripts for the plays and the flow of the service, and I must tell ya – it was awesome. They had a hilarious skit about “Endurance”, which was the key teaching. The entire time … I mean, every second of it .. those kids were engaged and participated 100%. I have jokingly been asking where the secret class is in Christian-dom where we teach folks that all the passion, excitement, and response (physical, emotional, etc) that they’ve learned to express is no longer supposed to be exercised once you become an adult and go to “big church”.
“Rush Hour” is the same “high-octane” service for the Middle School 7-8 graders. It occurs during the 11:00 service in “The Wherehouse” venue as well. I was honored to take part in this service, which is led by the Youth Ministry of SSCC. They have their own band – drummer, bass, two guitars, singers – the works. Rush Hour, appropriately named because we cram small groups, worship, teaching, and games into one hour … was a blast. I did a short, 20 minute teaching on “Postures of Worship, Worship in Spirit and Truth” and felt like the kids there were engaged and connecting. Having access to the younger kids is critical in developing a “culture of worship” and I consider it an honor to be trusted with that responsibility. We closed up the teaching and jumped into a short time of praise and worship, where I led with the band:
“Holy Is The Lord”, “How Great is Our God” and “Here I Am To Worship”.
All in all, it was a great morning. Lots of excited people and I was really encouraged to be able to grasp the vision and scope of the hard work and dedicated ministry that is going on across the campus at SSCC.

Well, there’s no doubt about it. Our churches are the same. We have “Fam-Jam”. Endurance was the last attribute we went over. It’s over for the summer, but will start again in Sept.
I will miss it. I enjoy it as much as the main service (if not a little more!)
It’s a great ministry. Sandy and I joined the church Sunday night.

Sounds really exciting! Wish some of the enthusiasm of those kids for worship would rub off on some of the adults here.
One of the things that I love about our Baptist church in Blackshear is that the worship set is almost identical to what you have in a non-denominational/charismatic/pentecostal church. The only difference is that we have a little southern gospel and Brooklyn Tab thrown in, but either way, God is exalted and our hearts are lifted in the process. Isn’t that the purpose of praise in the first place?
One of the things that I loved about my childhood years at Christian Renewal, Brunswick was the children’s ministry. It was the first church we’d been to that actually thought we were worth reaching where we were; Not as mature worshipers yet, although most of us eventually became exactly that, but as children with child-like faith and energy. It’s also the primary reason why we stayed.
I’m glad to hear that you are continuing and expanding this Christ-honoring ministry. I’ve heard excellent things about your church and look forward to hearing even greater things that God is doing in the future. :0)
