Worship Confessional, Sunday 11/18
Posted on November 19th, 2007 in Church Life, Worship Confessionals by Fred McKinnonHey Everyone -
No video today – actually, it’s been a few weeks since I did a “video” worship confessional. They are fun, but even the simple ones take a good bit of time to encode, upload, edit, etc.
This was an interesting weekend because I’ve been a little under the weather. Some kind of nasty cough/cold with bad congestion has been hanging over me for the last few days … that’s not altogether unusual this time of year. I called Larry, one of our singers (and elders) on Saturday and asked if he could come in Sunday and sing melody to cover me. He graciously agreed (he was “off” that Sunday on rotation) and came to my rescue.
So, I led worship from the keyboard, and sang “a little” – enough to help the singers and band know where we were going.
We had a guest speaker, Dr. James Walker from the Haggai Institute – he talked about the Pursuit of Holiness and it was a great message!
Here’s our setlist:
Open:
Made to Worship (Tomlin)
Opening Set:
Everything That Has Breath (Redman)
*No Other Name (Todd Fields)
Second Set:
My Heart Will Trust (Hillsongs)
Give Thanks (Integrity)
Closer:
Make us a House of Prayer
* “No Other Name” was a last-minute substitution. Our main drummer wasn’t able to play, so one of the other drummers played. He did a great job, but the 3/4 groove on “The Solid Rock” arrangement that I’d hoped to do wasn’t happening, so we decided to just pull it and put in a song that was easier to play.
* “Give Thanks” – Kimbo, my primary electric player, heard us messing around with me just playing this on piano with a lot of “extra fluff” … arpeggios, rolls, etc. He really felt that since this was such a traditional song, it may sound really good just keeping it simple. So, I took his suggestion and we led “Give Thanks” with vocals and piano only. I sang a few phrases and focused mostly on playing a more traditional piano background. I enjoyed getting to run up and down the keyboard (until someone made a Liberace joke, so I quit!) – and most of all, one of my all-time favorite things happened – I was able to hear the congregation singing much louder than us!
So, all in all a good day – I just felt lousy. Feeling better today – 2nd night in a row with NyQuil … so, I got some decent rest and I’m in faith that this junk is getting taken care of quickly!
Looking forward to a light week, celebrating Thanksgiving with family, and maybe even hunting a little bit – I can’t decide what I want more … the extra R&R on vacation, or the deer meat (which requires getting up EARLY, thus, no R&R).
How was your weekend?
Fred

Fred,
I hope your voice get ups to par soon. My weekend was both discouraging and life-affirming. God works that way I guess.
I was feeling a little sick too this weekend. I had planned to go to work yesterday, on a Sunday, but I felt kind of sick. I guess God wanted me to be at church. On the other hand, I did get lots of much needed sleep.
