Music from my Niece, Madeline
Posted on November 26th, 2007 in Music by Fred McKinnonHey Ya’ll,
Last month I had a great opportunity. My niece, Madeline Wilbanks, was given “studio time” by her parents for Christmas last year. They finally decided to cash in last month. Madeline is the daughter of Rick and Kathy Wilbanks … Rick is one of Joy’s 3 older brothers. They live up in Cleveland, GA.
I’d heard over the last couple of years that Madeline had taken up an interest in music, teaching herself to play banjo, guitar, mandolin, etc. She was already active in band, and like so many other teens – active in just about everything else. She’s 16 … so being self-taught, and .. oh yeah … 16 … I honestly had no idea what to expect. I understood that the songs she wanted to record were all originals, and that she just wanted to get them down to share with her friends and family.
When Madeline showed up I knew in just about 5 minutes that she was not only prepared, but also that I’d be in for quite a treat. We spent a few hours for the next couple of days while they were in town and got some basic demo tracks to 5 songs. I’ve asked permission to share some of these this week on the blog … I’m quite proud of this girl!
So … here’s my favorite of the five songs … “Have You Forgot”. Yeah, “fogot” isn’t grammatically correct – and she already knew that, but she didn’t care and thinks it just “sounds better” this way .. and I wholeheartedly agree.
My favorite line in this song is “why would you pay so high a price only to know I’d disappoint you” … wow.

You can tell Madeline how awesome she is on Facebook … she doesn’t know I’m blogging this, so why not surprise her with some much-deserved congrats!

Yeah, no kidding .. I hadn’t really talked to Madeline about that, but I should get the contracts ready, haha … plus, I have fwd: it to a few record label execs I know. Who knows!
She’s like a Christian “Colbie Callait”….I’d buy her CD

Very nice song! I love REAL music!! Always get excited when I hear something that is not over-produced (like most moder worship) and that lets the sincerity of the artist shine through like this demo! Great job Fred!! And Kudos to Madeline!!

Funny you should said that! My wife heard a Colbie song on the radio the other day – had never heard of the artist, but googled the lyrics and found out who the artist is … yes, I agree – they are very similar!
Fred
Thanks, Russ … I agree … it’s cool stuff!
Fred
impressed!!!! she should definitely keep writing. i wanna hear more!
Most definitely unique, though I think the song could be strengthened a little in places – I’d change a word here and there, and add a bit of orchestration and a quiet rhythm section (fretless bass, and a stripped down jazz kit recorded with just a stereo pair). Otherwise, her voice is reminicent of Audra Lynn, one of my very favorite IHOP worship leaders. She should definitely keep it up!
Kind of has a Jars of Clay feel to it. I really like alot. I hope her parents give her more studio time because she has what it takes. I love the fresh style and especially the lyrics. One of my favorite things about a new artist is if they write their own stuff. It just means so much more. I, for one, would buy it if she made a cd.
I’d buy it… I kept waiting for the band to kick in and take it to another level… kind of the set up that Shannon described… it’s kind of got an “enter the worship circle” vibe… http://www.entertheworshipcircle.com/ewcblog/index.php
I enjoyed the song a lot! Just as Shannon said a few spots could use a little cleaning up. It is good though and I liked it!
wow, I loved it. I’m 15 and am trying to learn how to play the guitar. This song, and she, really inspired me to keep trying to learn. The song was great, my favorite part in it is the same as yours. That is just amazing.:)
Incredible voice. I love the song. Let me know when the CD is available.
Wow, I love the song and I love the message. I really like the line you mentioned. So deep, especially to have been written by a 16 year old. Wow. As others have said, I would buy that and I would love to perform that in my church. Please send her my compliments.
She’s 16!? I missed that part.
Wow…uber-kudos!

Oh wow. Very nice for a sixteen year old. Actually, pretty much amazing for a sixteen year old.
She kinda sounds like Isa Covourtier to me. She’s was a worship leader at IHOP KC for a while.
This is nice. Very chill.
She has great intonation – unless you loaded on the autotune – which it doesn’t sound like you did! Nice work, both of you.
