From the Word: Isaiah 60:1-2

Posted on December 5th, 2007 in From the Word by Fred McKinnon

“(1) Arise, shine; For your light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon you. (2) For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and deep darkness the people; But the Lord will arise over you, And His glory will be seen upon you.” (Isaiah 60: 1-2, NKJV)

Hey everybody -

So I was reading this morning and was meditating on this Scripture. Of course, the first thing that comes to mind is the old Hosanna! recording with Kent Henry … I believe it was HM003, “All Hail King Jesus”, the first “official” release from Integrity’s Hosanna! Music. For a nice blast from the past, check out this audio clip at WorshipMusic.Com.

So .. anyway, back to the Scripture. I’d agree that darkness is covering the earth … sure, it can get worse, but it has .. and continues to get worse, year after year. Even we Christians are gradually falling more and more into the trap of accepting things that we shouldn’t.

But this Scripture talks about God’s glory being “seen upon us”. The word “glory” here is “chabod” … meaning weightiness, that which is substantial or heavy, glory, honor, splendor, power, wealth, authority, and magnificence, fame, dignity, riches, and excellence … to be reknowned …. this “heaviness” in the OT (chabod) representing honor and substance.

Here’s my pondering thought this morning … what does that look like on us? I suppose you could just repeat the last paragraph, but I mean specifically … practically … what does that (or could that) look like, in an every day way … for me and you?

Hmmm

I’ve always compared it/us to being the moon. By ourselves we are worthless – like coal. Good only for making a big mess and throwing in the fire. But under heat and pressure, the lump of coal is transformed into one of the most beautiful, shiny and glorious gems known to man.

The moon is just rock, too. It just hangs there until the sun reflects its light on it. I believe that when the bible says that His glory will be “seen on you” that it means “reflected”. God has “arisen over us”, and His light is shining upon us. We, like the moon, are to reflect that light in the darkness. The darker the night, the brighter the moon.

Sadly to say, we are having way too many eclipses these days – when the world comes between us and the son.

That’s how I think it looks.

It reminds of what favor is all about. God’s favor upon us is the supernatural charisma of God upon us. When we have this the evidence of God is quite clear. We seem to be in tune with God’s will. Things seem to fall into place. People seem to cooperate with us.

I guess that’s so when we’re having that “all too rare” bluebird day. Jesus was the greatest example of what God’s glory being on someone was supposed to be, and He was killed. He also promised how people would hate us and try to snare us. Yes, I agree that God’s glory upon us is like Peter says, but I believe the world sees it much more when we are in tune with God, shining with joy and happiness and excited about life even when nothing has fallen into place or when no one is cooperating with us.

I choose Peter’s over mine, though. lol
