HELP – Joy to the World, Mariah Carey

Posted on December 11th, 2007 in Music by Fred McKinnon

OK, gang … I ain’t scared to ask for help. I usually pride myself on the ability to pretty much throw chords down on the fly while listening to a tune. Today’s assignment has me pulling my hair out. It’s the introduction to “Joy to the World” from Mariah Carey’s Christmas album – we’ll be doing this Dec 23.

WARNING: THEORY NERD ALERT

There is a serious set of “nelson chords” (a term I dubbed in honor of my high school band teacher, Robert Nelson, who taught us our first “jazz/altered chords” in a little jazz combo after school).

The song is in the Key of A …

Here’s what I know .. it starts on an A with “Joy”… and ends up on the m6 (C#m) with “World” …

It’s the “to the” … those two chords that are blasting me. As usual, when I get stumped on chords, I start running the Circle of 5ths .. knowing they get me home – so I worked backwards on this one … I know they land on C#m (the minor 6, aka m6), so I figured that the 5 chord taking me to the C#m would be the 5 of 6 … correct … it’s some version of a G#. Then, getting to that 5 of 6 .. the G# .. I ran the circle again, and the 5 of G# is D# of some sorts (which in the Key of A, would be the 5 of 7).

It’s hard to clearly hear the bass on the recording – I think the bass is maintaining the root movement .. “Joy (A) to (D#) the (G#) world (C#m), and in the RH is where I’m hearing the tri-tone substitution, working in altered chords, chromatically from the D#, down to D natural, down to C# on the m6.

So, I know it’s a D# (something) and a G# (something) …

Anyone got ears to spell out these alternate chord voicings?

I don’t know what the heck you’re talking about brother. If it’s got a “C” guitar chord, I can play it. But you are talking waaaaay over my head. O Well!

That’s my wife’s job. I just sing and play what she tells me to. If you don’t have the answer by the time she gets home, I’ll get her to take a crack at it. Good luck!

    Thanks, Matthew ..

Hmm .. I think I have it almost figured out … I *DEFINITELY* have the notes down .. now, just figuring out what to call those chords … I’d share here, but I wanna wait and see what anyone else comes up with … I’ll reveal my guess later .. I promise I’ll be truthful, haha! Ultimately, it won’t matter – ’cause me and the bass player are the only ones playing here anyway … and allz Gary (bass) needs to know is A – D# – G# C# …

If those are for sure the bass notes try this –

    A – D#m7b5 – G#7 – C#m7

The only thing I’m not sure about is that the melody note (G#) doesn’t fall in the second chord (D#m7b5) so that might not be totally right.

I just know I like that CD!!! I have it on my iPod! Actually downloaded it from her CD courtesy of a gift certificate from my son, Fred.

I think I got it. A, G#/D#, G#7, C#m. Sound more complicated than that, but the second and third chords are just inversion of each other. I of course think of it as A, Ab/Eb, Ab7, C#m, but that’s just my poor brain. Try it and see if you think I’m right.

Did your Mom just say she had it “on her iPod.” Man my parents need to get with it!
Sorry, I can’t be of any help on this one buddy.

    I’m gonna go with:

    Aadd9 D#m7b5 G#7 C#m7

    Final answer.

Here’s the chord progression for the entire clip:

    A(add9) Eb-7(b5) Ab7(#5) Dbm

    D/E A/E E7 G/A

Nice little reharmonization–I like the sideslipping (yes, that’s the real jazz term) at the beginning.

    Oops, Dbm7, not just Dbm.
