Worship Textfessional, Sunday Jan 15
Posted on January 16th, 2008 in Worship Confessionals by Fred McKinnonHey Everybody -
I had every intention of making a video worship confessional… honest. Somehow, that always seems to fall through the cracks. Although it’s a bit time consuming, it was always fun. I wonder if people really watch them, and if they really matter? Let me know.
So anyway, I’m trying to at least commit to giving a “textfessional” – a report of what songs we did, etc. Whenever possible, I’m including direct links to the songs in iTunes, so if you’re wanting to hear a 30-second sample, or even purchase the song on iTunes, you an do so.
Sunday, January 13 2008 – St. Simons Community Church
Shannon (blog) was the primary worship leader today. He did an incredible job of bringing the people into a time of praise and worship and the song selection was incredible.
Walk In: My Savior Lives (iTunes Link)
*nice cover of this awesome New Life Worship song … my friend Jay Sellers joined us this week on electric guitar and nailed the opening intro. This song is pushing the envelope for some in our congregation – it’s obviously very “electric guitar” driven and has a high, almost non-singable melody for both men and women. The melody hovers around the high D-F of the treble cleff (4th line up, or top line). As a result, you have two choices:
- sing the melody an octave lower … kinda lame ’cause there is NO ENERGY there.
- sing the song where it is, but it requires you to be able to sing half decently, and it absolutely requires you to have to sing loud.
Choice #2 is why I like the song where it is. Some songs are meant to be high declarations of PRAISE. The lyrics of this song are lyrics of life, celebration, and excitement. “I know that my Redeemer lives …”. That’s something to be excited about… so sing it loud, sing it strong, sing it all.
Opening Set:
“For All You’ve Done” (iTunes link)
- Hillsong power song … gotta love it … I introduced this song last year during Easter. Although Shannon was the primary worship leader, I was playing keys in the band, and had a mic so I led this song myself.
“No Other Name” – North Point/Todd Fields (iTunes link)
- another great song our church loves to sing. Big strong intro and then we all scale back during the Verse – I love it because you can hear all the people singing out strong there.
Second Set: (after announcements, etc)
“See His Love” (iTunes link)
- this song is now one of my favorites, period. We were only able to do it in the 8:00 service, as we had two separate bady decications in the 9:30 and 11:00 services, which took the place of this song.
“Revelation Song” (iTunes link)
- first heard this song on a Gateway Worship album with Kari Jobe … a beautiful song with the “Holy Holy Holy is the Lord God Almighty who was, and is, and is to come” line in the lyrics. We had a special treat on this song – it was led by Amanda Moncus (wife of Chris Moncus) … it was like her official “coming out” party. Amanda is a great BGV, but hasn’t yet really taken a lead role yet. Her voice was perfect for this song .. it’s “hers” – she owns it, as far as I’m concerned. Even this morning, as I walked into my NEW OFFICE (yeah!), one of our elders stopped me just to say how incredible he thought that song was, and how good it sounded. Most importantly, the people responded – it was more like “special music” for them – we had them seated, but we did present the lyrics. Nobody could stay seated though by the time we vamped that chorus a few times. Awesome.
Closer: “Center” (iTunes link)
- Another one of my favorites. Simple, acoustic, quiet, reflective. Shannon picked this on acoustic and sang the entire Verse, Pre-Chorus, and Chorus with just acoustic and his vocal … at the end of the Chorus, we built it and the band came in and we played it through … it’s a great song of consecration and devotion.
Hope you had a great Sunday!
For the Kingdom,
Fred
