Worship Textfessional, Sunday Jan 20

Posted on January 22nd, 2008 in Worship Confessionals by Fred McKinnon

Hey Everyone,

A quick recap of this past Sunday. It was a “float” day for me. What’s that mean? Here’s how it works …

Every now and then I schedule a Sunday where I’m not on the stage at all. I take advantage of those Sundays to “float” around and help or evaluate what’s going on in the different areas of ministry that I either oversee or depend on. For example, although I don’t “oversee” the Tech Department, I depend on them greatly and I need to be “up to speed” on what’s happening with those guys. Especially since Travis and Jessica had their first baby girl last week (congrats!), I wanted to be available back in the sound booth if needed. Dana ran sound and he did a fantastic job, so I hung out for the first few minutes of the 8:00 AM service in the sound booth – but then stepped down to the floor so I could just enjoy a morning of worship. Those guys don’t like you up there in the sound/media area singing out … it hinders their ability to hear and make a good mix with my big mouth back there … which makes sense.

For the 9:30 I hung out again and enjoyed the worship led by Harriet, and then floated over to KidJam to see the final skit and lip sync to “The Devil Went Down to Georgia”, masterfully turned into a parody on David and Goliath.

During the 11:00 service I just sat through, enjoying the sermon. It was a nice, relaxed day actually!

The worship was led by Harriet Jones, the original/founding Worship Leader and one of the founding members of the church. She’s been a vital part of the ministry here at SSCC since it began and when I came aboard full time in March of last year, she’s been gracious in allowing me to step in and lead her “baby”, which I appreciate.

The songs they did were:
Walk-in: “Think About the Lord”
Song 1: “Holy is the Lord”
Song 2: “Sing for Joy”
Song 3: “Famous One”
Song 4: “Come with Me” (a special she did with Tim, the guitarist – a Buddy Greene song that was amazing!)
Closer: “You Are My King”

These songs have been “staples” in the church for many years … so it was good to bring back some old, familiar songs. The entire rehearsal last week was less than one hour – easily done when you’ve played the songs for so many years with the same musicians. There is something to be said for bringing back older, more familiar material as opposed to forcing the “latest, greatest” on the congregation week after week.

That’s about it – I’m leading this Sunday and haven’t yet nailed down my setlist, so I hope to spend some time in prayer and worship today just trying to hear direction and feel the flow of this coming Sunday. God knows who is coming, what will be said, who will need to hear it, and what state of mind folks will be in already … so, I plan on tapping into that and asking for His guidance and counsel as I plan for this Sunday.

So how was your Sunday?

For the Kingdom,
Fred
