SSCC - Night of Worship and Dedication

Posted on February 29th, 2008 in General by Fred

Hey Everyone -

Well, it’s last minute - but I just found a breather to say “Come Join Us” for our first official service in the brand new facility of St. Simons Community Church at 2700 Frederica Road. We’re having a Night of Worship and dedication beginning around 6:50 PM.

This is going to be an awesome opening weekend - we’re unveiling a new, state-of-the-art 74,000 ft2 facility, new logos, new artwork and design, new environments, new ministries … everything going to a whole new level!

Tonight’s setlist will include multiple worship leaders, musicians, and special moments with the Pastor, Elders, and other officials.

Walk-In Set:

“I Shall Wear A Crown” - a rockin’ gospel number led by Harriet Jones … I get the privilege of wailing on the grand piano on this tune.
“For All You’ve Done” - led by myself, one of our congregation’s favorites.

Welcome - Prayer, some official stuff, etc.

Opening Set:

“Doxology” - acapella chorus of The Doxology, led by Shannon, which will seque into …
“Again, I Say Rejoice” - led by myself and band, an unbelievably fun song to learn and play, by Israel Houghton
“How Marvelous” (I Stand Amazed), led by Harriet

Reading of Revelation 22:12-end: we’ve been having the Bible read out loud from 9-5 for the last two weeks. Tonight we’ll conclude the last few verses corporately .. should be an awesome moment.

Second Set: (led by Shannon)
“Marvelous Light”
“Sweetly Broken”

Prayer Time, Bible “Capsule”
(a time of prayer and reflecting on the “time capsule” buried underneath the foundation, including a Bible, lots of names of people who need to come to salvation, etc. We’ve GPS’d it and have a lighting cue to shine on it when we talk about it. Incidentally, one of the ladies whose name is in that capsule came to know Jesus as her Lord and Savior … TODAY around NOON!

Third Set: (I get to move from keyboard to grand piano here!)
“Agnus Dei” - Fred
“Holy, Holy, Holy” (Fred)
“Center” - led by Elizabeth

Communion Set:
“You Are My King” (Harriet)
“Here I Am To Worship” (Harriet)
“How He Loves You” (Fred)

Closer:
“How Great is our God” (Fred)

Walk out Jam:
“Again, I Say Rejoice” (Fred)

I’m exhausted, but excited at the same time. Also, I’m taking a leap of faith and ditching the music stand - so will lead tonight with no chords, no music, and no words!

Just for those who are curious about instrumenation, we have:
WL, Keys: Fred McKinnon
WL, A Gtr: Harriet Jones
WL, A Gtr: Shannon Lewis
Drums: Rick Joyce
E. Gtr: Kimbo McMinn
A. Gtr/Leads: Tim Haynes
Bass: Gary Share
Aux Keys/Vocals/WL: Elizabeth Veal
BGV: Larry Wade, Luanne Fendig, Todd Hendrix

and a whole pile of folks running sound, lighting, loops, lyrics, and video!

To God be the glory!

Shure Sets the Wireless Record Straight

Posted on February 28th, 2008 in Technology by Fred

Hey Everyone -

This is a bit “tech” for a lot of my readers … but it’s very important news to anyone involved in technology or ministry that uses “wireless” technology, such as our microphones, etc. Thanks to Curt Taipale @ ChurchSoundCheck.Com for forwarding this along:

Shure Sets The Wireless Record Straight
White Spaces, 700 MHz Auctions, Other Frequency Bands

NILES, IL, February 26, 2008 - Shure has a strong message for our wireless microphone customers. “The sky is not falling,” says Michael Pettersen, Director of Applications Engineering, whose department talks to hundreds of wireless microphone users every week. “Most people have heard only half of the story, and that half is often wrong.”

While the UHF television band may become more crowded, it is not going away by any means. “Reports of the death of the UHF TV band have been greatly exaggerated,” says Mark Brunner, Senior Director, Public and Industry Relations. “The UHF TV band has been, and will continue to be, the largest and best spectrum for wireless microphone users.”

The FCC is in the middle of a multi-faceted reorganization of the UHF television band, stimulated by the future transition from analog to digital television broadcasting. The DTV stations will occupy a smaller section of the UHF spectrum (470 - 698 MHz) than is currently allocated for television broadcasting. The remaining spectrum (698 - 806 MHz) has been divided up into blocks. Some blocks have been or will be auctioned to companies that will use them to provide new nationwide wireless services, while others have been reserved for Public Safety communications.

Even with packing the digital TV stations into a smaller piece of spectrum, there will still be unoccupied channels in every market. These “White Spaces” are used by wireless microphones, in-ear monitors, and production intercoms. The FCC is considering the use of the “White Spaces” to deliver wireless broadband Internet service to consumer wireless devices.

The scale and complexity of this project has generated confusion among wireless microphone users, resellers, and even some manufacturers. Shure explains three points of misunderstanding: the difference between the “White Spaces” and the auctioned spectrum blocks, the fate of wireless microphones after the DTV transition, and the viability of other frequency bands for wireless microphone use.

No Auction For White Spaces
“The ‘White Spaces’ are not being auctioned,” Brunner says. The auctions cover the spectrum from 698 MHz to 806 MHz, often referred to as ‘the 700 Megahertz band.’ “The ‘White Spaces’ will not be sold to Google, Microsoft, or anyone else,” he says.

The Morning After
And what happens on “the morning after” the DTV transition? “Wireless microphones will not stop working on February 18, 2009,” says Edgar Reihl, Shure’s Technology Director, Advanced Development. “Any consumer device that the FCC allows to operate in the “White Spaces” must include circuitry and software that allows it to detect and avoid both TV broadcasts and wireless microphone signals.” The FCC is currently testing this avoidance technology, and it is unlikely to authorize new devices unless they can adhere to these rigid rules and their performance is verified under real world conditions.

Wishful Thinking
Some have engaged in wishful thinking that moving wireless microphones to other frequency bands can eliminate the risk of interference. “The 902 - 928 Megahertz and 2.4 Gigahertz ranges have been represented as some sort of ’spectrum lifeboats’, but those ‘boats’ have holes in them,” states Reihl. “The core UHF TV bands have much more usable spectrum available than the 902 MHz and 2.4 GHz bands, even after taking into account any new unlicensed devices that may exist in the years after 2009. More usable spectrum translates into more wireless microphone channels available to the user. Additionally, providing interference-free, high quality audio is even more challenging in these bands, where wireless microphones compete with other signals such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.”

Adjusting Product Offerings
“When the timetable for the auctions became clear, we responded by transitioning our wireless products to new frequency ranges that are below the auctioned and Public Safety blocks,” says Brunner. “Our premium UHF-R product was designed with the post-DTV RF landscape in mind. Its 60 megahertz tuning bandwidth is among the widest in the industry, offering maximum flexibility to large-scale wireless users.”

Working Closely With FCC
Shure has been actively engaged with the FCC’s Office of Engineering and Technology and with legislators in Congress since 2003. The Company has provided samples of its wireless products for use in FCC testing, submitted plans for field testing of interference effects, and has arranged meetings between FCC officials and representatives from broadcast networks, sports leagues, and other major wireless microphone user groups. “No one can definitively say how this will turn out,” Brunner says. “The FCC has to iron out a lot of details before it makes any decisions related to new use of the ‘White Spaces’.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

So, let’s see …

Posted on February 27th, 2008 in Church Life, Faith, Family, General, Life and Family by Fred

Hey Everyone,

So, let’s see … it’s 10:00 AM EST … I just settled down in my office at SSCC, starting on my 2nd cup of hash. (that is a word for coffee, isn’t it?). I feel like I’m already 3 hours behind today. We’re only a few days away from our “launch” at the new facility. Folks, if only you were close by - I wish you could see this place. It’s amazing. Gorgeous. Technology-Design cool. I love this place - I think I could live here. Actually, I have lived here the past couple of weeks.

I just need to ramble a moment - get some stuff out of my mind and onto this blog so I can move forward … so, if you’re interested, here are some random, crazy thoughts …

  1. Still no callback from Nemour’s Children’s Hospital re: Andrew’s MRI results. Joy and I are both 100% positive that this “mass” has either gotten smaller, moved, or both. Moved is definite - I’m 100% positive this mass isn’t in the same place it was when we discovered it a couple of weeks ago. To confirm my suspicions, I asked Joy “do you think it’s moved”? She said “yes” … I asked “where do you think it was, and where do you think it is now”? … she answered EXACTLY what I was thinking. Maybe this is some hernia or something.
  2. 2nd rehearsal last night this week - the rehearsals are long and arduous. Kudos to Travis (our Tech Director) for keeping his cool while 12+ people on stage are all demanding tweaks to their IEM (In Ear Monitor) mixes. At some point, I think we’ve gotta lighten up - and quit asking for detailed, special mix adjustments on every single song. This is where the Avioms would’ve been nice.
  3. I’m pumped about our opening this weekend - it’s going to be amazing. I’ll post the setlist shortly.
  4. Jon Michael and Will both have their first soccer games of the Spring season this weekend. I’m supposed to be working @ the church and hate to miss their first game. It will be Will’s first game ever.
  5. The Earthworks PianoMic system arrived about 30 minutes ago via Fedex.
  6. So, for the last 10 minutes or so, I’m on phone w/ Travis talking about all the IEM mixes. I’m taking a band that has never really used IEM that much, who are used to playing on a stage the size of a postage stamp, with 4 floor wedges blaring in front of them … and asking them to go IEM. It’s a HUGE ADJUSTMENT … somewhat painful, but will be for the better.
  7. Another rehearsal tonight - we’re going to try and run down the entire setlist for Friday night from start to end without a lot of stops and monitor adjustments. Today I need to install the piano mic, test it out, try and figure out why our Alesis HD24’s are syncing as they should, and do some administrative stuff - reconcile my church credit card and find all my receipts, submit some reimbursements, schedule the next few Sundays, and check on how our database entry for the C3 Choir is coming along … sounds like enough to warrant another 12+ hour day.

Well, I’ve vented some frustrations in Jim’s office next door, talked on the phone w/ Travis for 15 minutes, typed this blog, and I’m starting hash #3 … time to get to work.

So, how are things going in YOUR NECK OF THE WOODS?

For the Kingdom,
Fred

Andrew’s MRI Results

Posted on February 25th, 2008 in Family, Life and Family by Fred

Hey Everyone -

I had a blog written last night, set to “publish” around noon today asking for prayer as we drove to Jacksonville to meet with the surgeons to find out what’s going on with Andrew.

Just got a phone call from the hospital - seems Dr. Dokler got called into emergency surgery so they canceled our appointment and will call us back later today or tomorrow to reschedule.

At first, I was frustrated - you know, we’re just ready to go down there and find out what the MRI showed - get the results, and plan of action. Then, I took a moment and thought “well, at least my kid isn’t the one in emergency surgery”.

We always have SOMETHING to be thankful for, right?

Blogging Marathons

Posted on February 24th, 2008 in General by Fred

Hey Gang,

So … I know I’ve been busy. I know I’ve not posted enough “good content” blogs. I know this blog has been more about my son, Andrew, and a few other items lately, instead of worship leading stuff. I know.

Furthermore, I know I haven’t been reading as many blogs or keeping up. Google Reader says I have 410+ unread blogs. And that’s only half as many as WorshipCity.

Alas, once again I’ll declare RSS Bankruptcy. I haven’t even been able to read my own brother’s blog. That’s not good. (Sorry Rob).

So, as I declare bankruptcy once again, I thought I’d give a recap of the Top 10 Blog Marathon Runners - those dudes (or dudettes) who seem to have plenty of time to crank out more blogs than I can keep up with.

Note - if you are on this list - it’s not because I read everyone else’s but not yours .. it’s just that you win the hero cookie for blogging the most. Or maybe I read from my phone and didn’t clear it in Google Reader.

  1. Tony Morgan (38 unread posts) - always good stuff, hate to mark’em read .. but gotta clear it out/
  2. ProBlogger Tips (35 unread posts)
  3. WorshipCity (28 unread posts)
  4. Consuming Worship (27 unread posts)
  5. Chris from Canada (23 unread posts)
  6. BigTelicious Speaks (20 unread posts)
  7. The Wonderful Noise (19 unread posts)
  8. For the Journey (19 unread posts)
  9. Swerve - LifeChurch.tv (16 unread posts)
  10. Ragamuffin Soul (16 unread posts)

Man, I know I’ve hit these sites within the last week - so that’s like as many as 5+ blogs PER DAY for some of these guys!?

So confession time … who’s clogging up your RSS Reader?
