On Leadership: 3 Nuggets, Pt. 2
Posted on March 9th, 2008 in Church Life, Faith, Worship Leadership by Fred McKinnonHey Everyone,
This is Part 2 of this series – see Part 1 for the story behind this series and the first nugget.
Now, let’s discuss Nugget #2 – “vision casting”
2. Vision casting.
A good leader won’t just cast a vision and move on. Vision casting is something that must be done over and over. Don’t assume that because you met with your team and cast a vision 6 months ago over pizza that you don’t need to come back and cast the net again. Always … ALWAYS … look for an opportunity to cast the vision, and to associate things that are going on with the vision.
About 2 months prior to moving into our new facility, I scheduled a lunch with the core members of our praise band’s rhythm section. Knowing we had some monumental changes for them (including the addition of more personnel, rotating schedules, and all-IEM [in-ear monitors]), they would be at the heart of change. It would be a tough transition, and I knew for them to come along they’d need to hear the vision. I also wanted to share some vision about mentoring with them. Although only 2 of the guys could make it, we took them out to the King and Prince Resort and bought them the Sunday Brunch buffet and had a great time.
That was two months ago … it’s time to continually share the vision – remind them of the vision. People forget easily – WE, as leaders, can forget easily – especially when our own agendas start creeping in. This is natural, so don’t get all “holy” thinking you don’t have to keep your own agenda and way of thinking under guard, ok?
People will follow leadership when they are communicating a clear vision. Those who are in agreement with that vision will be ready to sacrifice and serve for it. Those who don’t agree with the vision will ultimately go elsewhere and get involved with a vision that suits them.
Stay tuned for Part 3 … but in the meantime, let’s discuss.
When was the last time you were intentional about vision casting and communication with those you are leading? Comment below.
For the Kingdom,
Fred

I would agree with that. As our pastor is stepping down from leading we need to regroup and talk about the vision. The vision of the church and the worship team. I plan on doing a trip with the team.
Yes, whenever momentum/attendance drops I can ALWAYS track it to a lack of casting vision and purpose. I have found even doing a study of the content of a new song and tying it to a theological perspective on our or purpose tends to ignite their leadership of the song that weekend. Sure there are times we need to do a fellowship to lift moral, but if worship leaders think that will overcome a lack of vision they are nuts.
Here are ways we’ve tried to cast our vision that we exist to bridge others into God’s presence.
1. theologically….tie in thru a bible study in rehearsal, mp3′s we email out, etc.
2. metaphorically…through using word picture and visual pictures (we have a huge banner size print of a bridge in our green room)
3. testimonial– from both people on the team and from congregational members who gave us positive feedback that they met God.
