Ch-Ch-Changes

Posted on April 17th, 2008 in Church Life by Fred McKinnon

Hey Everyone,

Well, I’m back from a day of blog/twitter hiatus … a more detailed blog forthcoming, but I’ve been taking Wednesdays “off” from the blog/twitter world …

Wanted to share some changes here at SSCC - the last few months have been constant states of change. Moving into our new facility has been awesome, but has presented it’s share of challenges as we adjust the schedule. One of the things I love is how our leadership is not ashamed to say “this isn’t working, let’s try something else”.

So, we’ve changed our service times maybe 3 times in the last couple of months. Hopefully, this will be the last one. Starting this Sunday, we’ve modified our service times to be:

9:00 AM – Main Auditorium and Tiny Town (birth through 5 yrs old)
11:00 AM – Main Auditorium, Tiny Town, Kid Jam (6+ elementary age), Rush Hour (middle school)
*Kid Jam meeting in the ClubHouse Theater and small group rooms, Rush Hour meeting in the RoofTop and small group rooms.

Our “FamJam” service – where kids bring their parents to church … which was every week, has now been moved to only the 1st Sunday of each month – at 10:20.

This was a tough move – FamJam was awesome, but the sheer number of volunteers needed, and the extra work to produce it left “KidJam” a bit lacking in quality and personnel. Oddly enough, more kids make it to KidJam than FamJam, so it’s the bigger of the two services for kids, yet was suffering in quality and content.

The move was also targeted to try and help families with preschool children move to our 9:00 AM service. In our 8:30 service, we were averaging 20 kids in “Tiny Town”; however at 11:00 AM, we had 120+ children in TinyTown. Our parents spoke out and told us that 8:30 was not an optimal time to get the preschool kids to church, but that they could handle 9:00.

So, we’ll see how it goes. Now, if most parents with pre-school kids (but not middle school or elementary age) can come to the 9:00 AM, along with those who don’t have kids, or have older kids … we will free up space in our 11:00 AM service.

Pray for us as we navigate these changes. In the meantime, I’ve yet to post a single video and very few pictures of our new facility – which is dumb, because this place ROCKS. I took a few snapshots a couple of weeks ago with my cell phone – so keep in mind, the quality is not good – but you can get an idea of what’s going on!

Enjoy:

Wow! Those kinds of changes are good to make though! Awesome snapshots!

Blessings in finding that rhythm at SSCC.

Wow, is it just me or is rush hours set up that much cooler than the main auditorium?

    Russ- thanks.
Robert – the RoofTop is *MUCH* cooler … it’s geared for Middle School/HighSchool, albeit, I’d love our main auditorium to be “cool” like that … but it’s designed to be a more “comfortable” atmosphere for our adult demographic – many who would LOVE the RoofTop look, but many who are from the more “Sea Island/St. Simons Island”, “nice”, “fancy” culture … but that’s just my $.02.

I know about changes. We are now doing famjam on the first and fourth sunday instead of every one. Same reason. But we’ve always got to strive to do what we have to do to make things work. That’s the beauty about working with a great team – getting ideas working and working the plan until we find the right one.

Keep it up and give us your club house!

I’ll add another “wow,” both for the new facilities and the various things going on. I think it’s great that you’re committing to make things work, even if it means experimenting with schedules for awhile.

    Bobby -
Thanks, man … I appreciate it.
Keith, hey bro – thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. That means *A-LOT* … posted my “I’m Still Alive” post in TheNetwork a couple of days ago – it’s been good to come out of the cave and get back over to IH for a while!
