One of my absolute favorite verses from one of the first books that captured my attention as a non-believer. During the Old Covenant the Spirit would come on individuals, but was rarely WITH an individual, and didn’t seem to ever ‘fill’ them, and least not in the sense that the Holy Spirit took up residence there. I suspect that is because of our sin problem, and that there was no absolute atonement in effect, so we were, in all reality, still ‘sinners’ – not blood bought believers. At least something like that, but I think what’s significant here is God is pointing out that a change is coming (which has now come): the Holy Spirit is now available to all, and in every believer, changing their hearts, & empowering them via God’s immediate presence. Good stuff!

Only through the powerful indwelling of the Holy Spirit can we be changed from the disgusting creatures that we once were into people that truly follow God. Not in the Brian McLaren sense, but EVERYTHING MUST CHANGE!
