Effective Leading

Posted on June 18th, 2008 in General Leadership, On Leadership, Worship Leadership by Fred McKinnon

Hello Everyone,

We had a great staff meeting at SSCC yesterday and Pastor David (link to his outdated, inactive blog!) shared some of his thoughts regarding effective leadership.

It was good stuff, and I’d like to share my notes, but before I do .. I thought I’d give us a day for discussion.

David mentioned two important words for us to discuss, and what they mean:

1.  Communication
2.  Leadership

As it relates to your field of ministry, work, and relationships, what are your thoughts on each of these two traits?

Start the discussion.
Fred

  1. Pretty broad question. Hmmm… I’ve seen communication alone cost my company hundreds of thousands of dollars, I’ve seen people lose their jobs over it, I’ve seen people get hurt and leave a church over it. It doesn’t matter what wisdom and knowledge you have until you are able to communicate it to others. People communicate best in different ways – written, spoken, with body language – and getting a staff to clearly communicate can be tough. It’s about using appropriate communication at the appropriate time.

Leadership – is something you do, not a title your given. Leaders are usually hard to organize and administrate on a church staff, but they’re going to lead you to success ultimately, because they want to have an impact on people.

  2. Communication: must be both professional and personal to be effective.
Leadership: by example and by instruction.

Short & sweet! (quite unlike myself, I know!)

  3. I think communication may be the single most important thing to prevent turning little things into BIG things. Poor communication, or none at all can cause people’s minds to think the worst, and cause a situation to go sour real quick. I’ve unfortunately experienced this more in ministry than anywhere else in my life. Entire ministries have been ruined due to lack of communication.

Leadership I believe is strongly connected to being a servant. Serve your people first and it creates a community of respect where they can follow you without hesitation, not to mention it’s a great example of how they should lead others.

From the standpoint of a worship band…

Communication is needed so that everyone understands the vision and direction of the ministry. As changes are rolled out, you have to communicate the why and how.

Leadership is essential so that you can make changes and hold people accountable.

Communication = most people are terrorized and live in fear of clarifying things with other people before they get infected. “Pull the thistle, man.” I am amazed at how many people on a forum say, “Man I wish I could tell so in so X or Y.” I am screaming at the post, “Tell them, tell them.”

    80% of leadership is knowing
    1. what to do next
    2. when to do it
    3. how many resources (People/$) to bring to bear upon 1 and 2.
