IT’s FRI———DAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYY!
(that would be, “It’s Friday”).

Welcome to FreePlay Friday, where I open it up and talk about most whatever I want on this blog, and encourage YOU to do the same thing. OK, well, within some boundaries. Typically, I’m trying (keyword=trying) to keep the blog on-topic the rest of the week, focusing on worship, worship leading, music, leadership, and faith.

Speaking of “FreePlay Friday” – I need some kind of super-cool graphic for this. Anybody out there feeling charitable? I am a graphic nobody .. I can’t draw a recognizable stick-person. I’m envious of you peeps out there (like Russ, Chris, Joel, Alex, Rich, Mandy for instance) who can conjure up cool graphics and banners for your series. So if anybody wants to be GREAT in the Kingdom (something about being a servant, right?) … sport me a graphic, and I’ll tout your praises to all my readers. (oooh, wow).

OK – let’s jump in. Here’s my FreePlay Friday thoughts and recollections from this week:

1. We were watching 101 Dalmations a couple of nights ago … and Jon Michael, my 7-yr old (almost 8-yrs old) year is amazed at the cruelty and pure meanness of Cruella Deville. In his mastered use of the English language and deep reasoning at 7 years old, he thinks he’s figured out why she’s so crabby and mean. He says “I think she doesn’t know the difference between POOP and APPLESAUCE”, so when she thinks she’s eating her APPLESAUCE, she’s probably really eating POOP, and that’s why she’s so mean.”

Yep. That one came out of nowhere.

2. So Joy was driving the kids home yesterday … Jon Michael (above) and Will (6) were in the backseat of our van. As they passed the cemetery off Hwy 341 in Brunswick, Jon Michael declares “that’s where all the dead people are”. Well, there are two parts to that cemetery separated by a street, and as they crossed over and could see the second part of the cemetery, Jon Michael says “wow, there are A LOT of dead people”.

So Will … (if you know Will, this is CLASSIC WILL) says in his bold little 6-year old voice, somewhat exasperated with Jon Michael’s fascination … “JON MICHAEL, OF COURSE THERE ARE LOTS OF DEAD PEOPLE”. A brief pause … and Will begins to qualify this statement with a list, beginning with … “the CAVEMEN …. ” HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

3. I brought home some leftover subs from rehearsal last night. I stacked them on a plate and attempted to cover them with generic brand Saran Wrap. As usual, it didn’t work, it didn’t stick. I wanted to cuss. Right Tam?

4. I’m listening to Martha Munizzi (web | iTunes) … listen, has ANYONE told his gal that she’s WHITE? To all my white (Caucasian), honky friends (can I say that?) … do yourself a listen to Martha. She is amazing. She rocks. If all you play is pulsing bass note, 1-minor 6, 4-5 songs over and over, a few different ways (ie. Hilllsongs, Passion) with dueling, u2 electric guitars … BREAK OUT OF YOUR FREAKIN’ BOX. Talk about “gimme some groove”.

5. I’m leaving next week to attend the National Worship Leader Conference in Austin, TX. Will be attending and teaching “Worship + Web2.0″ class. Russ Hutto is flying out and rooming with me … he’s my travel buddy and Chaperone. (uh oh)

6. I called AT&T this morning and canceled the RingMaster # that I’ve used as my fax number at the home office. THE FAX SPAMMERS WIN. I CANCELED THE NUMBER AND UNPLUGGED THE FAX. I HATE SPAM.

Ok, so now it’s time for you to have some fun. Feel free to comment on anything that I mentioned today that you “relate to” … but, also … please comment and just leave some RANDOM ANYTHING to make us smile, pray, or connect to you!

Go for it.

  1. I’m sure free-for-all Friday’s are supposed to be light-hearted, but…

    1. My whole team from work got laid-off on Monday
    2. I’m working on a new contract leading a new team in an industry I know nothing about (I don’t even think I’m faking it well, anymore)
    3. I’ve been praying for maturity, and He’s answering my prayer – and it’s hurting (this actually has nothing to do with the layoff)
    4. I’ve realized this week just how task-driven instead of people-driven I get, and how it hurts folks (a lot of the maturity issues)

It’s actually been a pretty rough week, and I’m so glad it’s Friday and almost over.

  2. Today is Friday! Our worship team was invited to be the host music/band for a town wide “National Night Out” on August 5th. What a blessing! It will be a blast praying and planning for what to do that eve.

I’m praising God for healing my dog of a terrible case of kennel cough. Almost lost him, but for God! Thank You Thank You! My little JoJo .

Im taking an awesome course this summer! We are just finishing up week three of five. The Institute of Contemporary and Emerging Worship Studies, being taught by Dan Wilt. WOW! (http://www.theworshipleader.com/)
I’ve never thought as many thoughts as I have over the past three weeks.

My best time with my new iPod is with the instrumental Worship Interludes music threads on Fred’s blog and also the Highest Praise Worship blogs. Now that’s what an iPod is for! It gives me an opportunity to pack a little bit of Heaven in my pocket, and listen in any time I need a touch of “home” to carry me through the day.
    THank you, Fred!

Well my Friday has been great thus far. Just went in and worked for about 3 hours this morning so I could get some required things done before the weekend got here. I plan on just kicking up my feet and relaxing today. Might even just grab a few movies to watch with some good ol’ Dr. Pepper and be completely lazzzzaayy. Hope ya have a great Friday!

  4. Fred says:

    Matthew,
Yikes – we will pray for you. FreePlayFriday can be anything, so I’m glad you were real and transparent.

Jamie – I didn’t know people REALLY listened to those old podcasts. Sorry I don’t really do them anymore, maybe I should. I’m glad you’re recycling them, though.

    Pastuh -
Sounds like an awesome day for you!

For me … I wrote this post a couple of hours ago and published it with a feel-good smile on my face. Since then, a big cloud of frustration, anger, confusion, and some other nasty emotions have come over me. Well, for one .. my internet @ the house is down, which pretty much screws up the rest of my Friday unless it gets fixed. For two, for some things I can’t really divulge … today was the “last chance” for some things I was really excited about to come through, and they didn’t work out … leaving me frustrated, confused, fighting anger, bitterness … having arguments and vain speculations in my mind. I know that’s not a good place to be, and I’m working on getting it out of me (typing it and confessing it are part of that process) … so pray for me.

    Fred

“It’s Friday!” – Yes, and EVERY day is Friday for me. For any of you that know out there how it feels- When I was lying on that cold steel table in Jax. fixin to get my heart worked onin ST. Vincent’s, after I filled out a paper that says “You may not make it back”- I realize now that EVERY DAY is FRIDAY!!- Thanks Be to God for Doctors, Research and Technology!! – Happy Friday EveryDay!!! RV

  7. Fred says:

    RV
Wow … I had no idea. What a perspective … amazing!
    Fred

    Everyone else:
That cloud of darkness … it’s gone. Just had a great conversation and I’m smilin’ again. My plans .. well, they may or may NOT come together … but at least I got some communication on the matter, which is all I needed. Praise God, He is so good.

  8. Sis says:

Sounds like it’s been a crazy week for a LOT of us! I think I’ve experienced all the highs and lows a week can hold. Wasn’t supposed to be at work today (taking the day off for a family reunion – gonna miss you and your family, bro). But I’m typing this in my office because some things with a deadline of yesterday got screwed up. Anyhow, I’ve fixed it all and am going to head home soon.

As for my two nephews, well all I’ve got to say is that they have kept me laughing and kept me convicted ever since they were old enough to talk! It’s amazing what comes out of a kid’s mouth.

Finally, responding to RV’s post, we often lose perspective don’t we? Even some of the “big stuff” that we’re sweating pales in comparison to those kind of life and death issues. At church Wednesday night I realized that when we say that God is all-knowing that it means that He knows I’m going to fall even before I fall. And He is faithfully there, laying the groundwork for not just the fall, but for the recovery as well. If we can only focus on the aspect that He’s already at the recovery, it would make the fall seem not so bad, huh?

  9. Fred says:

    Chris,
Thanks … I laughed OUT LOUD. (is there a roach on the bottom of your shoe?)

  10. Mike says:

Man, first time someone played “Glorious” for me, a blond white girl never entered my mind!! But if you listen to her new song, she sounds like a Joisey Goil! Talk about range…

My six-year-old daughter played soccer for the first time this year. When I suggested she move around a bit on the field, she told me pointedly she was “defense.” When I told her to go help the other “Defense” player, she put her hands on her hips and said “Dad… have you ever even played soccer?” I’m in trouble.

So Fred, after picking myself up off the floor from laughing about the Cruella Deville thing and the cavemen at the graveyard thing, a thought occurred to me.

If you are as graphically challenged as I am when it comes to logo design, you might check out some of the free graphic generators online like cooltext.

I do have one you could take a look at if you’d like. Where do I send it?

j2nice78 – cooltext – I wll have to check that out for sure.
    Renee’ … thanks … “I think”?
