Posted on August 5th, 2008 in Church Life, Faith, Worship Leadership by Fred McKinnon(from Fred: still on vacation, and honored to have Pete Wilson, Pastor of Cross Point Church in Nashville, TN bring today’s guest blog. Pete and his team are doing an incredible work up in one of my favorite cities in the world. I’ve enjoyed following Pete via his blog (www.withoutwax.tv) and twitters. Comment and let him know how much you appreciate it, and of course, visit his church site and blog)

Thanks Fred for this opportunity to do a guest spot on your blog. I really appreciate and enjoy the heart behind what you’re doing here.
This summer at my church, Cross Point, we’ve been in a series entitled SYNC. We’ve spent the summer asking what are the methods, or disciplines, or rhythms that we need to arrange our life around if we want Jesus to be formed in our life.
Just a few weeks ago we talked about the method or discipline of worship. The message was pre-taped and shown via video, so I thought I would share a part of it with you:

Here’s a few questions to think about. I would love for you to jump in and leave a comment after reading through them.
-Do you have a problem with a focus on “self”?
-Is there a particular environment where you feel you worship best?
-Is your heart expanding in love toward God and others?

Hi Pete! Glad to see you here on Fred’s blog too! I have found that perhaps some things and settings speak to my personality more or just how I am wired – for example, I feel God’s presence very vividly outdoors. I can be on the beach and almost can’t help from singing and worshiping. I was riding down the Na Pali Coast on Kauai and found myself spontaneously – and almost could not restrain myself – singing “How Great Thou Art”. In a church setting I am most comfortable in more relaxed settings using contemporary songs, which I just find more personal. BUT, I’ve recently been in a retreat community where the worship has been more liturgical in nature and I’ve found that to be very peaceful. I guess the only place I feel uncomfortable is where I don’t feel freedom to be myself. I’m not sure if that’s bad or not. I’m not very self concious though so this doesn’t happen often.
Particular environment…I think for me it is outside at night under the stars. This could be with a band during a church service or it could just be me all by myself no instruments or anything. Being in creation brings me right into a place of worship, nothing needs to be said or done to bring me into His presence.

Pete,
Cool to see you on Fred’s blog. I really enjoyed the videography – you have a good team.
-Is there a particular environment where you feel you worship best?
Yes – together with other Christians.

Hey Pete – really good stuff, man. My favorite worship environment would have to be my car!

Thanks everyone!
@Jett t. The car is probably my favorite place to worship. I get some weird looks from time to time but I love it!

The car, the shower…
God has really been moving me to a place recently where I am spending most of my time in intercessory prayer during worship on Sunday.
I feel such a burden to pray for our body. I feel like there is such a struggle with worship being all about “our experience” vs. all about God. We have to be able to move past this-or we will begin to stagnate.
Pete, thank you for sharing today.
