FreePlay Friday – Weather Man Feed Monkey
Posted on August 22nd, 2008 in Free Play Fridays by Fred McKinnon
(today’s FreePlay Friday graphic was generated by ME … haha, thanks to “cooltext.com” … no FreePlay Friday graphics were submitted this week – if you’d like to make a graphic and have your blog pitched right here, just email me a “FreePlay Friday” graphic! )
Hey Everyone, it’s “FreePlay Friday” (view all “FreePlay Friday” Posts) … the day where I post whatever I want, on whatever topic(s) I want, with no regard to whether or not it does (or doesn’t) apply to the main theme of this blog, which is worship, worship leadership, church life, and music. What makes “FreePlay Friday” so much fun is that I want YOU to participate by either commenting on my topics or by entering your own, totally random “FreePlay Friday” thoughts in the comments section of the blog. So all you hundreds of RSS Readers need to just click on over now and finish the post on the site so you can participate. (please?)
First things first … I’ve not been able to upload my video or work online because of severe internet issues today, so this may not come out until Saturday. I assumed it was the storm, but I’m now connecting from my neighbor’s porch .. .his Comcast connection is just fine. Go figure.
Two things to discuss today:
#1. FEED MONKEY
As in RSS Feeds. If you’re into blogging at all (even if you read a handful of blogs) you should know about RSS. I won’t bore you … but it’s the best way (in my opinion) to keep up with multiple blogs and news feeds. A few weeks ago I mentioned Billy Chia, a worship leader in Huntsville, AL who set a goal to have 100 readers on his blog by the end of the year. Shortly after publishing that, I was contacted by Alex @ BetterThanBlank.Org who asked for a shoutout about his goal – 200 readers. I could identify with that one, as my “RSS Readers” count keeps fluctuating in the high 190′s, and is often at “199″. So, here’s a shout-out for Alex. If you want to learn more about RSS I’d suggest signing up for the free Google Reader, and make it your start page. (and here’s a cool video on using Google Reader) Then, subscribe to the RSS feed here, over at TheWorshipCommunity.Com, and your other favorite places to visit.
#2. TROPICAL STORM FAY
We’ve been in the thick of it since last night. Kids are out of school, trees are down, the wind is blowing, and we get varying blasts of rain. Truth is, I’m a storm chaser … not really, I mean, I’ve never chased tornados, but I think if I saw one I’d be tempted to chase it.
I took some video today down at the beach … not nearly as dramatic as our friends at the Weather Channel. (I once saw this girl flailing around in the wind, stumbling around on the WC, but she didn’t realize that the elderly couple standing at ease behind her gave away her drama. C’mon, you all know good and well which weatherette I’m talking about, she’s the real drama queen!)
Anyway – enjoy the video. It got worse throughout the day – this was about 3 hours prior to high tide. I didn’t realize that you wouldn’t be able to hear my talking because of the wind.

So … how was your week? What are your storm stories? Are you a RSS subscriber to FredMcKinnon.com? Do you read Alex’s Betterthan___?” Give me some comments for the weekend.

Billy and Alex have great stuff. I guess I just don’t understand the desire to have more readers. I’d rather just do my blog the way I think is God honoring and maybe people will read it. But…at the same time I do understand the desire for more readers.
I guess I just contradicted myself

sadly, i’ll be cleaning my yard pretty much all day.
Thanks for the love Fred! Nice and sunny out here on the west coast. Billy rocks, love reading his stuff. I’m hovering around 160 readers. Tyler, I explain more here about growing the blog readership.

Fred,
That storm looks kickin’ man. Glad you are ok.
Tyler,
I don’t think it’s a direct desire for more readers – more like a desire to build a better blog and readers are they a by-product of that.
I’ve been kickin’ up my game in terms of how I blog and I feel am producing better content (whether that be funnier, more insightful, more unique, more authentic…)
When I started trying harder I saw my readership start to jump all on it’s own – so my goal is to hit 100 readers before 2009. Of course a giant RSS button and a push from a buddy doesn’t hurt either

Hey Fred!
Looks a little like Hugo, huh? What a way for us college freshmen to begin a college career… I’ll never forget the “Hugo Bowl” in ’89 – what fun! Anyhow, I am gonna link to you on my page, though I am just a little ‘ol Mommy blogger who talks about potty training, laundry and dishes! I am so glad I spotted you in the comments (ragamuffin soul) and came over to see if it was you. Crazy, right? You’ve got a great blog!
I have to get my sis in law to do all the techy stuff on my blog because I am a technical dummy… RSS? Link to only one post? CLUELESS! Some things never change.
We just got back from a week at Tybee, and may be down in Jekyll in September…
