FreePlay Friday (Politics and Celebration)

Posted on August 29th, 2008 in Free Play Fridays, Politics by Fred McKinnon

(today’s FreePlay Friday graphic was generated by ME … haha, thanks to “cooltext.com” … no FreePlay Friday graphics were submitted this week – if you’d like to make a graphic and have your blog pitched right here, just email me a “FreePlay Friday” graphic! )

Hey Everyone, it’s “FreePlay Friday” (view all “FreePlay Friday” Posts) … the day where I post whatever I want, on whatever topic(s) I want, with no regard to whether or not it does (or doesn’t) apply to the main theme of this blog, which is worship, worship leadership, church life, and music. What makes “FreePlay Friday” so much fun is that I want YOU to participate by either commenting on my topics or by entering your own, totally random “FreePlay Friday” thoughts in the comments section of the blog. So all you hundreds of RSS Readers need to just click on over now and finish the post on the site so you can participate. (please?)

Family:
Not much to report this week. I have an incredible rendition of “Old McDonald” that I captured on my “Voice Memo” application of my cell phone this week – Rebekah was singing at the top of her lungs in the car.  I can’t seem to get it exported in a format I can use online, though.  My Dad (Bill McKinnon) had knee replacement surgery yesterday and is recovering in the hospital in Macon, GA.  How ’bout praying for him.

Blog:
Celebration yesterday – passing the 200 RSS subscribers mark.  If you didn’t comment, I’m asking everyone to go here and leave their name, city, state, country, how you subscribe, and what your favorite topics are.

Politics:

I don’t go there often on this blog.  But it’s “FreePlay Friday”!  So here goes nothing …

I watched Obama last night.  Have no doubts about it, this is one of the most charismatic, inspirational, well-spoken, inspiring communicators of this era.  When I heard him speak at the DNC in  2004 I said to myself, “better watch this guy”.  I can say with assurance that Obama won’t be getting my vote in November; however.  I could list a bunch of reasons … even if I lay the religious issues aside, I just don’t like the idea of “the government” being responsible for us.  I don’t like the thought of the government paying for my eduction, penalizing me when I succeed (taxation), etc.  As for taxes, no candidates meet my preference – a flat tax across the board.  I am strongly opposed to having “tax brackets” based on income.  I can’t vote for a Pro-Choice candidate in good conscience, either.  I realize the Presidency is about more than one or two issues.

As for McCain – I like him.  I wasn’t so excited at first, but I’m more excited.  Last night I was applauding his class when he released the congratulatory ad last night.  I’ve moved one of our extra “TV’s” from Rebekah’s room into my studio/office today as I’m all caught up in the flurry of this magnificent “secret” of who the VP nomination will be.  His campaign directors are brilliant – they have taken the day after the DNC and Obama’s massive spectacle last night and DOMINATED the news cycle.

But all of this aside – as I watched last night, I couldn’t help but pause and pray.  I thanked God for Obama’s nomination.  I’m proud that our country has progressed enough to nominate an African American (a TRUE one, Kenyan father, American mother!) to the highest office of the land.  That speaks volumes for our contry.  There is speculation that McCain could nominate a female VP in the next hour.  That speaks volumes for  our country.

One thing is certain.  We have our issues, our problems .. sure.  But I am PROUD to be an AMERICAN, and I thank God for it.

So … what are YOUR THOUGHTS on the political climate this election cycle?  Let it rip!

McCain just announced Sarah Palin as the VP candidate. Outstanding choice, a young, conservative, pro-life, family-minded woman. She’s not afraid to speak her mind and hold her ground. Good choice.

    Mike,
Watching it now on Fox News. WOW!

  • christi

It’s all strategy. Not to say Palin isn’t qualified as a Republican VP candidate, but don’t you think McCain’s strategists are also putting stock in countering the edge of the progression of an African American candidate that Obama’s campaign brings by selecting a woman VP? Don’t get me wrong… I’m thrilled to see both in the running in the name of progression (Not only for that reason, of course. I believe they’re qualified candidates). But, I do wish I didn’t feel like the strategists were playing on it so much.

    Hey Christi,
Def., strategy is heavily involved, no doubt! But I think it’s good strategy – we shall see!

Christi, politics have always been about strategies.

I’m watching her speak now, and whether it’s just a strategy to counter or not, she’s a GREAT choice!

Definitely, a little more excited to say that I can now “lean” towards a McCain/Palin ticket instead of feeling left out in the cold.

Fred, no doubt bout it, Obama is a brilliant speaker, but I’ve always felt, and still did last night, that he speaks in very broad sweeps and vague motions. He paints a brilliant but broad stroke. I love hearing him speak, but always feel like he hasn’t really said much after I’ve listened to him for an hour.

Here’s to hoping we can all come together for the good of the nation and make a good choice based on issues, and not pipe dreams.

Republican ticket just got a whole lot better! I am also proud to be a American!

Yes politics have always been about strategy (and require it). What i meant, though, was that I wish race and gender were not part of the strategizing. I wasn’t trying to make an issue of it, as it’s not the central issue anyway and is inevitable. I was just pointing out the cynical way to look at this breakthrough, because sometimes (especially where politics are concerned) that’s the most realistic. But, it’s stil progress!
Also, I noted and will say again that she is very qualified as a candidate, as is Obama. And that’s the point. And again I say I’m thrilled at the mix and the match up!

Technically by sheer executive experience she is MORE qualified to run for president than Obama is..hahaha!

    ha :)

I do believe Obama talked specifically about change happening through individuals, through people, not just government. I see your point though Fred.

I was really impressed with McCain’s thoughts on worship during the Saddleback interviews.

I really have not made up my mind on this one, and although I like Obama as a person, I am wary of him for the same reasons that you listed. I think McCain made a great choice for VP and that may end up swaying my vote in the end. I think there is going to have to be some major changes regardless of who gets elected!

  • http://heatherblankenship.wordpress.com Heather B

Yep, the republican ticket looks far better to me now! I was really struggling about who to vote for, since neither Mccain nor Obama appeal to me. Obama is a great communicator, with a ton of charisma but I agree, he speaks in very vague (translation: shady) strokes! :) Just something about him that leaves me wary.

As an original Bush supporter, a woman, and a christian, I just cant vote for McCain. I strongly believe that he in no way support womens issues. I honestly believe that the VP choice was not his it was the republican strategist. Playing on those Hillary voters that refuse to vote for Obama. As an independent, I feel as though the republican party has lied to the public in so many ways I just cant trust them anymore. Anyway, I could rant for days on this subject. So thanks for the moment Fred and I know I am a minority here but its ok cause God loves me anyway…hahahaha

I will not be voting for a Pro-Choice, Pro-Gay Marriage candidate either. I just cannot go against my values, especially when it comes to lives of millions of babies.

Thanks for sharing your personal thoughts.
