What’s Your Day Look Like?
Posted on September 18th, 2008 in Church Life, Life and Family by Fred McKinnonHey Everybody -
OK, so I’m breaking ranks and posting something that could have NOTHING to do with worship, worship leadership, etc. … and it’s not even Friday yet.
One thing that I love about this blog is the community we build. Twitter really helps with that. I wanted to bring it home today. Here’s a glimpse of my schedule today. I wanna hear about yours.
6:00 AM: quiet time/devotional time.
6:50 AM: get JM and Will up and dressed for school
7:00 AM: have b’fast with the family, Bible story, prayers
7:30 AM: finish tying shoes, combing hair, make sure kids are ready for school
(Note: these are struck through because though it’s the daily plan, I turned my alarm off at 6:00 and never knew another thing until around 7:35. Thanks for letting me sleep in, Joy baby. Though she never reads this blog, I’m thanking her!)
7:45 AM: kids out the door, shower/get dressed
8:00 AM: go upstairs and do HPP work (pack last nights orders, answer emails)
9:00 AM: head to SSCC for work
9:00 AM – 12:00 PM: emails, messages, prepare for tonight’s rehearsal, make sure all the lead sheets and chord charts are good, walk through the setlist, and today, reconcile by church visa statement.
NOON – 1:00/1:30′ish: Thursday Lunch in the Mezzanine – a bunch of us on staff bring in our lunch, eat a quick sandwich in the Mezzanine while watching SportsCenter, and then play Halo 3 on XBOX 360 (we have 4 of them, networked together, with 4 big plasmas. I lose every time)
After Lunch – 2:00: return phone calls, emails, print leadsheets for rehearsal
2:00 PM – 5:30 PM: go home for a few hours (normally to see kids b4 rehearsal, but today I have a studio editing/mixdown session with a local Music Minister)
5:30 PM: head back to SSCC, make sure food is ready for rehearsal, final stage setup if necessary
6:30 PM: food arrives for rehearsal
7:00 PM – 9:00 PM: SSCC rehersal
9:00 PM until: go back home, train new part-time employee on HPP Enterprises e-biz stuff.
Whenever that’s done, I’ll hopefully crash.
Vacation (just Joy and I with no kids) begins in 3 more days.
Let’s see a quick recap of your schedule today!
Fred

Food at rehearsal????
Mike,
Man, throw kids in the mix, and our days look similar, huh!?
RE: FOOD – yeah, we take care of volunteers, and it’s a critical part of our budget. Nothing elaborate, Dominos gives us a 1-topping large for $6.00 … so I can spend about $25-30 (w/ driver tip) per week, and have 4 pizzas delivered at 6:30. It gives us (the band/volunteers/lighting/av/sound/vocalist) time to come in after work, eat together, talk, laugh, fellowship, and just relax before hitting the stage for rehearsal.
The way I see it – many of these volunteers come straight to the church from their all-day jobs … and we seldom get done before 8:30 or so … so the least we can do is invest $30/week into feeding them.
Chalk it onto the “HOSP902″ budget line item!

Hey dude, I like the way that scheduling thingee looks. Is it free? Or is it one of those high dollar programs that professional musicians can afford as though it was nothing at all?
6:00-6:40 This is the time frame that I usually wake up in without the alarm clock.
6:40-7:15 Help wake up kids (usually one call on Ethan, two on David and three on Julia), breakfast, brushing hair, and giving out threats not to make the trip to school late so Sandy won’t have to take Ethan all the way to school. (He catches the bus from David and Julia’s school to his)
7:15 – 8:15 Quiet time, work on book, check email, whatever I feel motivated to do.
8:15-8:45 Shower and get ready for work
9:00-2:00 Whatever my boss-man tells me to do
2-3 lunch
3-6 See 9-2
6-bedtime (anywhere from 9:30-12:00) Whatever my wife tells me to do!
Simple, huh?

And weekends? Whatever my wife tells me to do, too.

Robert,
“whatever my wife tells me to do” .. hahahaha, I love it!
RE: the calendar … it’s the FREE iCal program that comes on all Macs. But, you can use http://www.google.com/calendar for free … it works great, too!

You’re so right. We do come straight from work. If I had a team and rehearsal, I’d do the same thing in some form or another.
Way to go Fred!
