Worshiping with the Word

Posted on October 1st, 2008 in Church Life, From the Word, Worship Leadership by Fred McKinnon

Hey Everybody -

"For the Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow, it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." Hebrews 4:12I just finished leading an hour of worship and prayer here at SSCC.  We do this every Wednesday at noon.  For obvious reasons we spent a lot of our time worshiping and praying about our economy and the current financial situation.

About half way into the meeting a lady came to the mic and begin praying some of the Psalms.  It’s electrifying to hear God’s Word being prayed back to Him.

After she finished I felt led to just encourage everyone that if they had a Scripture on their mind to stand up and read it out loud.  I repeated a couple of verses, my own paraphrase of them at least, and opened things up.

For the next while we had person after person speaking out and declaring God’s Word.  It was awesome.  At one point I found myself chuckling, thinking to myself “how could we ever be worried”?

My point – hearing God’s Word stirred my faith, my confidence, and made me ever-more aware of how incredible our God is.  It enhanced our time of worship in a big way.

So many times we think of “worship” as singing songs.  But the reading and celebrating of God’s Word is a beautiful act of worship.

“For the Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow, it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12

With all that’s going on in our world these days – I’d like to hear from you.  What Scripture(s) are jumping around in your spirit today?

Fred

Romans 8:28 — God truly does cause ALL (good and bad) things to work for our good. Just gotta press through and trust Him! <

  2. Chris Nevins (NewSong) says:

John 4:23 – “Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father SEEKS.”
I love this verse in that God seeks worshipers, not worship. He doesn’t need our praises; we need to praise Him. Adopting the lifestyle and mindset of a worshiper, brings about changes it in us. It puts us in a proper relationship with God.

I have a few scriptures mulling around my brain right now . . . but the main one right now is Amos 5:24. I know . . . the book of Amos! LOL! But I just finished blogging about justice and it’s link to righteousness. Check it out . . .
    Amos 5:24
But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever flowing stream.

Genesis 22:5 He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.”

Oh to have the faith and trust Abraham did to state that the two of them would return from worshipping God. When what’s in front of us looks to be impossible may our faith be bigger than the obstacle.

  5. Daddy says:

The one scripture that keeps bubbling up in my spirit is Luke 1:37. “For with God nothing will be impossible.” This is also stated in Matthew 19:26 and Mark 10:27.

  6. Amanda says:

Some scriptures that have been on my heart lately are those related to the Church and how it should function to be healthy, namely:

    Philippians 2 (first half)
    Ephesians 4
    Romans 12

Also, for my own church in general, Psalm 66:8-12 – this has been on my heart for about a year, and then I was reminded of it again this week. I think our church isn’t there yet though… we’re still going through fire and water, but God will be faithful!

That’s great. When we read scipture at church that’s what we call it…”Worship in the Word.” But I am more encouraged about how that came about in your worship time. Awesome.
