FreePlay Friday – Ramblings
Posted on October 10th, 2008 in Free Play Fridays by Fred McKinnon
Hey Everybody – it’s “FreePlay Friday” where I can get personal and talk about whatever I want – even if it’s not related to worship, worship leading, music, etc. And I’d ask you to get involved and throw your random ramblings in here as well!
Here’s the bottom line for this Friday, October 10 2008. I’m gonna throw out some quick points and let ya’ll get the discussion going. I’ve not felt good this week – at all. All week I’ve been feeling kinda weird. I’ve had this tight, “butterflies” feeling in my stomach, like I’m anxious or worried about something, but I’m not aware of anything. Nobody in our home is resting. The kids are all waking up in the night – which is VERY uncommon. Joy hasn’t slept well in weeks. I tend to sleep OK, but don’t wake up rested and have non-stop dreams all through the night. Nothing that seems significant.
Over the last few days I realized I’ve been running a low-grade fever since Tuesday. I suspect that has something to do with it. I’m trying to exercise (I’ve played a good bit of raquetball this week), and though I don’t feel like it, I’m trying to be disciplined in prayer and Bible Study. Unfortnately, this thing that’s “on me” leaves me pretty apathetic on the spiritual front as well … so whereas I need to be digging deep and praying in the Spirit, I find myself just lethargic. So pray for us.
Enough of that. How ’bout a few ramblings:
1. Economy. It stinks. I was not in favor of this ridiculous bailout, and I can’t see that it’s done much good. I couldn’t believe Obama’s comment in the debate “if small business can’t get loans, they can’t make payroll”. What ever happened to not HIRING more employees until your business can AFFORD to pay them?
2. Politics. Heck, part of me wonders if I’ve watched too much TV, and that’s why I have this great uneasy feeling. I don’t like the way things are shaping up at all. Granted, politics is a hot topic – but honestly, I am sitting back and watching the likely potential that our country is about to take a non-stop turn into socialism that will ultimately bring this great country to it’s knees.
3. Sports. UGA Bulldogs are playing Tennessee this weekend. Go Dawgs. We need a win – a BIG win.
So what’s going on with YOUR LIFE?

Well, bro. I don’t think it’s gonna get any better. This country has dodged the bullet too many times and been bailed out to our hurt. There isn’t a worthy candidate for president (except Palin). Take some tylenol. Drink a bottle of nyquil before bed.
I believe we’re in that time where the scripture Craig Walker used the other day comes into practical understanding:
“If you have run with footmen and they have tired you out, then how can you compete with horses? If you fall down in a land of peace, how will you do in the thicket of the Jordan? Jeremiah 12:5

Hey Fred,
That uneasy feeling is also happening on the west coast. I can pinpoint mine, but under a gag order from our church leadership at this time, which adds to the uneasy feeling at home. Your right on with continuing to stay disciplined in our prayer and scripture reading.
Economy – still getting a paycheck!!
Politics – ugh

We have three kids in college and are in the middle of an interim time at church and due to our recent church crises we’ve lost alot of people (like 50%) and – of course – giving is down. So add the economy to it and it gets really scary as a church staff member. If I didn’t have kids in college I would be okay with just going back to volunteering and that would help our church out I’m sure. So with the pastor search team at a critical point and worrying about the economy, I feel uneasy too. And yes the election is – again – not one I’m happy to be voting in.
I hope you get to feeling better. I’m sorry you’ve had a difficult week. Try to rest and take care of yourself.
But I am thankful for the blessings in my life. Sometimes I feel like the news tells me it’s horrible but my life feels good, so I am confused.
One thing I’ve always taught our youth is that when things are good, everyone looks alike. Anyone can be nice and appear to have character when things are humming. It is exactly in times like now, when the world fearful and in a panic, that we can stand out as Christians and show the world a better way. As much as anyone, I would love to keep my job, nice house, and retirement account, but I know worry is useless.
Matthew 6:34 (NIV)
34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
“What ever happened to not HIRING more employees until your business can AFFORD to pay them?”
Ha! I had the exact same thought!

I don’t think McCain would disagree with Obama’s statement, since he did support the bailout. In today’s age, most small businesses are started on loans.

I want McCain (or heck, anyone) to stand up and say, “Stop waiting around for the government to change your life. You want it changed, change it yourself. LIfe isn’t fair, so stop whining that it’s the government’s job to make it that way. And while I’m at it, stop blaming the government when it was YOUR decision to buy a house you can’t afford.”
Obviously we’ll always have the poor with us, and they need to be taken care of. But sheesh–I hear people saying, “What is the government going to do for ME?” I’d like for the government to stay OUT of my life for the most part.

Everyone here in Ohio is very worried too! It is very hard not to get caught up in all the worry. I have stopped watching debates and biased news. I think our trust in the Lord is definitely going to be tested. I don’t remember a time when we face such a mess. If we as Christ followers are this worried, can you imagine what it would be like not to have the Lord right now? Terrifying!
