FreePlay Friday – Halloween 10
Posted on October 31st, 2008 in Free Play Fridays by Fred McKinnon
It’s FRIDAY!!!!!! Time for “FreePlay Friday” – the day I just catchup and talk about whatever I feel like. I invite your comments as well. I’m listing 10 random things today – how about jumping in and giving me at least 3 in the comments … I enjoy reading about your life, as do others!
1. It’s HALLOWEEN! What does that mean to you? I grew up trick-or-treating. I went through a phase in church life where I considered the origins of the holiday, and opted out of doing anything that celebrated it. Now, with 4 kids, we’ve done both the church carnivals, but we kinda started trick-or-treating again, too. We typically let our kids dress up as heroes or “good characters”. This morning I quoted the Scripture about how we aren’t supposed to imitate evil.
Have we backslidden?
2. I’m off this morning to Glynn County Tax Commissioner in hopes to appeal my ridiculous tax bill for a lot my brother and I own. (Anyone want to buy a nice little lot in Sea Palms North Cottages?). Wish me luck.
3. My buddy Joel Klamert has a humongous giveaway contest on his site right now. You want a chance at some cool stuff, check it out!
4. I’m still enjoying the use of Twitter. If you aren’t on Twitter, check it out and “follow me”. My favorite “tweet” that I sent yesterday to the Twitter world simply said:
“Dear God, I’m still praying for two tickets to GA-FL for my son and me. You’re running out of time. Love, Fred”.
I got several replies, but none from God, that I’m aware of. Today, it would say “you are REALLY running out of time”. Seriously, don’t think I’m being sacreligious. I am really praying that somehow, God could provide those two tickets.
5. Speaking of Twitter – I’ve switched to “TweetDeck” over the last couple of days and I’m really starting to like it.
5. Soccer season is almost over. Our first game on Jekyll Island tomorrow is at … hold your breath … 8:00 AM. That’s sinful. That means we have to get up at 6:30 AM on Saturday. I’m not happy about that. If we win at 8:00, we have to play at 11:00. If we win then, we have to play next week. Otherwise, we’re done.
6. For the record – I don’t like this early voting nonsense. What if things change over the last few weeks, and you change your mind? Too late for you. For me, I’m waiting until Nov 2.
7. Want to read an incredible story? Checkout the 3-part life story of Brent’s wife, Tam. Brent and Tam have become friends here in “blog world” and I’m happy that I’ll get to meet them and spend the week together in Nashville in February. This is an amazing story – read it here.
8. I blogged a “True/False” blog a couple of days ago that has really blown up. I’ve you haven’t taken part, jump in on the question here.
9. Robert Pooley is a pastor friend of mine that lives in Gulf Breeze, FL. He pastors Coast Community Church. I led worship there once, it was awesome. We pray and fast together each year in January, except last year. He was one of the dudes that got me started on blogging. But … he grossed me out last night with this Twitter exchange:
from myself to @lesliebrooke: yeah I noticed! I’m on stage with ur hubbie @jaysellers
(context – Brooke replied to a tweet I’d sent trying to “track” myself, which is disabled on Twitter. I was sending the message from the stage at SSCC, while waiting on rehearsal to get started. Brooke (lesliebrooke) was at work, and was missing her husband, Jay (jaysellers). Jay was playing electric guitar and was on stage with me.)
from Brooke to me: @fmckinnon aww, I miss him! Blow him a kiss from me ![]()
(context: Brooke, what are you thinking, I’m NOT going to blow a kiss to your husband for you)
from Robert Pooley to myself, Jay, and all followers: If @fmckinnon blows a kiss to @jaysellers … someone send me a copy… I will get good use out of that for years.
Nice way to catch me off-guard, on-stage, during rehearsal Senor Pooley. Game on. (grin)!
10. TheWorshipCommunity.Com – I have to plug this all the time. If you’re not subscribed via email, RSS, and/or Twitter, you are missing out on some incredible content. We did our first ever “ReVue” this week, a review of the new Hillsong London’s worship album, “Hail to the King”, written by four different worship leaders. Have you ever checked out a single album review, written by FOUR different people from FOUR different areas? It’s a cool concept, and it’s been getting hit like crazy. Check it out.

Hello Fred , Just a couple of comments- First of all to your need for Ga/Fl tixs. I used to go to the event year-in and year-out. I believe I went 8 years in a row. If I can just say, do not get discouraged about not finding Tixs.It is really an adult atmosphere down there and God may be sending you a message that you have a better seat at the house! It can get really rough down there, trust me on that one. I use to love to go trick-or-treating when I was a young’un but you have to be super careful , especially now -a – days. Two buddies and me got jumped and kicked to smitherines for our candy when we were about 11 years old. That was the end of my Halloween ventures! Please be careful during this great time for “Kids”. Peace and happy Friday!! RV
Hey man,
Thanks for the comment (and awesome drumming last night!). Last year was my FIRST ever GA/FL weekend, and it was awesome. I didn’t find the environment too bad at all, but maybe I was just in the right places. I saw some folks drunk, of course … but overall, it was a great experience.
As for the trick-or-treating, if somebody tries to jump us, my Rebekah will probably take them down! Haha, no, really, we’ll be super careful! We’re always going in a large group. (then again, my family is a large group by itself)!
For the Kingdom,
Fred McKinnon

(1) Well, bro. Ethan is wearing a black hooded shirt with a skull face. David is dressing in a nifty skeleton outfit. Jula will be sporting a cheer-leader’s outfit. So I guess I’m REALLY back-sliding, huh? (Except for Julia, of course)
(2) Good luck on the tax thing. You think it’s bad now? If the election goes as I think it will, just wait till next year . . .
(3) I guess we all know who’s in the “big daddy” category with THAT plug
(4) A co-worker of mine turned down FOUR tickets yesterday. A friend of his was selling all four for 250.00
Que’ Lastima!!!
(5) Not doing soccer, but David and I are participating in a golf tournament tomorrow.
(6) I voted last week. Thought I was going to have to fight. There were at least 20 people in there trying to register to vote (even though the dead-line was past). One young african-american was getting very hostile and belligerent. Seeing as how there were only old, retired people and ladies working the area and he was getting more and more riled about not being able to vote this go-round. I started moving toward him to ask him to calm down. Thank God he did before I got there. I was a little out-manned in the place.
(9) (skipping over a few here) I would desperately want to acquire that picture, too!
Well, remember a true saying: YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE, AND NOBODY GETS OUT ALIVE. SO ENJOY LIFE EACH DAY AS YOU CAN!

Hey Robert,
Sounds like a big night planned – and some scary ghouls. I miss you guys – we need to do another campout at Alpha SOON. Game?
Golf? I’ve never known a McKinnon to play golf?
LOL! I’m cracking up here. What you don’t know is that I started to type “Give him a kiss for me”, but quickly realized that you’re a bit (okay, A LOT) homophobic and that might just push you over the edge
Maybe I should’ve just asked for a handshake?!
P.S. Heard you had a blowout last night – more laughter ensues

Leslie, you would have heard things you could only imagine if you asked THAT boy to kiss another man. It’s the only scripture in the bible us McKinnon men have problems with!
Fred, you know me! Always pushing the edges. If there ain’t never been a McKinnon to do that, then by golly, the sport deserves better! Get a McKinnon in there!! Make it better!
Ok, ok. Maybe not better . . . . we’re just trying to keep that little white ball on the grass. And seeing as how we’re only able to hit the little sucker ten-twenty yards, it’s really not that hard. But it’s fun!

Lessie… three things, huh?
1) I’m exhausted. After work, my daughter Shannon was swimming in her conference finals. She qualified in two individual events. She took a second and a half off her best event – 100yd breaststroke. But that meet lasted until 9:30, after which we had to go to the church and decorate for tonight. Which leads to…
2) Hallelujah Night tonight. No, we don’t “do” Halloween. Ironic, as my wife and my first real date was a Haloween party. Anyway, running the children’s ministry, this is our big event of the year. We’re hoping to get a lot of unchurched kids. Our senior pastor and his wife are having a hospitality for parents in the other building. Wer’e doing a carnival theme, songs, a skit – and the Wii on the big screen!
3) We start college hunting next week for Shannon. I’m taking her up to Rhode Island for an open house. Then we have to make trips to Boston and Dartmouth, Mass. The tutition numbers are SCARY HUGE!
Mikes last blog post..More Blogs on Blogs
Well here’s my 2 cents worth – all my kids are older so Halloween is no big deal to us. Here’s a shocker – my kids have NEVER trick or treated, but I didn’t much as a kid either. It just wasn’t a big deal to us and we’ve sort of done church stuff every year. Wait, I take that back. I think last year or the year before my youngest went trick or treating – he was 15! haha I don’t even know what we’re going to do tonight………
My hubby leaves for Germany on Sunday and so i’m focusing on some time with him before he goes out of the country. No early soccer for us (Fred, you learn to pray your kids lose in these tournaments – there is NO GLORY in playing all day!! With three kids that played baseball I came to be relieved when we were eliminated. yes!!) We will probably work in the yard some and listen to Bama play.
I will also be finishing up a blog for a Worship Mission Blogging Project I am heading up for the Christmas season- we’ll shoot video today and I’ll finish it up hopefully by Monday. I’ll shoot you an email about that as I hope the worship community at large will pitch in and help!
This week you can pray for me – I have some additional medical testing on Monday that I’m very nervous about due to some family history.
Finally, I echo the comments on http://www.theworshipcommunity.com. I enjoy that site so much! Alot of content there on different topics……
The camp-out At Alpha is instantly available. You guys just set it up.
I have nothing to say.
thanks for linking to the story fred. that means a lot to have your support!
halloween? backslidden? i dunno. just because i buy things from target who supposedly supports child porn does that make me a porn addict? no. just a target addict
but seriously. God looks at the heart. are you truly imitating evil? is that your intent when you dress up your kids? i dont think so. youre allowing them fun and showing them that we, christians, do not have to exclude ourselves. we can get in to our communities, rub shoulders with them and be an example for God in what we do. and we can do that as a power ranger while taking strangers candy.
my 1 cent.
tams last blog post..have you ever…
Thanks Tam,
I tend to agree 100% .. and would’ve responded sooner, had the p*0rn word not made your comment email land in my junk folder!

hmmm … random things today
- thinking about finishing up a guitar track i promised my drummer later on today (if i get the chance)
- using technology to help me with day-to-day stuff at work. today, i started using expect (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expect) to test out access to our mail relays
- i had red dragon sushi roll & yellow tail sashimi for lunch
- my son is dressed up as a pirate today
i hope that is random enough. enjoy!
1. Halloween – I agree with Tam and you Fred. Halloween is a matter of the motivation of the heart.
2. Speaking of heart: Lauren’s 4th grade class celebrated Halloween by making up gift bags for the orphanage in Haiti as their party activity. They loved it. You should have heard some of the notes they included in each bag.
3. I’m not a fan of crowds so I’ll be enjoying the game from my couch on this (hopefully) deserted island.
Halloween. my thoughts. I participated
Thanks for the link love and I am really looking forward to meeting you and so many others in February!
And…my wife rocks!

Our baby boy dressed up like a pumpkin. I thought it was cute, especially for a baby. On that same note, I prayed harder for our city the night before Halloween. Just a thought.
