Gratitude – Mr. Potato Head Version
Posted on November 4th, 2008 in Church Life, Faith by Fred McKinnonHey Everybody,
In my “Sunday Setlist” review I mentioned our “FamJam” service, specifically the “Mr. Potato Head” version of the story of the Ten Lepers. Several of you commented, emailed, IM’d, and twittered that you’d like to know more about that … so let me share it with you.
About “FamJam” – where “kids bring their parents to church”. This is a service that we hold “in between” the two main services on the first Sunday of each month. We have a 9:00 and 11:00 service in the Main Sanctuary, and have “FamJam” with doors opening at 10:10, beginning at 10:20, and concluding around 10:50. For more info on “FamJam”, check out that section of our church’s website.
Each month we have a special theme or “virtue” that we teach. This month that virtue is “Gratitude”. All the stories, skits, and teachings are centered on learning about this virtue and the kids (and parents!) really do GET IT.
There are several segments of the “FamJam” experience – worship with a great team of dancers and singers, hilarious skits, prayer, lessons, etc … one segment is called “The Word”. During that segment, someone usually comes out and gives a brief Bible lesson on the particular “virtue” or “theme” that is being taught that month in the Kid’s ministry.
This month one of our volunteers, Reid, created a homemade animation story for our “The Word” segment. Watching it on the laptop and online isn’t really as incredible as being there, live … seeing those kids and parents engaged in this video … hearing the outbursts of laughter … it was a great moment.
Props and kudos to Reid and of course, to Bo, Deb, and all those on staff at SSCC that make the Kid’s Ministry one of the best places anywhere to be. (OK, I’m biased).
Here’s a lesson in gratitude, the story of the Ten Lepers, like you’ve never seen before:
(note: due to trademark protection issues, we proactively notified Hasbro, Inc. of our usage of “Mr. Potato Head” in our video, and they declined our request for usage. Their response was professional and courteous, but we understand their decision to protect their trademark. As a result, and for our own compliance, ethics, and protection, we have removed the video. I’m happy to say that Hasbro didn’t find the video and tell us to take it down. We proactively contacted them regarding the video and requested permission to continue usage. For those who were able to enjoy it while it was posted, I hope you enjoyed it!
