FreePlay Friday – You’ve GOT To See This!

Written by Fred McKinnon on January 30, 2009 – 10:58 AM -

Hey Everybody!
(RSS Readers – click over to view this entry on the web … you’ve got to see this ….

Well, you’ve GOT to see what? Well, the new FredMcKinnon.Com!

I wanted to kickoff the new year with a new theme, and I finally got around to figuring out what I want … I’ve had the privilege of working with Gabe Taviano as the designer, and highly recommend working with this guy! (Gabe runs GodsMac.Com and the GodsMac podcast, in addition to his design work).

What’s new?

For one – I hope it’s a WHOLE LOT easier to navigate. My subscribe and contact icons are big ole’ things you can’t miss in the right sidebar, along with an expanded music player – I hope to continually upload new songs and new music for you to enjoy.

There’s a new 300px ad space underneath it … these ads are part of the Highest Praise Network of ads running on my blog, HighestPraise.Com (next in line for a major overhaul) and TheWorshipCommunity.Com. They are great sponsors, so check out their stuff.

We’re still making some tweaks, but I hope you like it!

Let me know, and let’s hear what’s going on with your weekend!

I Read This …

Written by Fred McKinnon on January 29, 2009 – 9:28 AM -

Hey Everyone,

Here’s a few “That’s Quotables” from this week in my reading … one of my goals this year is to READ more.

“We should never worship God in an unprescribed manner”. (Pure Praise, Dwayne Moore)

“Friendship with God is based on our present obedience, while a relationship with him is based on our permanent adoption as his children.” (Pure Praise, Dwayne Moore)

“In the same way, we worship leaders are in danger of merely going through the motions of “professional praise” without connecting on an intimate level with the One to whom the praise is directed.  Friendship with a personal God is an absolute must for us.” (Pure Praise, Dwayne Moore)

(for more incredible discussion on the “Pure Praise” Bible Study, join the discussions at TheWorshipCommunity.Com)

“Francis didn’t criticize the institutional church, nor did he settle for doing church the way it had always been done.  He rose above those two alternatives and decided that the best way to overhaul something was to keep your mouth shut and simply do it better “. (Chasing Francis, Ian Morgan Cron)

“Seek to be the change you wish to see in the world”. (Ghandi, as quoted by Ian Morgan Cron in “Chasing Francis”)

“To be always relevant, you have to say things which are eternal.” (Simone Well, as quoted by Marshall Shelley, Leadership Magazine)

Speaking of Leadership Magazine – Chris (a blogger and worship leader in Canada, I’ll be meeting him in a few days, checkout his blog) IM’d me yesterday and told me that my blog made a list of “Helpful Worship Blogs” in the Winter 2009 issue.  Wow – I have that magazine on my desk that arrived last week, and haven’t had time to take it in yet … but here it is … way cool, and thanks for the honor!

helpfulblogs

So what are you reading right now – and what’s speaking to you?  (Yeah, hopefully, the Bible is included) … share you favorite quotes or verses from things you’ve been reading this month.

Comment away!

Free Worship – Singing Together, but Separate

Written by Fred McKinnon on January 28, 2009 – 9:46 AM -

Hey Everyone,

This is a busy week as I prepare to get everything in order for not only the re:create conference next week, but for a Women’s Conference that I’ll be leading next weekend as well.  So, rather than type a long post on worship leadership, I’d like to start a discussion today.

This past weekend, guest speaker Tom Tanner shared about corporate prayer.  He discussed times when everyone prays out loud – at the same time.  His point was “you aren’t praying to each other, you are praying to God”.  He also said “if you take turns and go around the circle, and let each person pray, you don’t really get much praying done, but if everyone prays, it’s different”.

Granted, I *LOVE* corporate prayer like that.  I get out of my seat, walk the floor, and go for it.  On the other hand, there are certainly times when it’s appropriate to listen to someone else pray, and agree with them in prayer.

I’d like to take that though process over into the act of singing.  I grew up in the United Methodist Church the first 16 years of my life, then was involved in Charismatic churches from my high school years throughout college and the first dozen years of my professional “full-time” ministry.  Though the church I’m a part of now isn’t necessarily “charismatic”, it’s definitely filled with people who have experienced God’s Holy Spirit in powerful ways and that power is displayed in changed lives every week.

What I call “free worship” is when the congregation has a time to just “sing” out loud … but whatever they want.  It’s the most beautiful “unorganized order” I’ve ever heard.  Have you ever experienced it?  The sound of hundreds  – or thousands of voices, singing out individually in praise to God?  Though there are individual voices, I believe it rises to God as a “corporate” praise.

For some of you, that thought probably makes you very uncomfortable.  For some of you, it’s your favorite place of worship.  We don’t really experience that in my church now, and I miss it.

Take a listen to the first 15 seconds or so of “Hosanna” from the Paul Baloche album, “A Greater Song” … this is an example of what I’m talking about:

Written by Fred McKinnon on January 25, 2009 – 11:52 AM -

sunday-setlists

Hello everyone – welcome to the 27th consecutive week of “Sunday Setlists”.  If you’d like to be reminded about “Sunday Setlists” each week, I’d encourage you to subscribe to this blog.  You can subscribe by:

  1. RSS
  2. Email Notification
  3. Twitter

This is a blog carnival with worshipers all over the world.  This is a way to share what our worship services look like.  You don’t have to be the Pastor or Worship Leader – we welcome recaps from all worshipers.

To participate, simply follow these steps:

  1. Blog about your worship service(s) this week.  If you don’t have a blog, feel free to leave a comment below with your recap.  Share about the songs, the stories, the sermon, the media, and anything else that you would like to share.
  2. For those who are blogging, please place a link back to this entry in your blog post.  Most people say something like “I’m posting this recap in collaboration with other worshipers at the “Sunday Setlists” blog carnival at FredMcKinnon.Com.  You will want to link back here:
    http://www.fredmckinnon.com/myblog/2009/01/25/sunday-setlists-27/
  3. After doing Steps 1 & 2, fill out the “Mister Linky” form below.
VERY IMPORTANT:  in the URL field, you should enter the full URL to your specific “Sunday Setlists” blog entry – not your blog’s default, homepage.  Homepage links will be deleted.

If you aren’t sure which URL to use – publish your blog post, and then click on the title of your blog entry.  Copy that page’s URL.
  4. Leave a comment below, and then visit the other bloggers sites and see what other churches are doing throughout the world.

*** Sunday Setlist for St. Simons Community Church, January 25, 2009 ***

We had two great services today.  I shared the worship leadership today with Harriet, one of the incredible worship leaders here at SSCC.  If you’d like to see the public view of our “plan”, checkout our PlanningCenterOnline.Com public view.  (sound, lighting, A/V cues and notes are not seen on the public view).

Walk In:  “Revival” (Robin Mark, Revival in Belfast)

Open Set:
“For All You’ve Done” (Hillsongs)
“The Rock” (bluesy, shuffle – a crowd favorite)

Second Set:
“Holy is the Lord” (Tomlin)
“Jesus Messiah” (Tomlin)

Skit:  We are on the 4th and final week of our “Change is Coming” series.  The first week started with one of our youth pastors, Jon Blankenship, coming out on stage and trying to upstage David (the Senior Pastor) about his preaching style.  It was hilarious.  Jon comes back today to wrap things up, and says that David could learn to shorten his sermons – basically, that HIS kids in Youth can get the entire Bible taught in 60 seconds or less.  A couple of the girls in the youth group come up and did a “rap” that takes you from Genesis to Revelation in 60 seconds – it was so funny.

Sermon:  “Change is Coming”, Part 4 – Sanctification is a process – Change is coming, but it isn’t instant.

Closer:
“Take My Life” (Holiness) – Vineyard/Scott Underwood

Let’s hear about your services!
Fred
