I Almost Died This Morning

Posted on April 28th, 2009 in Fitness by Fred McKinnon

Last night I downed a dose of NyQuil for the 2nd night in a row.  I went to bed, hoping to wake up free of this horrific head cold and congestion.  Before going to sleep, I posted one last Twitter message that said:

OK – Night 2 of NyQuil, Tomorrow morning at 6:00 AM my life will change. For the better? We’ll see – will blog it in the AM (if I’m able)”

My alarm went off at 5:30 – way too early.  But I’d already committed to it, and off I went.

Today I began a 9-week venture called “Outdoor Regimen”.  It’s an outdoor, boot-camp style cross training class, led by fitness instruction Eric Taylor.  I’ve blogged about my weight, my physique, and the conviction I’ve had about my body.  I finally committed to do something about it.  I shelled out some serious cashola which will help me feel the pain in more ways than one.  I’ve got a crew who is holding me accountable.

I thought I might die this morning – but I survived.  Session 2 is right around the corner, and I’m already dreading it.  But this is something I’ve just got to do.

19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.  (ESV – YouVersion.Com)

Needless to say, I GOT MY BUTT KICKED.

  1. Hang in there Fred! You can do it! :)

Kudos to you for taking this step! I totally agree with the verses you listed. I had 40+ years of treating my body like a slum instead of the temple of the Holy Spirit that God intended. I’ve gotten better at it, but it’s still a battle, every day. Keep up the good fight, and be comforted in the fact that the sore muscles are a sign that what you’re doing is working!

  3. I’m jealous. Hang in there!

    Fred,
Good for you! And thanks for adding that verse at the end, to keep it all in perspective of how Christ sees things. It sure does make it more powerful when we are committing ourselves to Him, and not just to ourselves.
    Hoping the best for you,
    LeAnn

    • LeAnn,
Thanks – I told the trainer the other day that this was more of a spiritual decision than anything. For 2+ years, I’ve heard God speaking about it, and I’ve been in rebellion. I really feel that God has been keeping me in a holding pattern – no new creativity, no new vision, and His blessings and favor have been held back as a result of my rebellion in this area. Trying to make that right.

I know exactly what you’re saying, and I commend you for acting in obedience in an area that we sometimes forget about. It’s easy to remember to obey in our tithes and in our actions, the way we treat people, the kind of witness we are…because those things are taught all the time. But taking care of ourselves, presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice to a Holy God…thank you for the reminder.

Awesome Fred! I need the same thing. I need prayer that I will get fully convicted and COMMIT to that lifestyle.

  9. Fred,

Something is happening this week across the country regarding fitness. Some may attribute it to spring, but I think God is moving.

I pray for strength for both of our journeys.

  11. good for you about getting your butt kicked.

    feels good.

sorry about the nyquil. at least you didn’t tweet something you regretted in a drug-induced stupor.

  12. Chris says:

Stay strong. Just remember…you can do this! I like to turn to Paul as he writes, ” Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. ”
