Would You Come to St. Simons Island?

Hey Gang,

I’m hoping to get lots of comments on this post – so even if your comment is “no way” or “can’t afford it” or “not interested” – please take 15 seconds of your valuable time to comment.

For a long time I’ve been entertaining the idea of hosting a personal retreat here on St. Simons Island for worship leaders, songwriters, etc.  After spending time at re:create this past February (which is the most incredible event of the year, and I have no intentions of trying to duplicate that – I just think 1x per year isn’t enough to see you folks!) I realized just how much we need to connect.

I’m just testing the water here.  This is my idea:

Purpose:

1.  Fellowship and Networking
2.  Encouragement and Rest

Agenda:

A lot of hang-time.  By the pool.  On the beach.  Around the table.
A small number of sessions for some laid back, acoustic-style worship and prayer
Some “keep this confidential or else” discussions where you can vent, cry, or encourage.

Pretty simple, eh?  I don’t really want to put some big show on where you come and drink from a fire hydrant of information.  There are plenty of places for that.  Truth be told, without rest, fellowship, and a casual, non-threatening way to converse, our minds are too tired and saturated with life to even absorb any of that.  As for the big-name celebs in Worship-dom, they are welcome to come … and invited, but aren’t necessarily part of the roster.

So would this retreat be a “social event”.  Absolutely.  One of the few environements where you can sit around a pool or walk on the beach with some people that you may only “connect with” via Twitter or Blogs.

Would it train and equip you for more ministry?  Maybe, that’s up to you.

Would you leave with your soul refreshed, a new awareness of God’s Presence, and inspiration to do His work?
I SURE HOPE SO.

When:  maybe this fall.  October or so.  Only a few days (ie. maybe Thurday – Sunday, or even just a weekend)
Where:  right here, St. Simons Island.  Location TBA.  Maybe a nice hotel like “King and Prince” where I can swing some great rates.

What would it cost?
Travel here:  (for those far from Southeast GA, JAX and SAV are about 1-hour away, BQK is 20 minutes over the causeway)
Lodging:  (I think I can negotiate a decent rate)
Food:  depending on our size, we’d reserve some restaurants, cater in, or just be “grab someone and do your own thing”.

Here’s what I need you to do:
1.  Comment below.
2.  Tweet this.

definitely sounds like something i would be interested in…obviously cost would be a determining factor…also family/work schedules…

Yes. I’ll be there. for sure.

    :)

That sounds right up my alley but don’t think it could happen this year.

Always looking for a good reason to come back to SSI. And this is a very good reason!

I would love to come! I’ve been thinking about coming there ever since you posted about the view from your window. :) I’m also going to South Africa this fall, so hopefully the dates won’t conflict.

Fred you know I’m in. I’d love to help minister. Let me know how I could serve this gathering.

Heck yeah man. This sounds like a great idea! We all definitely need times like these to renew and refresh our bodies and minds!

    i’d go!

    I’d come to SSI. I hear it’s a nice place. :)

And I’d love to help with this any way I can.

      Hey Chris,
But of course! I’m just brainstorming, but the initial response is positive. Of course, the price tag is still a mystery. I say we do something, even if only semi-locals can come … we’ll see. Been on my heart for about 2 years.

  • http://www.karencreel.com Karen Creel

    I would probably be interested.

  • Rebecca

SSI is one of my favorite places in the world. What better reason to go than to hang out with a bunch of folks that are madly in love with Jesus and love to worship.
Please let me know if and when you decide to do this…I’d love to come.

I think that’s a great idea! I look forward to seeing this progress and will help however I can.

I would definitely be up for this – as with others, cost would be the utmost concern – but THIS is where the heart of what I have been learning about worship is – talking things over with others, hearing those far more experienced and just worshiping in a group of people whose audience is the audience of One….good luck setting it up!

I’ve already passed on two St. Simons opportunities with a lighthouse group I’m active with…and will pass on this opportunity as well, as the expense from SEA is a bit out of my league at the moment.

    Hi Fred,
I would love to come if it fits the budget. I’m only a couple hours away and in need of a time of refreshing! Fellowship, beach, encouragement, rest, ocean, time with Jesus…who would NOT want that? Keep me posted.

Would love to, but it all depends on the specific weekend it ends up being scheduled for as I have a short family vacation coming up that month. Sounds awesome though!

  • Serena Trout

I would welcome the chance to look inward as well as relax in a positive-motivational manner. Price is not as much of an issue as the date of the event.

  • http://www.luigiworship.blogspot.com louis tagliaboschi

I would start saving now for that. Sounds great.

Sounds like fun! I might be able to scrounge together some $$$.

    where is St Simon’s Island?

Would it involve me having to go on a boat of some sort?

    When?

This sounds like it would be a blast!! I attended the Mt Hermon Songwriters Confrence last year and it was amazing. I don’t think I can attend this year because of $$. However, something like this might possibly be even better than Mt Hermon was last year (it was amazing). I like the collection of people that commented on this post which is a good sampling of the people that would probably attend.

I would say, take a look at the way the Songwriters Conf at Mt Hermon runs things to give you an idea of how a successful “event” like this might work. There is no reason to reinvent the wheel, right?

Anyhow, sorry to be long. All this to say I would love to attend something like this with you people!!!!

Awesome idea/concept. A time of community for worship leaders is something I long for. There are so few per church, it’s hard to have or create a connection with someone who “knows” our struggles.

I would love to do this…

The likelihood I can is small…but greater miracles have happened.

LOVE the idea. Wouldn’t be able to make it. May have to set one up here in Africa somewhere at some stage.

I’m not a Worship Leader or Songwriter. So I will not be attending. Sorry. But it sounds like a ton of fun and I will pray for you and the event as you move along.

    • http://www.fredmckinnon.com Fred McKinnon

Jace, though it’s targeted to worship leaders, songwriters, etc … it’s really targeted to those who are using their gifts for creativity. It’s Christian-based, and there would be lots of worship – but we certainly wouldn’t turn you away!

Sounds perfect. If possible, I’d be there.

    Fred -

I’d be interested and possibly able to go. I’d love to meet some more folks face to face.

We have a thriving group of creative folks here – artists and dancers and such – and they’d probably respond as well, if it seemed to be something like you responded to Jace – for CREATIVES. I think that would be a great mix, personally – not just musicians and songwriters, but folks from the larger spectrum of creative sorts. I know some of our folks would love it…

    Keep us posted.

You KNOW I want in!!! :)

      Mandy,
I don’t think it would even be an option to NOT have the Thompsons represented.

I live in the Dallas area and would love to do something like this but it’s probably a little far for me and money is an issue. :(

ohhhhhh we neeeeeed this. Don’t know if we can pull it off, however. I’m already asking for a miracle in order to take 2 students to NWLC. I’ll keep watching for your updates just in case a second miracle occurs. :)
