This REALLY Hurts …

Written by Fred McKinnon on June 13, 2009 – 9:33 AM -

RE:  You Can’t Advertise Problems Away: Ad Campaigns of the Mainline Denominations
(copied from ChurchMarketingSucks.Com, HT from a Tweet by @tpaulding)

“Study after study has shown that religions that grow are the ones that are hard-core in some way. They have something that differs sharply from the culture in which they operate,” says Boston University’s [Stephen] Prothero. “That’s the problem with mainline Protestantism: It’s not different enough from mainstream America.” (emphasis mine)

Do you tend to agree or disagree with that quote?

Fitness Friday – What Are You Doing in the Morning?

Written by Fred McKinnon on June 12, 2009 – 8:50 AM -

Hey Gang,

So I’m back with a new installment of “Fitness Friday”, part of the blog carnival hosted by Bryan Patrick over at PursuingYahweh.net.  We’re taking Fridays to blog about our quest for better fitness – something I’ve been lacking for a LONG TIME.

So must of you know by now that I started an outdoor “Regimen” training program about 7 weeks ago.  Tomorrow is the final week, so I have two more sessions.  But, I am opting in for a new 12-week session that starts immediately after this one ends.  So anybody out there who is local, you can jump in and join the punishment starting Tuesday June 23.  Just let me know and I’ll get you the details.

So here’s a pic from our trainer’s blog of us getting started at 6:00 AM, as the sun is coming up over the ballfields at Mallory Park.

regimen-dark

Doesn’t that just look glorious!? (do lateral jumps over those hurdles, back and forth for 30-seconds, 5 times … I promise you’ll be winded).

I can’t believe I’m about to signup for another 12-week session.  I’m trying to get my buddies to go along, and have already recruited one of our pastors on staff at SSCC, and perhaps more.

This morning I weighed 221.5.  I’ve consistenly been less 225 or less the last week or so.  I think the big drop this AM was a result of about 2-3 hours of either food poisoning or some stomach bug that kept me up most of the night.  Yuck.

Well, that’s a wrap for now.  You can see the exercises we are doing and fitness/nutrition info on our trainer’s site at:

How will you worship?

Written by Fred McKinnon on June 10, 2009 – 8:31 AM -

Hey Gang,

I’ve got a question for us to ponder and answer today.

HOW will you worship God today?
Can you think of one thing you’ve done today (it’s only 9:30 AM EST for me), or that you intend to do, that is an act of worship?

For me, I’m going to serve the homeless and hungry today at an inner city ministry called “Manna House” today. I don’t share that because I want kudos from anyone. But, as I was praying this morning I felt God say that He felt this was an act of worship to Him. That assumes I do it because I want to serve them, obey His Word … not because I want recognition, of course.

That’s just one example. How about you?
