When URL Shorteners Die …

Posted on July 4th, 2009 in Technology by Fred McKinnon

#1 – this is a nerdy, tech post.  For most of my readers, this will totally bore you.  You’ll be more interested in this “Urgent Prayer Request” post that I just published.

#2 – for you tech/blog nerds, read on:

Today, just as I was publishing the above-mentioned blog about Kate McRae, who desperately needs our prayers … my blog posts were riddled with a bunch of nonsense error codes because of my “TweetThis” plugin.  (I just wasn’t able to get John’s TweetThis without a plugin to work on my server, btw!).

In the TweetThis plugin, you have the option to choose one of a huge list of “URL-Shorteners”.  At the time, I was depending on “th8.us”.  Well, the folks at th8.us had a server failure, which caused my plugin failure, which caused my blog issues, which caused a BUNCH more blogs using this plugin with the default “th8.us” server setting to go south.

Thanks to the trusty folks at HPP Christian Web Hosting, the techs replied to my tech ticket within minutes and had it figured out.  A quick change in the plugin’s settings to use bit.ly instead … and we’re back in action.

I used to own HPP Christian Web Hosting – I sold it when I came aboard as the full time Worship Pastor for SSCC – and I can tell you, I certainly don’t miss those holiday tech tickets and server issues!
