Lasik Surgery Thursday, Aug 20 – Please Pray

Posted on August 19th, 2009 in Life and Family by Fred McKinnon

lasik-eye-surgerySo I’m reporting to Dr. Imhoff’s office in Brunswick, GA tomorrow morning at 7:00 AM.  We’ve been saving and hoping for years that I could get Lasik surgery for years.  Tomorrow, Dr. Dillon will be the one whose hands need to be smooth and steady.

I’ve worn glasses or contact lenses since 5th grade.  Very near-sighted.  If I take of my glasses or contacts, I can’t read the calendar on the wall.

Hopefully, that all changes tomorrow morning.  Please say a prayer that everything goes well.  Pray for no adverse side effects.  Pray for perfect vision and quick recovery.  I BELIEVE that your prayer matters.

Thanks!

Will be thinking of you and the doctor tomorrow and lifting you up in prayer. How long will the surgery last? Will you be able to use your eyes immediately? Or will you have to be blind for a day or two?

      Hey Bro,
Surgery lasts all of a few minutes … and recovery is quick … I should be able to see pretty good, almost immediately, but have some precautions and recovery involved – not sure of all that just yet.

    Just out of curiosity…

What is it that drove you to the surgery, the risk, and the tremendous expense?

The reason I ask is this: I’ve been tremendously nearsighted most of my life, and have worn glasses since I was 9. During high school/college I wore contacts, but it turned out I was allergic and could not wear them past about 20 or so. So I’ve fumbled with glasses for the last 22 years, and clip on sunglasses and the lot.

But I still can’t justify the expense of this surgery, and can’t really see a “need” beyond convienice. (Not like I’m a model or a scuba diver or something…)

So I was wondering if there was something more than convienience in this for you.

Not that I criticize that, BTW. If you’ve used wisdom (and prayer) in this, more power to ya! And I’ll be praying all goes well, of course.

      Mike,
well, 1st and foremost, it’s clearly a luxury, not a “need”. That’s why insurance doesn’t pay for it. Here’s the deal – glasses are a real pain for me, especially 3/4 of the year down here in humid, South GA where everytime you go out and in they fog up. Contacts are great, but they constantly dry out my eyes, and I go back and forth with a condition in my eyelids that is caused by wearing the lenses.

so – it’s a convenience, and an luxury, and one that, though I hate to spend that kind of $ … for the freedom it will bring, the pleasure it will bring, and not having to buy replacement lenses, solution, blah, blah … I just can’t wait … I’m excited, and have no guilt!

The contacts often get to a point where I can’t wear them, for different issues – which takes away a lot of the things I do, raquetball, other sports, I can’t even wear sunglasses at the pool, boating, skiing, etc … wearing regular glasses there is a real pain. Sure, I could buy prescription sunglasses, + keep buying contacts every couple of months, plus keep buying solution, drops, etc … yada, yada, you get the idea.

      It’s worth it to me.

I had lasik eye surgery 11 years ago now, 2nd best thing I ever did (after inviting Jesus into my life 7 years ago!).
The first thing that really excited me after having it done was being able to read the alarm clock when I woke up in the morning! Small thing I know, but it’s just one of the many little things you’ll notice.
Surgery takes about 30 seconds per eye and it took me a few days to recover, but that was 11 years ago, it’s probably changed quite a bit since then.
Still have perfect eye sight now!
I’m sure it’ll go well for you but I’m praying anyway :)

Of course, your Mom and I will be praying for you intensely. I am solid in my faith and belief in the power of prayer. “…The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” (James 5:16b). And I’m so grateful that the righteousness of Jesus Christ has been “imputed” to me!
