When Murphy Comes to Town
Posted on August 21st, 2009 in Faith, Life and Family by Fred McKinnonOne of my heroes of life, Dave Ramsey, refers to “Murphy’s Law” often. I don’t like Murphy’s Law, “whatever can go wrong, will go wrong”, personally. I mean, how much more of a “negative confession” can you have?
Dave refers to “Murphy visiting” when that law seems to be happening. It dawned on me today that “Murphy” has come to town and has been visiting the McKinnon household. It’s all been piling up, but I’m just now noticing the reality of the stuff we’ve been dealing with:
- fuel pump quit, requiring a tow and new fuel pump on my Explorer
- more tires eaten up on Joy’s van, new tires, and another front-end alignment
- water faucet on back of house broke off, no easy fix, it was not put on properly when the house was built
- tub faucet quit working, pretty easy fix, but still required hiring a plumber to visit
- yesterday, the motor on our main A/C for the house died, having to be replaced
- I got new eyes … so that’s not Murphy, but very expensive bill
- had to replace tires on my Explorer
- the odometer on my truck quit working this week
- Amazon.Com is nailing me on every possible front, now making me quit selling some of the most profitable products because they are “prohibited items”, yet, are being sold by dozens of other sellers.
- Amazon.Com is nailing me telling me my pricing can’t be higher on my own site that the items on their site – again, where did that come from.
(I suspect I’ve got a competitor out there who is policing our listings in an effort to weed out the competition)
So, it’s kind of frustrating. Yet, all these inconveniences and expenses are but a passing moment in eternity, and the worse of these would be nothing for so many who are suffering throughout the world.
Yeah, I know – “stuff happens” … but today I’ve decided it’s time to take a step back and look at things. It’s time to have some prayer and ask God if there is anything going on that would leave us vulnerable to such a barrage of stuff. Maybe that seems silly to you. I don’t look for demons under rocks or blame sin or the devil for every inconvenience. But I do think that part of the “prosperity” that I believe in carries over into our possessions, our favor, our relationships, etc … and that it’s often directly associated with our obedience to Christ.
What say you?
