Our pastor has been peaching this, and once again today. A young man witness today of how the revelation of this and putting it into action changed his course. Reading and meditating on his own, instead of just listning to the Pastor, thinking that was enough, has caused him to walk in God's Will not his own.

If we just relised the differance that coming to the Lord upon waking makes we would be to scared to run into our day thinking we can do it ourselves.

Hi Fred,

Thanks for the confirmation of what the Lord has laid on my heart. We, as an extended family, are going thru a very tough time right now and God has been confirming Himself to me thru His word in a very special way. I don't know that I could get thru this time without His word. So, I applaud you for giving us that gentle nudge!

Thanks Fred. Every man deals with this struggle and I agree that spending time in the Word is critical. Just being in the Word - not necessarily studying scripture that deals with this issue. My wife and I have been reading through Ezekiel and Revelation together each morning. Some passages in Ezekiel deal with sexual immorality but the point is just starting each day together in the Word and in prayer softens any attack that Satan may attempt to wage.

Hi Fred,

I've of all the persons never really took time to read any of your posts on highestpraise.com and today for some reason, I just was going thru my list of emails and the tagline caught me Who are we kidding, I of most persons have struggled and do struggle with thoughts of lust and the list goes on, in my everyday /night I just find it hard to overcome these thoughts and, yes as you mentioned in this post I would like some counselling via email in this matter and some upliftment, I have made a promise to My God and I do intend to keep it, but every now and then I falter and just feel like a dog going back to its vomit as mentioned in proverbs. Thank you for this post.

Ever in God's Love

I think it is religion that lures us into believing that if we think about God, or read a few scriptures that's enough. Somehow, we must speak it out and tell the devil to get out of our way. I have been in a bad marriage for years, trying to get out MY way. I have been waiting for God to do something when I have been doing nothing;except complaining. There are some genuine concerns but I keep going back to thoughts of myself instead of Gods answer I should be speaking the word each day over the whole thing. we did begin putting our armor on each day , and praying together some at my insistance. My husband never has led our family..he's content to sit back and watch cartoons. I struggle everyday with love is patient, love is kind..he doesn't even live with us and it is still hard the 3 times a week I see him. But I must break through into love is patient, kind, prefers the other person, is longsuffering, has manners, respect him. Don't know if we will make it but God can make all things possible and work them to good to those (us) who love him and are called according to his purpose. Our little boys are so hurt, and so is our adult son. There are some serious issues that only God can change and heal. I want our family back together with God at the head, not me put there by a husband who refuses to make a decision and then blames me for every mistake. Help us see what covenant means. Help us honor You, God. Help us be Christians first, then husband and wife.

I am deeply encouraged to see that God has only confirmed my thoughts with yours. Lately, I've been longing for something more in my life other than my everyday schedule. So many times have I just resorted to watching tv, hanging out with friends, and so many other busy-making schemes. I would always do whatever would make me feel at ease. I would do what takes no effort so I can relax and have time to myself.

But more and more I have seen a need for me to be more knowledgeable, more thirsty, more desperate to know God more. The words I speak, the way I live my life directly takes a toll on everyone else around me. Even among the leaders around us, I fail to see many examples to defy self-satisfaction in order to fulfill a need within us to have God change us into His image.

All i know is, as we draw closer to God's heart, we must read His word to persevere, to tell people about Him, what He is all about, and to know Truth (not truth taken at face-value, or secondhand truth). We need to see truth through first hand experience, an experience that will edify the church and being more people to Christ!

Thanks for sharing! I hope all will be encouraged by this message and I hope many will seek God like never before!

Bernard is right - guilt does nothing to motivate us, at least, not with any real authenticity ... my purpose isn't to spread guilt or condemnation ... on the other hand, conviction from the Holy Spirit .. YES ... and I pray that's what people feel!

Dave - Don't do this out of guilt. Guilt will fade and you will fall back to what you were, then you will feel guilty again. Simply do this out of love for Christ. It's a lifestyle change, not a reaction to guilt.

well my friend you have certainly put the guilts on me. I am guilty. however I realize my guilt and I am trying to overcome my lazyness and lack of commitment. I pray to God to call me closer to Him. that of course is not enough. I must put forth an honest effort.then trust in God to make it happen. I could use your prayers in this matter. I want so badly to devout my life to Christ 24-7. I dont know if this is possible living in such a secular world. But I am going to try. thanks for the wake up and your right who is kidding who. WE so often kid ourselves into beleiving that we are doing the best we can for God when there really is much more we can do. Let us all be faithful to God and be truthful to ourselves. God bless

I go through times of not reading the bible at all, or reading it out of obligation, or reading it and getting frustrated because it doesn't seem to help me. Then there are times where I read it and I hear a word I really needed to hear. Or I read on and on and feel like I need all of the words and wish it to all absorb into my head and heart.
My bible is underlined and has notes from me or people I was listening to. One time though, the only time this has ever happened to me, a scripture from the bible popped out into the most deepest part of my heart and it caused me to ball my eyes out. It was Deuteronomy 8:7. Many of days I fall short of reading God's word and training my mind with truth. But there is another part that I feel is the hardest. DOing the word of God. We can read all day long. Real victory comes from practicing doing what it says. Your honesty Fred is a virtue.

I go through times of not reading the bible at all, or reading it out of obligation, or reading it and getting frustrated because it doesn’t seem to help me.
Many of days I fall short of reading God’s word and training my mind with truth. But there is another part that I feel is the hardest. DOing the word of God. We can read all day long. Real victory comes from practicing doing what it says. Your honesty Fred is a virtue.

I don't know you, though I feel like I should. The words of your blog, especially this post, seemed to jump off the computer screen and reach up and slap me in the face. Just yesterday as I sat with my inner circle of women, we talked and prayed about this same issue. I am tired of struggling with things in my life and it was my dear sisters that said yesterday that maybe God is tired of simply being an item on your checklist of things to do today. Maybe things aren't 100% in your marriage because your have replaced your Savior with your Husband (ummm, guilty) Maybe things aren't perfect with your kids because they have replaced your quiet time with your Lord (ummm, guilty again!) Maybe your self image isn't wonderful because you have stopped seeing yourself through His eyes and started seeing yourself through the world's eyes (once again, guilty as charged) After these dear women said these things to me, in love mind you, they also reminded me that for something to be revived, something has to die. Your post confirmed that because after all...WHO AM I KIDDING?

Thanks for sharing your heart.

I hear ya. I'm with ya. Praise God for a solid reminder and for being my strength when I am so weak.

This year to keep me in the word on a more regular basis I subscribe to the RSS feed (and bookmark on my cell phone) the BibleGateway.com Bible in a year plan.

http://www.biblegateway.com/resources/readingplans/index.php/2009/09/10/?plan=1&version=51

I tend to obsess with books (especially when I was on a teaching team). When we studied Ephesians, that's all I read (beside cross references)--and I read it over and over and over and over (maybe 20 times).

When I started the reading plan (I still obsess with a particular book, but I'm getting the whole word), I ran across so many verses I had forgotten, like old friends. They encourage me.

So every morning when I get on the train, the first thing I do is click on my biblegateway bookmark on my cell, and read the day's reading.

Thanks Fred for this!
The word of God is not only ancient it is more importantly living and active today.
One thing many people forget is that "temptation is not sin". Therefore, when we are tempted (ie lustful thoughts in this discussion), we flee from them to the word of God.

I have a great deal of respect for people who tell it like it is. To me, that is acting in love, so thank you for being direct. I make sure that I have my God time each day. It's not to brag, it's just something I've learned over time that I can't do without. It is my life-line. I was talking to a friend the other day and said I really hadn't heard from the Lord lately, and she reminded me in my time with Him I needed to actually be quiet long enough to. LOL... So that is what I am working on now, not coming with my list, but coming to listen. He tells us to pray without ceasing, which means He wants to be the center of His universe, not have us be the center of His. ;-) Thank you for this!

Thanks for this; I struggle w/making time in the Word, (and time for uninterrupted, listening prayer,) and many other believers do also, especially many in leadership positions. It's easy to slide into the mindset that because I'm thinking about the Lord and my responsibilities in the Church (worship planner/leader) that it's spending time with Him...I know it's not, but often think, "I'll do this thing, then some time will open up to sit and be quiet...doesn't happen! For me, it's a matter of making time with Him and in His Word THE priority, (not just "a" priority.) Yeah, even when I do, sometimes outside urgent things rearrange my time, but consistently seeking Him first makes it easier to get back to keeping Him my priority after the interruptions are gone.
