So I’ve Been Thinking About You Lately …

Posted on April 3rd, 2010 in Life and Family by Fred McKinnon

I’ve been on vacation earlier this week … and for whatever reason, I didn’t sleep very well.  (I suspect it had a lot to do with being out of my zone, combined with sharing a room with 5 other people, albeit, my lovely wife and kids).

I’m finally home, yet … here I am, typing into this blog at 2:08 AM.  Once again, I couldn’t sleep.  Don’t get me wrong.  I go through phases like this.  I hate them, but they are real.  I think I get “overload” in my brain and it’s racing so much that I can’t slow it down.

So tonight, of all things, I was thinking about you … the folks who are readers on this blog.

Some of you are family.
Some of you are locals who worship each week with me.
Some of you are friends from afar, we’ve met, shared meals and laughs.
Some of you I’ve never met.
Some of you I see every week, but you’re in the shadows, lurking secretly, never exposing yourself.

I started wondering about the community here, or lack thereof.   And I realized some things that I’d like to change.

#1.  I ask you to comment and create community, but I often neglect to reply back.  Recently, I commented on two of my friends’ blogs and I actually made myself somewhat vulnerable and asked a question in the comments … and I’ve gone back and refreshed those blogs countless times, hoping they’d answered.  The fact that my comment/question wasn’t answered left me feeling a bit rejected (get real, Fred!) … but believe me, I GET IT.    The email box associated w/ this blog has 206 messages in it right now.  I totally get it.  That doesn’t change the fact that I was hoping to have dialog w/ those authors and friends.

Nevertheless, I am going to try my best to stay engaged with you.

#2.  I don’t comment on YOUR blogs.

This is a biggie.  Here’s the honest truth.  My blog reader is still full of the blogs that I discovered when I first got into blogging.  I could rattle of dozens of bloggers who all started blogging around the same time I did.  We’ve met.  We’re friends.  But unless you’re lurking, I don’t think you are here anymore.  And I’ve not been reading blogs myself.

But there are so many NEW people here.  So many of you who have become the “new” community that is faithful to stay connected and engaged for this season of life.  And yes … we all have seasons.

So … here’s what I’m asking.  If you’re here, if you’re still reading, if you still want community in this little slice of cyberspace, leave me four things in the comments box:

1.  Your Name
2.  Your Location
3.  Your Blog URL  (I will subscribe to it and come visit when I can, and I will comment and show myself!)
4.  Your Twitter ID (I will follow you if I’m not already)

I’m going to reset my blog reader and fine-tune my Twitter list.  I’m ready to connect with you who are hanging here.   Are you there?  Can you hear me now?

    Hey Fred!

Just started reading your blog a few weeks ago and I really enjoy it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about life, faith, music and ministry with the body of believers. I’m also a worship leader and musician as well as a music teacher. Thought I’d connect with you in this small part of the virtual kingdom!

      Seth,
Hey, thanks so much for stopping by! Too bad we’re both up so stinking late! I’m going to try and go BACK to sleep!

      • http://www.gehrkesregards.wordpress.com Seth Gehrke

Not a bad idea on the sleep Fred! I should probably rest up for our band rehearsal tomorrow too. We just had a powerful Good Friday service and great discussion with friends and it’s all still rattling around afterward. Anyway, I’ll catch you around later. Peace.

You’re in my reader! I think this is a good spring cleaning for you! I thunk I need to do some reader purging as well! I always try and keep the people I know and interact with in “real life” high on my reader list. It helps strengthen my overall friendship with them!

Glad to be friends with you I’m both spaces: on & off line!

    • http://www.russhutto.com Russ Hutto

*IN both spaces! I’m up at 4am!

PS would you consider a mobile theme plugin? A lit of times I read on my smartphone.

      • http://www.fredmckinnon.com Fred McKinnon

        Russ,
Oh man, first .. thanks. I guess you’re being up at 4:00 AM means I won’t be the only one on a caffeine IV drip at rehearsal! I’m SO glad God moved you here.

As for the mobile theme .. I installed WP-Mobile-Edition and it’s active, so I wonder why you aren’t seeing it?

Hey Fred. Thanks for all you do to keep the community of worshippers worshipping. Man, I think we met back in 94 or 95, something like that, when you were at Christian Renewal. I would stop in at SSI as I drove to visit my parents in Florida. In any case, over the years I’ve appreciated your efforts, thoughts, views and take on ministry as well as your help musically when I’ve asked. All the best, keep up the awesome work for the kingdom!!!!

Thanks Kit … it’s so much fun connecting w/ everyone, but when it’s folks you’ve spent years knowing, worshiping with, laughing with, crying with … it’s unique. Thanks for being here. I gonna try and visit the ole’ Kit Palmer blog as well! And of course, I have you in Twitter!

And Excel … I hate Excel … but maybe that’s just because it’s Microsoft. Just kidding .. I think I figured it out!

Fred, I don’t have a blog – I have Facebook which I am not faithful to keep up – and my e-mail. But I am faithful to read yours and have replied several times. I thoroughly enjoy your blog and sometimes hesitate to comment because, after all, I am Mom.

    • http://www.fredmckinnon.com Fred McKinnon

      Hey Mom!

I *LOVE* having you show up here, and Dad too. Love getting your feedback, though I’m blessed enough to catch you on IM every day and have our “Saturday checkin” phone calls.

Speaking of which I just may go to rehearsal and sleep the rest of the day on THIS Saturday!

  • Tracie

I don’t have time to read many blogs, but yours I always find time to read!

I think it helps me to connect better in worship on Sunday having some sort of connection with the worship leader. Hope that makes sense. And you are cool so there is another reason why I read your blog :)

      Tracie,
I always welcome your comments, love to see you stop by, imagine you smiling! Thanks for doing so … and I appreciate that perspective of a fellow SSCC worshiper. I believe that this kind of stuff CAN help people relate and connect better. It’s one of the reasons I’ve encouraged David and others on SSCC staff to blog! See you tomorrow!

      • Tracie

Thanks Fred for your encouraging words. May God pour down His blessings on you and this blog!

Thanks for hosting your blog and for starting Sunday Setlists – I’m not always regular with posting my setlists on it, but I do take the time to read what everyone is doing – I’ve gotten some good ideas and new songs from it, so it’s definitely had an impact on my ministry. Thanks!

      Matthew,
Awesome, man, thanks for jumping in. You know “Sunday Setlists” is over at TheWorshipCommunity.Com now, right?

      Chuck,
Absolutely, bro – it was awesome adding you to the list of “online dudes I’ve met!” … and wow, what a fun night we had in the dude cave at stogies! Thanks for being here.

    Hi Fred.

Frequent lurker, occasional commenter! I enjoy your blog, for which I get e-mail update notifications. Always like reading your stuff and being provoked to think about things.

Oh awesome – I’m glad you’ll be there in May … can’t wait to hang out. I wasn’t following you on twitter, so thanks for posting the link .. I’ve got you on the list now!

    Hi Fred,

Thanks for thinking of us! Yes, I still follow your blog and look forward to your posts. I’m also looking forward to meeting you at the AAW Retreat next month (I can finally say that now!) Thanks for posting a comment on my blog recently about worship team singers.

      Barry,
Absolutely … I can’t wait to see you … need to get some more of these worship peeps to register! Part of what I’m loving about the potential of this retreat is that it’s small on purpose, so we can actually get to know each other a bit!

Fred, I applaud you for trying to keep the community here fresh and real. It’s definitely not an easy thing to do! I agree with Russ… I think I need to thin out my reading list a little bit so that I can be more active on the ones I’m really interested in! I often find that by the time I read everything I want to, I don’t have any time left to comment on any of it!

Thanks for chiming in … I just tried to make sure your blog was in my reader, and I got a “Error 404 – Site Not Published” error?

You know who I am, dude. I am good at commenting. But I know how you feel. The whole reason I got into blogging was for the possible “feedback” and “community” that I saw on yours.

Que Lastima! It just didn’t happen, so I know what you mean.

I’m lurking. Read every one of your blogs and will continue to do so and comment when I feel led to.

Talk to ya later! Hope you got some rest.

      Yo, bro …
Always grateful that you’re here. I’m a lame bro for not commenting on yours! Confession is good for the soul.

I’ve been away this last week for my Easter break, so am just now catching up on my RSS, which of course you are a part of :-)

Hope you get some serious encouragement, because you always write good thought-provoking content. I agree with Russ; the blogs of real-life friends certainly carry more weight for me. And of course, sometimes those bloggers whose stuff you just “click” with then become real-life friends too :-)
