God Speaking in 3 Words or Less

Posted on April 14th, 2010 in Faith by Fred McKinnon

God is always speaking.

Are you listening?

What is He saying to you during this season of your life?

As you read that, it came to you.  Instantly.  Maybe you have to think about it for a while.

Share it … in 3 words or less.

For me?

Margin.  Gratitude.  Slower.

For you?

    Shalom.

(In the broader Hebrew meaning, not in the simple translation to ‘peace.’)

    • http://www.fredmckinnon.com Fred McKinnon

      Deane,
Permission to expound granted! (I think I know where you are going, but want everyone to benefit … give us a bit more insight into the “broader” view of “Shalom”.

      • Deane

In addition to peace, shalom means completeness or wholeness or perfectness. It implies health and harmony. When we consider the word ‘peace,’ we often think of tranquility or the absence of conflict.

        Consider this from Colossians 3:12-15
“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace.”

If we read ‘peace’ as ‘completeness’ or ‘wholeness’ instead of ‘tranquility,’ then the passage takes on a different, fuller meaning. It also seems to make more sense following ‘love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”

As God speaks to me about ‘shalom,’ he is revealing how pervasive fragmentation and division is in my life, in our culture and even in the “church” – denominations, pastors/staff/laity. God’s desire for our life is unity, wholeness, completeness, and perfection.

a big ole’ Amen to that. I remember a wise lady from Christian Renewal SSI once saying how we’d not have to contend with “forgivness” nearly so much if we just practiced “forbearance”.

3 words, not a command to me, but a promise from Him:
    “Renew. Revive. Restore.”
It’s a promise I’m clinging to at the moment.

    • http://www.fredmckinnon.com Fred McKinnon

Love those words, Shannon. Are those words that He is doing in you, through you to others, or both?

      • http://www.SaintLewisMusic.com/ Shannon Lewis

All of the above? When I quiet my mind, those are the words – one of them or some combination of them – that hit me out of no-where most often.

    • Deane

God has also been imparting to me the importance of ‘Sabbath’ to me. It is to be a time of rest and restoration.

During prayer a few nights ago, God also revealed this verse to me:

      Isaiah 40:31
But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

When I read the post, two words came through very loudly. I AM.

Now I have a song running through my mind and I can’t find the music / lyrics!

I thought the name of it was “I am”, but CCLI doesn’t help me out there. Pretty sure that I have heard it a number of times on bornagainradio.com.

Phrases like alpha and omega, living water come to mind.

    Hmmmmm…..

Thanks to Melanie over at theworshipcommunity.com. I’ll be able to sleep tonight!

The song is “I Am”, by Mark Schultz.

As I was reading the replies, I was reminded of one of your posts a couple of weeks ago: http://www.fredmckinnon.com/myblog/2010/03/31/age-focused-and-preference-driven/. I was specifically reminded of the following:
“sometimes thinks we’re “doing church” all wrong these days

    1. I feel that entertainment-driven corporate gatherings are creating weak Christians who constantly focus on what is “in it” for them.
    2. I feel that by constantly appealing to “preference” we feed the self-fulfillment monster and isolate those who don’t share the same preference.
    3. I think that we miss the building of true community when our church activities revolve around the big events where someone on stage performs for us.

Instead of a “church” “service” as we typically think of it, I am picturing a group of believers/followers coming together and asking “What are you hearing from God?” Ideally that would then followed up by doing something about it (sometimes individually and sometimes corporately).

Imagine some of the dialogue as someone says that have been hearing God say “simplify.”
Or when someone says that have been hearing “Renew. Revive. Restore.” Or when someone says that they are hearing “unity” or possibly “community.”

Perhaps as the conversations unfold and the action begins the group of believers begins to look like a body (1 Corinthians 12).

    1 Corinthians 14:26-33
What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church. If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God.

Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said. And if a revelation comes to someone who is sitting down, the first speaker should stop. For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged. The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets. For God is not a God of disorder but of peace (tranquility? absence of conflict? or harmony?).

Seasons change quickly Fred. I’ve gone through hell in seven days. Through it all, I have come to hear three simple words that sum up all that He wants me to know. Through everything I’ve gone through and experienced, these three words resound:

    GOD IS GOOD

Sums it all up, don’t it? eh?

    Fred –

I’m not used to giving sermons, but I am privileged to this week. For three weeks I prayed for God to tell me what he wants to tell His church.

I heard all sorts of thing but mostly my thoughts cluttered my head…

    Until last week.

During his sermon, my pastor was praying at the cross and everything was silent and I heard this word…

    WAKE

    One word… not 3.

Not from me, or my pastor, or another church member… but in the silence this word came…

Not because I was tired ( I was fully engaged in his sermon – it was a powerful moment)… but because in this moment I was no longer concerned with myself.

    WAKE

God wants his church to arise and WAKE.
God wants us to be aware of the coming storm, to WAKE to what is around us.
God wants us to pray over the lost like we were holding vigil at a WAKE for the dead. Then, Jesus will arrive and WAKE them from their sleep.
God wants us to be concerned about what we are leaving for the next generation… What are we leaving in our WAKE.

God is call us all to WAKE.

I truly believe if you listen, you will hear it too…

“When the voice of the Lord has awakened the church, the voice of the Church will awaken the Lord, and the power of God will be manifested in the saving of sinners.” – “In The Day of Thy Power” Arthur Wallis
