WHY DON’T THEY ENGAGE IN WORSHIP??

Written by Fred McKinnon on May 18, 2010 – 9:26 AM -

This is the big question I’ll be discussing at the “AllAboutWorship” retreat in Kansas City this weekend.  My breakout session is about corporate participation – why our congregations do (and don’t) engage during our worship services.

What do we (as worship leaders) do that hinder it?
What do we (as worship leaders) to to encourage it?

Whether you are a worship leader, band member, or the worshiper who is in the congregation … your feedback is vital.  Over the next 48 hours I’ll be finishing up my outline and I want your feedback.

My preference is for you to post your answer on TheWorshipCommunity.Com in this discussion thread.  If you’re not a member of TWC, it only takes a second to sign up.  You can also click the blue “Connect with Facebook” button in the top-right corner to join.

Otherwise, leave your remarks right here on the blog … or better yet, leave them in BOTH places!

Pass the word – send this to your praise team, to your church, to your twitter followers, to your facebook friends.  And thanks!

Sunday Setlists for St. Simons Community Church

Written by Fred McKinnon on May 17, 2010 – 9:55 AM -

Hey Gang,

Well, confession time.  Since I moved the “Sunday Setlists” event over to TheWorshipCommunity.Com, and Russ Hutto does most of the posting for it .. I’ve not been very consistent at posting our own recaps.  Doh.  Sorry!

We had a great worship service at SSCC yesterday.  We’re in this series called “Worth Fighting For” and it’s all about fighting for marriage and families.  This week’s service was a bit unplanned, as we decided to feature a couple from our church during the sermon.  They shared about how they’ve had struggles in marriage (like all of us) and how they’ve gotten help.  We ended with a visible demonstration of our commitment to marriages and family when the entire front of our church was filled with the “Marriage Mentors” who have been trained by our Family Counselor and her wonderful team.

The music helped set the environment  …

Walk In:  “Eye of the Tiger” (Survivor) … a great way to get people “in the mood” to fight!

Opening Song:  “Alive Again” (Matt Maher, perhaps one of my favorite songs right now!)
Announcements
Worship:
“Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing” (Hymn)
“You Gave Your Life Away” (Paul Baloche and Kathryn Scott – amazing tune!)

For our closer, we invited people to come to the altars to pray, to ask for help, to commit their marriages, their families, etc.  I thought it would be fun to play a “love ballad” and this one from the early 90′s kept coming to me because of the line “you can’t tell me, it’s not worth fighting for” …

So yeah .. we did it … “Everything I Do” (I Do It For You) – Bryan Adams.  What a blast!

And that’s  a wrap for this week.  See what other churches and ministries did at the weekly “Sunday Setlists” event over at TheWorshipCommunity.Com.

OK Moms – What Makes Mother’s Day *AWESOME* for you?

Written by Fred McKinnon on May 9, 2010 – 6:47 PM -

Happy Mother’s Day to all you Mom’s out there.

Today we celebrate motherhood.  We honor you.  So, we did church today and had lunch afterwards as a family … I told Joy we could go wherever she wanted to go … she chose Barberitos!  Why?  She wanted their salad, and she wanted something quick so that she could get home and rest.

Rest she did, as I took all the kids to the pool, and gave her the rest of the day (and some cash) to go shopping.  I’m feeding the kids dinner, took care of baths, put on the laundry (with our crew, we’ve got a full load of towels and swimsuits every day!) and will get those kids off to bed.

So here’s what I want to know from all you Moms …

“What makes Mother’s Day totally AWESOME for you”?

Redneck Disney

Written by Fred McKinnon on May 5, 2010 – 10:06 AM -

Hey Friends,

I’ve been a bit quiet this week because we, The McKinnon Family, took off right after church on Sunday for a quick trip to what we call “Redneck Disney”.  I twittered and facebooked (is that a verb?) about it and had lots of questions about “Redneck Disney”, so this is the promised blog about it!

We don’t actually go to the Disney parks.  We go to Disney’s “Fort Wilderness” campground and camp.  Tents and everything.  It’s cheap and accessible.  Because it’s inside of Disney World’s massive resort area, you’re considered to be “in” Disney, complete with those handy blue ID cards and access to all of the transportation options.

The campsites at Fort Wilderness are super-clean.  The restrooms/showers (called “Comfort Stations”) are air-conditioned, have laundry facilities, water fountains, hot showers, etc.  Of course, when this trip was booked we were not anticipating it to be in the mid 90′s … super hot for camping.  But the campsites have power outlets so you can bring your extension cords and box fans and stay pretty cool.  We traveled with my brother-in-law and his family, who are Disney pros … so we had a portable fridge with cold drinks, we grilled burgers and hotdogs, we had a canopy over our picnic table, powered scooters to drive around, etc.

So what do you actually get to DO at Redneck Disney?  Well, that’s the best part.  This is a great way to Read more »
