I Finally Got My Blog Back
Posted on June 10th, 2010 in Life and Family by Fred McKinnon
Finally …. I think I got my blog back.
My websites have been hosted on some older servers in the company that I once owned. I got a notice a while back from the new owners that they would soon be “migrating” my websites (and believe me, I’ve got quite a few!) to their newer servers.
Migration. My head started spinning. Remembering those long 2-3 day windows where, for whatever reason, we would have to do a big server migration. That was back in the day when I was the owner of HPP Christian Web Hosting. I’d be overwhelmed with issues for days and thankfully, my top-notch server admin, Parmanand, would always be there to work out the kinks.
So, you can imagine my surprise (and frustration) when I started getting emails the weekend of May 21 that all of the sites were being moved. I was leading worship and speaking at the AllAboutWorship retreat – a time when, simply because of new friends, exposure, and leadership opportunities, you don’t want your websites to be DOWN.
But DOWN they were. Business sites. Blog sites.
Through a series of events, my blog was finally migrated, but the “switch” wasn’t initiated. When it was, all the content wasn’t there. So, they “switched” it back to the old one. Then, they fixed it again. Then, this past weekend … out of nowhere … it was switched back to the old server, but this time, there was no fredmckinnon.com to be found – just a default server page.
Frustrated? Yep.
Surprised? No.
Remember, I once owned a company like this. I did this more times than I can count. I handled the frantic emails and calls of customers wondering why their site wasn’t showing up … waiting for the “switch” … waiting for their ISP to “find” the new location.
As I stroked my grey-filled sideburns (a habit that shows up when I’m anxious), I stopped and remembered how thankful I am that I don’t have to be responsible for that anymore.
And today, my first post since that migration began (which should have never taken more than 24 hours), I am here to say, “Thank You, God – I got my blog back”.
For the Kingdom,
Fred
