Lyric Week Finale – Your Favorite Lyrics

Posted on September 3rd, 2010 in Faith, Worship Leadership by Fred McKinnon

Hey Everybody,

Well this week on the blog unintentionally turned into “lyric week”.  A few days ago I blogged about why I changed the lyrics to “Open Up The Sky” by Jonathan Stockstill, as recorded by Deluge.

Yesterday we discussed (and continue to discuss!) some of the lyrics in worship music that bother us the most.  I have to admit, I started feeling a little convicted.  My intention isn’t to be critical or negative … and I don’t want to stir up petty criticisms towards our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ who are writing songs.  I do find it interesting; however, and never noticed some of the things that were discussed.

So enough criticism – how about some praise?  Today, I’d like to share some of your FAVORITE lyrics.

You know those lines that just “say it” in such a way that everything in you wants to scream ‘YES!”  For the sake of clarity, let’s keep this narrowed down to songs we’d typically sing in private or corporate worship and praise.

So … let’s hear it .. post your favorite lyrics phrases below!

“I’m sorry Lord for the thing I’ve made it when it’s all about you.” ~Heart of Worship, Matt Redman

That line hits me EVERY TIME I sing it. My heart is that God be glorified in what I do and that I never take credit for anything he does (and he really does everything).

Thanks for starting this conversation, Fred!

      Melanie,
Yes – indeed, that’s one incredible line, especially when you understand the context and story in which that song was written!

“Misjudged for my misdeeds, you suffered silently, the only guiltless man, in all of history”
“Justice and Mercy meet on the cross”
From Jesus, You Are Worthy (Brenton Brown)

“Dying you destroyed our death…rising you restored our life”
Most recently this is from Matt Redman & Matt Maher’s Remembrance. However, Redman gives credit to Maher recalling this phrase from a pre-existing liturgy. It has such a triumph in the context of their song.

Favorite: “… who could ever show mercy to me, who could quiet an angry sea, it is Christ the King, holy one, who’s saving me.”

From Tide Wash Over Me by Josh Thomson

    Amazing.

From Hillsong United/Brooke Fraser’s “Hosanna” both “show me how to love like You have loved me” and “break my heart for what breaks Yours” get me every time.

    Honestly?

“Heaven meets earth like a sloppy wet kiss and my heart turns violently inside of my chest…”

    Well, you asked!

One of my all-time favorite worship lyrics is from the song “Saviour King” by Hillsong:

Let now Your church shine as the bride
That you saw in Your heart
When you offered up Your life…

One of my favorite song lyrics (out of many) recently is:

When Satan tempts me to despair,
And tells me of the guilt within,
Upward I look, and see him there
Who made an end of all my sin.

    Because a sinless Savior died,
    My sinful soul is counted free;
For God, the Just, is satisfied
To look on Him and pardon me

When my heart is overwhelmed and I cannot hear your voice,
I hold on to what is true though I cannot see.
When the storms of life they come and the road ahead gets steep,
I will lift these hands in faith, I will believe.

I remind myself of all that you’ve done, and the life I have because of your son…
