Dull. Dead. Disinterested.

Happy New Year (again)

Not a single day has passed since January 1 where I didn’t think about this blog … this … piece of online real estate … this … expression of me.

The pressure … the expectation … the voice in my head … the conversation goes something like this:

IV (Inner Voice):  “Fred, you need to get some blogs written.  Discipline yourself and get it done”.
Fred:  I know.  But I just don’t feel like it.

IV:  that’s why it’s a discipline.
Fred:  I want to be undisciplined.  I feel lazy and want to be lazy.  I’m just not interested.

IV:  But, you will lose momentum, traffic, and clout if you don’t keep consistent blogging.  Didn’t you read Michael Hyatt’s post the other day?
Fred:  yeah, that post was a real slap in the face.  still, I don’t seem to care.

IV:  C’mon, you can do  it.  You’ve been wanting to do a recap of that awesome Christmas Eve service!
Fred:  nobody gives a rip.

IV:  You’d be surprised.  Plus, you’d promised some of those hilarious small-town stories.
Fred:  maybe tomorrow

IV:  You have got to pull out of this funk.  You are dull.  Dead.  Disinterested.
Fred:  maybe the fast we start next week will snap me out of it.  Until then ….

IV:  Fred, a lot of people will relate to this post.  It’s bound to get some comments and traction.
Fred:  Just for that, I’m not even going to retweet the link.  So … there.

Can so, so, so relate to you on this one. This is a discipline that I need to work on as well. Thanks for the motivation.

      Ryan,
Thanks a ton, bro. I’m always encouraged when I do see your writing!

Thanks, Fred! That’s good motivation for me. :-)

I was there last week. I feel ya Fred.

      Tyler …
Last week? Oh for it to have only been a week … I admire your persistence to keep publishing. Great stuff, man! God’s blessings on your New Year!

    Fred,

    I am interested!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are not dull. You are not dead. YOU are very interesting!!!!

    Hang in there!!!

I’ve been there. These things too shall pass. Sometimes you just need a break.

      Thanks, Randy …
re:create isn’t close enough … can’t wait. This January funk seems to be the culmination of hard (self-inflicted) Decembers, and I usually hear several people comment on the “new me” when I return from Franklin!

    what randy said!

it’s okay to unplug for a bit. a selah for your soul.

we’ll be here, still interested. because we’re interested in YOU.

      Alece,
You’re the best. Wow. I’m already touched by the responses. Hope to see you in TN this Feb, since we missed you in New Jersey!

I think most of us can relate – if not blogging, then trying to stay pithy on the FB or Tweets. I say, take the time you need!

I set a goal of blogging each day this year (part of the WordPress daily post challenge)…hopefully I stick with it! My counsel to myself: only pay attention to the important irons!

    Blessings!

    • http://www.fredmckinnon.com Fred McKinnon

      Dennis,

Woo hoo, that is a for-real challenge. You go for it. Right now … I just want to ignore all the irons, even the important ones … this too shall pass.

  • http://brain-drops.com Michelle

Yup, I can relate too. And as you said, re:create ’11 can’t get here soon enough.

    • http://www.fredmckinnon.com Fred McKinnon

      Michelle,
Oh, I hope I’m not shooting myself in the foot here .. but are you re:create alumni, or will it be your first time? I don’t pretend to remember every person who attends .. but I just didn’t recognize your name (and I didn’t find any pictures on your site!) … so, I sure look forward to meeting you and putting a face to the name/site … and well, if I did just shoot myself in the foot, and we’ve met before … just chalk it up to the funk.

      • http://brain-drops.com Michelle

I was there last year (it was my first year there). I spent more time just absorbing than I did meeting people. Last year I was there as the creative arts director for a church in NW GA, this year I’m coming on my own, since I’m not currently working for any church. But it’s such a time of refreshing and inspiration that I wouldn’t miss it. Looking forward to meeting you too. I’m also on twitter as @me_b

        • http://www.fredmckinnon.com Fred McKinnon

          Michelle,
Awesome – can’t wait to meet you, then! And listen, thanks for posting, I really appreciate it. I’m following you on Twitter right now.

O, how I understood that one.

    • http://www.fredmckinnon.com Fred McKinnon

Ah, it feels good to be understood, eh?

  • Robin

I hear you loud and clear. I’m beyond “feeling the burn” and am knee deep in the ash of “burnout”. Glad you have the re:create to look forward to and will continue to lift you.

      Robin,
I hear ya … good to know you’re not alone, yet, none of us want to be there. How can I help you?

  • http://mandythompson.com mandythompson

I don’t think blogging should ever be about pressure… if it is, switch it up. Make some changes that will bring this back to play and not work. :) I know you’ve got it in you!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Fred-McKinnon/631515675 <fb:name linked="false" useyou="false" uid="631515675">Fred McKinnon</fb:name>

      Mandy,
Thanks .. the pressure comes from that IV (Inner Voice) … and really, blogging is just one of the many plates, as you know … it’s an overall feeling that applies to many things. In a weird kinda way, even posting yesterday’s blog and responding to the comments has lightened the mood and made me feel more like “me” again. Thanks for the encouragement!

      Fred,

I have the same problem – I know I should blog more, but other pressures seem to get attended to first because they seem more important. You’re not alone.

But, I am interested, and look forward to reading your blog posts! I would love to hear about that Christmas Eve service!

You’re an inspiration! Don’t let the enemy use blogging to get you down!

      Barry

        Hey Barry,
Thanks a ton for the encouragement – I mean it! Hope to see you this year.
