This is what God told me today …

Posted on January 31st, 2011 in Faith, General Leadership by Fred McKinnon

Well, words can’t express the “high” I’m feeling from an incredible day yesterday – both of our Sunday AM services were incredible and last night’s “Night of Worship” at SSCC was amazing.  More on that in a different, upcoming blog post.

This morning as I was praying about leadership … God spoke to me.  You know, that small voice on the inside … and oftentimes for me, I “see” the words or phrase in my mind’s eye …

I felt like God said “pray that you (and they) would lead by revelation and not reason”.

PRAY THAT YOU WILL LEAD BY REVELATION AND NOT REASON.

Did you get that?

Revelation gives vision … a cause, a purpose … our leadership is a RESPONSE to the revelation we get.
Reason … this is where we engage our natural minds to figure out the yes and no, the why and why not, the “this is impossible”.

Reason is good … God gave us the capacity to “reason” and use our intellect.  But when our leadership comes from our intellect only, I think we’re apt to miss out.

I’m still trying to figure out exactly what that phrase means and how to walk it out – but I think I’m on to something.

What say you?

Dude. I’m there. With you all the way. Good word.

The passage that has kept echoing in my mind for the last couple weeks has been Prov 20:24.

At first thought – leading by revelation can be draining (and overwhelming) if those involved aren’t on board with the ‘ride’ that comes by following the ‘revelation’.

Jason, you are so right. You have to be surrounded by those with like-vision who are in agreement with the revelation, or else, it’s like running through mud.

Fred, Last night I got to hear a Preacher from ‘Jews For Jesus” He was sharing about Y’shua revealed through the old testament. He started and ended with Luke 24 the Emmeaus road encounter. How Jesus shared the prophecies about himself from The Books of Moses all through to Malachi. He used this to set up going through and sharing those with us as well.

The part that is relevant to this discussion was his closing thought. After teaching about this for about an hour he goes back to Luke 24 and the point where Jesus takes them for lunch. He had preached of himself to them and they didn’t get it, but then it says he broke the bread and “Their Eyes were opened.”

Bob took this verse and said, You can be the most eloquent, talented, skilled, etc. person, but unless God breathes revelation it doesn’t mean a thing.

Bob had preached for an hour, and it was all Good, but it was that last statement that hit me and shook me to my core, it literally kept me up all night. Now you hear almost the exact thing from God today. Thank you for sharing with me. I am going to be stuck on this for some time now.

      Amen.

Good word, Fred! I believe that it’s the revelation of who Jesus (Y’shua) is that is the “rock” on which the church is built (Matthew 16:13-20).

    Blessings to you!

It is the difference between, Lord these are my plans please bless them OR Lord what are your plans, I know they are blessed. Some friends of mine call it “Presence Based Leadership” with an example out of Joshua 5 where Joshua says to the Lord, “Lord what do you have to say to your servant?” Surrender to His revelation for the next step. I think it is what the Apostle Paul calls walking by the Spirit. It is our daily choice. Some days I am there some days well it could have been executed better. I never regret the honor of the struggle to get the there.

      Patrick
I’m so with you. Many, many days I realize that I’ve led out of my own vision, and not revelation. A true telling is when the “yoke” gets hard and heavy …

Such an absolutely “right” word. I use the word “absolutely” because there are eternal “absolutes” that will never change. We can see these “absolutes” in nature (the law of gravity, seed-time and harvest, seasons following seasons, the sun always rising in the east and setting in the west, etc.)
So it is in the spirit. Leading by revelation is the only way we can effectively lead. Leading by reason bumps head first into another eternal “absolute”. According to God’s word: “But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” I apologize if I have taken up too much space with this. Just had to reply. Sometimes it’s easier to get forgiveness than to get permission.

      Dad,
I totally agree .. even in that verse about the “natural man” … I’ve always taken that in context to think of the man who is lost, void of the Holy Spirit … but I can see where it would just as easily apply to the SPirit-filled, Christian, who, by choice (or even unintentional neglect) doesn’t receive the revelation for a given time … what do u think?

This makes me think of how Jesus described his activities to his disciples – “I only do what I see my Father doing.”

It was the revelation, the “seeing”, of the Father that was the hallmark of Jesus’ leadership. There had to be a lot of details, explanation, reasoning left out of what Jesus saw, yet there was nothing lacking in what the Father revealed to Him.

A picture really is worth a thousand words! Lead on, my friend.

      Harold,
I’d forgotten that verse, but it’s a beautiful one, and perfectly fits this discussion. If only we did that more often.

Some of the posts above remind me of Jesus walking with the two on the road to Emmaus. some say it was a 7 mile trip (keeping in mind what some numbers speak of in scripture). For the first six miles (6 = the number of man), Jesus walked with them and talked with them and they didn’t see it was Him! Not until the last mile, when He began to speak of things concerning Himself (He “revealed” Himself), were their eyes opened! Then I also think of the Book of Revelation in which the 1st five words say… “The Revelation of Jesus Christ…” (King James vs.)!! Which proves (to me at least) that the most “eye-opening” revelation is “that which reveals Him!” I’m also reminded of a message I have heard from a well known speaker, talking about Jesus sitting with them at the table… and He “reveals” Himself once again in a pattern used all throughout Scripture. He “takes” the bread…. “blesses” the bread…. “breaks” the bread…. and then “gives” the bread! That is exactly what the Heavenly Father did with His son! That is exactly what He does with us! Thanks for allowing me to “run on”! Love you Fred!

      Tim.
Thanks for joining the convo… I miss ya! We should all be more intentional in asking for revelation, yes!!

..Fred,revelation is the power and manifestation of God’s inner most desire of mankind, failure of which all is vanity!
thus leading by reason with out revelation..,all is vanity.
May God usher us in HIS inner most so we can lead by HIS revelations.
    Amazing grace,thx Fred
