Self-Focused Expectations
Posted on February 24th, 2011 in Faith, Life and Family by Fred McKinnonThey say misery loves company. Since it’s 1:00 AM, and I’m not asleep, and I really WANT to be asleep, I figure I’ll share some of the misery with everyone else.
If you’ve followed my blog (and as a result my life!) for very long you are somewhat familiar with my varying bouts of sleeplessness. When I’ve got a lot on my mind I can’t sleep so well. Well, I’ve had lots on my mind. That, coupled with a reversion of epic proportions to poor diet and virtually no exercise … well, ’nuff said.
A couple of days ago I posted about this book I’m reading (re-reading) called “The Exemplary Husband“. It’s a thick book and it’s not just stories or guides … it’s a massive dose of Bible study.
Since it became apparent that I wasn’t going to sleep I finally got out of bed and slipped into the living room and resumed my reading in this book. Now … I’m typing away, eager to share the misery … the misery of TRUTH when it STINGS you.
Let me share a few quotes with you. You’ll see what I mean:
“Our relationship with Christ will always affect our horizontal relationships with one another.”
“Letting someone’s strong points and demonstrations of love (no matter how small or how few they may be) fade into the background of whatever negative qualities there may be breaks the command of God to be thankful at all times.”
“Looking and waiting for another’s growth, time, care, or attention is always a bad idea. We must not live in expectation or put conditions on our love and care for others. Our focus is to be on loving God and others for God’s glory, not on having personal desires met.”
I was going to title this blog “A Late Night Butt-Kickin” but the adventurer in me must have stayed in bed. I’m curious to know if those quotes do any butt-kickin’ to anyone besides me? And ladies – just because this book is called “The Exemplary Husband” doesn’t mean those quotes don’t apply to you. They apply to anyone who has relationships … which is EVERYONE.
So what do you think about when reading those quotes?
