Survey Says: If You Could Change One Thing About Yourself

Posted on June 6th, 2011 in Life and Family by Fred McKinnon

Hey Gang,

Today is the last post of the “Survey Says” series.  If you’ve not chimed in with answers on the previous two posts of the series, we’d love to hear your voice:

Survey Says:  What Are the Top 5 Blogs You Read?
Survey Says:  If I Could Change 1 Thing About My Church, It Would Be …

Today, it gets a bit more personal.

If you could change ONE THING about YOURSELF, what would it be?

It’s almost impossible for me to list one thing.  One of the ongoing things that keeps coming to mind, other than a better discipline of taking care of my physical body, is becoming a better listener – talking less, listening more.

How about you?

Great question, Fred. If I could change one thing, it would be to not keep listening to the voice of self-doubt in my head. The one that likes to say, “You really don’t have anything to offer. You’re not as good at _______ as so-and-so.” But then, if I could change it, I probably would have already done so. When that voice speaks, I have to remind myself of who I am in Christ and who God has made me to be.

      Chris,
Wow, thanks for being authentic, my friend. In my quiet time this morning, I was blown away by what God was reminding me in this area – so blown away, I made a note to schedule a blog post about it. Hopefully it will come out this week – maybe tomorrow.

There is some serious things in the Word about our faith, confidence, and not doubting. I stand with you, relying on God, and grateful for who He says we are, and not what the voices in our head tell us.

      Fred

Thanks, Fred. People are often surprised to learn that this exists in me. I don’t know whether it comes from my introverted nature, creative tendencies, or self-esteem. I find myself hearing that voice a lot right now as we search/wait for our next ministry position.
But, in the midst, Beck and I stand firm in who God is, that He loves us, the unmistakeable, confirmed, and still active call on our lives, and our trust that He is leading and guiding. Isn’t it great that, in Christ, we don’t have to be afraid, but can live in the power, strength, and abundance of His glory and righteousness. (Wow, I even feel more encouraged writing this. Must be how David often felt after writing a Psalm).
Have a great week, my friend, full of God’s goodness.

I would be more assertive and less passive. Put more expectation in God and less in people.

      Tracie,
All those sound like great things to change. I think they probably work in all of us, for sure! Thanks for being a part of this tribe here on the blog!

Killer blog Fred and a super tough question. I gave it some thought.

When things bother me… they REALLY bother me. If someone attacks me or my family I have trouble moving on. It’s hard to turn my thoughts off that hurt.

I can even, in love, forgive the offense, but still find my heart and mind digging up the past hurt. It can be a vicious cycle as time passes and the hurt dulls. I’d love for that to change in me.

      Chris,
Wonderful, honest answer. I think so many of us can relate to that!

Hi Fred, (BTW that profile pic is of my dad in honor of Father’s Day.)
I wish I could change something on the inside of me that would make me be naturally joyful. Im just not. Part of my ‘loner’ , perceptive, thoughtful (as in always thinking) personality, and I have to work hard at socializing and being joyful.  When I’m WITH people I can be joyful, but when I’m by myself, I need music and praise to keep it up.  I’ve got plenty to be happy about!, it’s just that it is all packaged up in me as a quiet soul.  I should add that I totally am at peace and happy when i’m puttering around with stuff like gardening, pets and music.

      Jamie,
Thanks for chiming in. Maybe it’s not a lack of joy … maybe it’s just a temperament thing?
