Like Mike, I’m a “book in hand” kinda guy. Been thinking about a kindle, but just don’t think I’ll like it.
Just finished reading two great books:
“The Revolutionary Paul Revere” by Joel Miller
“Evolving in Monkey Town” by Rachel Evans
Currently reading:
“Mere Christianity” by C.S. Lewis
“Death in the Dark Continent” by Peter Capstick
In the “Summertime” queue:
“The Poor will be Glad” by Peter Greer
“The Quest for God and Guiness” by Stephen Mansfield
“Born Standing Up” by Steve Martin
“Imaginary Jesus” by Matt Mikalatos
“The Hole in Our Gospel” by Richard Stearns
Great post Fred! The battle to create margin (time, finances, health, etc…) in my life is one I’ve been fighting since I heard Greg Surrat preach a series on it almost two years ago at Seacoast Church.
I’ve had successes in some areas, and utter failures in others, but the benefit from even small victories make the fight worthwhile.
This mindset is so counter to the culture we live in, I have found that everything around me (including myself at times) seams to resist it. There is no “magic bullet” to get there. It takes time, commitment, sacrifice and constant re-evaluation of priorities (needs vs. wants) to not only get to a place of margin, but also to maintain it. I’m not a big fan of any of those things, but if it was easy, I guess everyone would already have margin.
I looked at the link above. Looks like some pretty good stuff in there. Does the model you have track change in elevation as well (Want that for my cycling)?
Hey Fred! Great job getting “back at it”. I’m in a similar spot, and actually started my exercise routine back this weekend (rode my bike about 12 miles and did some core fitness stuff). I am FEELING it today for sure!
I’m waiting for my new orthotics to come in so I can start running again. How do you like the Garmin watch? I’ve been thinking about getting one, but I’m still on the fence about it.
There is a saying in the manufacturing industry: “You are only as good as your last screw-up.” It is bad enough to work in that kind of environment in a “secular” job. It is truly unfortunate that it is rampant in the church as well. Moreover, it is horrifying that I see it in my own life! This is actually something God has been challenging me on lately (in my personal and professional life)…timely word Fred!
Sticking with any exercise routine for the long haul is really the tough part. Working out with a group (or at least a training partner) really helps to keep you motivated…I guess that applies to spiritual things as well, huh!?!?!
Community – Friends, Family & other people I have had legitimate interactions with.
Mentors – Mostly pastors, plus a few others whos tweets I find inspiring.
Music – Pretty much what you would think here.
News – Again, the obvious here.
If you don’t fit into one of these groups, I don’t follow you. I guess it comes down to what you are looking for in this type of forum. This works for me.
Sounds like you had a great service Fred! It is always awesome to see members of the congregation start “being” the church instead of just going to church!
Man, that story brought back a ton of memories from “back in the day” for me growing up in Claxton! Never forked anyone’s yard, but me and the guys were pretty well known for our work with TP and road construction saw horses (the ones with the flashing lights).
Hope one of your stories covers the topic of snipe hunting!
One thing I have found is that as long as I am trusting God to meet my needs, and being a good steward of what I do have, I always have enough (regardless of my financial situation). However, when I transfer that trust to myself to “handle it”, I find myself always in lack, no matter how good my income may be.
On a side note, this doesn’t’ just apply to finances. It works the same with relationships, work, and even time management.
