Hey Gang,

The blog has been quiet here … VERY QUIET … mainly because I haven’t been posting. We’ve wrapping up an 8-day whirlwind vacation that stretched the east coast from New York City to Orlando, FL. I hope to jump back into blogging soon enough but will need a day or so to recover and catch up. In the meantime, here’s a little recap of our trip for those who may be interested. (that would be a few friends on Facebook and my family!)

New York City – Andrea Bocelli

I was blessed to receive an opportunity to attend the FREE concert by Andrea Bocelli in Central Park last week in New York City. I’m a huge fan of Bocelli and thought this would be like a bucket list experience. One of the world’s greatest singers, with one of the world’s greatest philharmonic orchestras, in one of the world’s greatest cities, in one of the world’s most famous city parks … you know … epic!

Experiencing something like that is even more fun with friends so Joy (my wife) and I flew up to NYC with another couple from St. Simons Island and spent a couple of nights in Times Square. We left the kids behind and had a few days of “us” time. Joy had never been to NYC and it was only my second visit. We did it hard – from Rockefeller Center to the top of the Empire State Building, shopping on 5th Avenue to waving outside the Fox News windows on 6th Ave. We had Italian one night and some great pizza at Lombardi’s another day. We did taxis. We did subways. We walked a kazillion miles. The forecast was for rain and the news said that if the concert was rained out, it would be rescheduled for the next night. This was a big burden for me because we flew out the next morning to meet up with the kids and leave for our family vacation time.

Well, the rain came. The gates to the Great Lawn at Central Park were to be opened at 3:00 PM. Because of the rain, people weren’t lining up quite so early so we got there at 3:00 and waited in line for over an hour in the rain. Thankfully, Joy sported us some $1-store ponchos that we shared with our friends. (Mike/Leisa Dunn)

The rain was nasty and it got pretty chilly with the wind blowing. The blessing in the rain; however, was that people just didn’t come to get in line. We were one of the first 50 people in line on the East Side entrance and as a result, when they finally DID open the gates we got the most incredible seats on the Great Lawn possible. Friends of mine who waited until the rains held off said the lines on both the east and west sides were 30 blocks long and met! We were literally about 30-40 feet away from the stage – and we could’ve gotten even closer but I didn’t want to be so close to the high stage that I couldn’t see the orchestra and choir in the background.

The concert was as magical and epic as I would’ve guessed. My DroidX camera photos just don’t do it justice. We were RIGHT THERE center stage. The people who paid $1,000 for the “VIP” seats didn’t have seats as good as ours. (Yep, they were there in full force, Donald Trump & Alec Baldwin to name a couple).

Bocelli was joined with the New York Philharmonic and the Westminster Symphonic Choir. They were amazing. He was joined with many special guests including Chris Botti (an amazing trumpeter), Bryn Terfel, Andrea Griminelli, Ana Maria Martinez, and Pretty Yende.

Two of my favorite guest moments included Celine Dion singing “The Prayer” and Tony Bennett singing “New York, New York” with Andrea.

(this photo courtesy of BocelliCentralPark.Com)

One incredible moment of worship for me was Andrea’s rendition of “Amazing Grace”. Lastly, although he did not sing two of my favorite songs I really wanted to hear (“Sogno” and “Besame Mucho”) he did conclude with a finale of my favorite, “Nessun Dorma”.

A quick flight home from NYC and we gathered the kids and took off to Disney World for FIVE days. Yes, FIVE DAYS. “The Happiest Place on Earth”. I will recap that in a separate blog post.

As for Bocelli in Central Park? It was a whirlwind trip – really crazy to try and fly up there for a concert and back to dump out our suitcase, repack and drive away again for 5 days. But it was worth it.

As a composer, a musician, a singer, and a creative person – I was so totally inspired. It was one of the most awe-inspiring concerts I’ve witnessed and truly was a once-in-a-lifetime event. I am reminded when I watch some incredible talent and hear such beautiful music how God created us and blessed us with these talents. Ideally, they are given to us to bring honor and glory to Him. It inspires me to take my own talents and use them to bring glory to God and inspire others.

Here’s the last few seconds of the grand finale to “Nessun Dorma” – sorry for the jerky camera work, my wife and friends were trying to pack up the blanket we sat on which I was standing on!

I’ve been listening to more of Bocelli’s music so I’m more familiar with his songs and discovered this video. I’ve watched it (and shared it) countless times. I seldom finish it without my eyes getting all wet. Turn it up.

And yes – I do realize this is the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. My loving this video and sharing this video is not an endorsement of the Mormon faith at all. I am a Christian, not a Mormon. Nevertheless, this is one of the most beautiful, inspiring renditions of the Lord’s Prayer I’ve ever heard in my life. (and if by chance you feel a bit disappointed towards the end like I did, hang in there … you’ll know what I mean!)

I started playing the drums in high school marching band after we no longer needed my piano skills on the bass line for “Bird Land”. (remember those big ole’ keyboards on the roller cart w/ the amp attached?).

Ever since, I was hooked on drums and percussion and found myself marching quints on the drum line at Georgia Southern University for three great years. Few things ring me up like the sound of an intense drum line banging out a sweet cadence full of dynamic and flare.

Enter the new sample package “Rumble” from SampleLogic.Com (configured to work with Native Instrument’s Kontakt player)

I’ve seen drum line used occasionally as a feature in a worship setting. It was creative and inspiring.

How this can be used in every-day composing, I’m not sure – but I’ll give you this:

Hey Friends,

I was reading through Psalm 49 a few weeks ago and was inspired by these verses:

7 Truly no man can ransom another,
or give to God the price of his life,
8 for the ransom of their life is costly
and can never suffice,
9 that he should live on forever
and never see the pit.

(Psalm 49: 7-9, ESV)

From that passage came this new song. So glad to finally be writing again. Below is a rough-recording/mix of the debut at our services at SSCC. Feel free to use in your own personal worship or corporate worship services.

Lyrics:

Verse 1:
Deep in sin. No hope within.
Captured by the grave.
A cost so high to set me free
No man could ever pay.

PreChorus:
Only One could e’er suffice
To pay so great a price
A life for liberty ….
He ransomed me.

Chorus:
What a price He paid.
Sacrificed, I’m saved.
By His blood, I’m free.
He ransomed me.

Verse 2:
Now I am His, and He is mine.
Received in His great Name.
Embraced by faith, His love divine
Forever I’ll proclaim.

Bridge:
No greater love has ever been shown
No greater friend has ever been known
He gave His life on Calvary’s tree
He died. He rose to ransom me.

Yesterday I had the privilege of sharing a song that I wrote with Mandy Thompson called “You Save”. It’s the 3rd time we’ve done this song at SSCC and it’s received an incredible response each time, which is humbling.

Below is a video of the song as performed at our church yesterday (Sunday, Feb 20th, 2011). I cringe every time I hear myself and part of me would NEVER release something this “raw” that hasn’t been mixed or edited. “It always sounds better in the room”, right?

I’m not trying to impress anyone so I don’t mind sharing it with all it’s rawness. I actually stumbled on the words several times. I’m sharing this because so many have asked for it, so here ya go! If you’d like to do this song in your church, go for it. It’s registered with CCLI.

You Save

Verse 1
Darkness famine trials temptations
Sorrow anger lies frustrations
Where O where are You God
I feel a million miles away yet I know You are near
Are You listening do You even hear
Where O where are You God

Chorus 1
Where O where does my help come from
I cry out into the night

Verse 2
Lusts of the flesh and the greed in my heart
Selfish desires to be set apart
Where O where are You God
Has my sin hidden me for all eternity
Will You rescue will You still help me
Where O where are You God

(BRIDGE)
Your arm is not too short to save
Your reach goes deeper than the grave
When I am crying to You
You save You save
My help comes from the Lord above
Maker of Heaven and of earth
Your watching over me and run
To save to save
To save to save
You save You save

I’d like to invite you to checkout a new song recently added to the growing catalog of music from Highest Praise Productions. This is the current “Featured Song” over at TheWorshipCommunity.Com for the next few weeks.

The song is called “Greatly To Be Praised”. It’s one of those anthems that start slowly and quietly but by the time you get to the Bridge you are throwing your hands in the air singing at the top of your lungs!

I have the privilege of meeting Mike Kim (the author) in May at the AllAboutWorship retreat. We’ve ministered together since then at the Forge Conference and I really felt a kindred spirit with this guy.

This is a song you can use in your church or personal worship – hope it ministers to you!

Hey Everybody,

It’s with great excitement that I share the much-anticipated album, “Songs from the Hope Farm” by Saint Lewis is finally available on iTunes. Shannon Lewis is the Associate Worship Leader at SSCC and I have the privilege of serving God’s Kingdom with he and his lovely wife, Cyle. Shannon is also a blogger and contributer at TheWorshipComunity.Com

On a personal level, I am biased because I love Shannon, Cyle, and their family … so, I’m gonna be excited about this release regardless. I’ve seen YEARS of sweat, prayer, toil, victory, and heartache poured into this project. I was given the privilege of playing B3 organ on Track 3 and gave input into some of the mixes.

On a professional level, I’d highly recommend this project simply because of it’s diversity. Lyrics are Kingdom-minded. Melodies are diverse. Style changes from song-to-song, yet maintains a signature “Saint Lewis” sound.

My favorites?
3. Wandering Heart
4. Quiet Your Heart
5. Fly (lyrics – I love this line, “there’s so much more to be seen from the sky …”)
8. Never Cease to Sing (we did this at one of our Night of Worship events, love the pads and keyboard work of McKendree Augustas on this!)

So … if you’re a little bored with the status quo … with the same, pop-rock guitar sounds, pulsing 8th note bass lines, and predictable chord movements, click the iTunes graphic above or just head over to iTunes and pick this album up today. You’re supporting an incredible artist, worship leader, and family.

We launched a new (and much-needed) series at SSCC this past week called “Worth Fighting For” – it’s about marriage and family. Our creative team spent some time coming up with a set which includes a way-cool boxing ring on stage and tons of full-sized posters with various families from our church in “boxing robes and gloves” in the building.

With some help from friends, Chris Moncus shot this video at a local gym and Travis Paulding gave it his editing mojo. So we could truly “own” this series and the creative elements, I was asked to compose an original musical soundtrack for the trailer.

So, I present this sermon trailer, featuring one of the founding families of this church (Larry and Beverly Wade) … no, they aren’t fighting each other … they are fighting WITH each other … for marriage … for family.

I tracked this in ProTools with several keyboards, samplers, and groove modules, and tweaked tempos and time-stretching to try and get the big horn motif to “match” the transitions in the video.

Gungor’s CD (which he presented from start to end for us with the full band and multimedia experience) released today, Feb 15. It’s called “Beautiful Things”. I’d encourage you to spend the $10 and download it right away from iTunes. It’s so worth it.

Here’s their “EPK” video. Enjoy the heart of a husband/wife and band that show some of the most inspiring, creative, passionate worship I’ve encountered … ever. Also, my friend Russ Hutto just published an amazing review of the album and the live experience we had with Gungor over at TheWorshipCommunity.Com. Go checkout that review after watching the EPK below.

I am featuring a song called “Salvation Day”. Right off the bat, it opens with a great sound. A friend of mine who was with me at the time of my first listen started nodding his head saying, “I’m not normally a fan of female worship leaders, but I love it when they rock out and have that edge”.

The chord chart is here.

At the request of mangement, we’ve been asked to only stream a 30-second sample. Hopefully you’ll go buy the EP and hear the full album! (RSS subscribers, this is where you click over to hear the tune!)

[See post to listen to audio at www.fredmckinnon.com]

VERSE 1:
God so loved, loved this world that He gave His Son
Whoever would put their trust, put their trust in Him
Would live forever, would live forever

CHORUS 1:
Oh I was dead but now I live
Oh, all my sin has been forgiven
Oh, now with all my heart and soul I sing
Thank You for my Salvation Day

VERSE 2:

I so love, love your world that I’ll give my life
So they would, yes, they would see Your sacrifice
And livefor – e – ver, and livefor – e – ver

BRIDGE:

Here we are rescued and ransomed
Sing it out, this is our anthem
Shout it out, we’ll live forever

Your wounded hands have broken my chains
Your holiness has carried the weight
And I am the sum of failing and of grace
You overcame

Jesus saves my Jesus saves
Jesus saves my Jesus saves

Your innocence has covered my shame
Your love has spoken me by name
And I have victory over the grave over the grave
You overcame

Jesus saves my Jesus saves
Jesus saves my Jesus saves

I was dying You came for me
Now I’m living for my savior
Hope is rising up within me
You’re my Savior and Lord

I’m up early and headed out to Jekyll Island, GA for the annual “Way Radio 90.7 FM Beach Concert” on Jekyll Island. This year I was asked to put together a “house band” for two of the Centricity Music artists, Daniel Kirkley and Jaime Jamgochian.

So I’ve put this band together and we’re going to try and rehearse with these artists this morning on Jekyll for the first time and miraculously pull off the task of learning about 12 of their songs in a couple of hours. (yes, you read that right – we haven’t had an opportunity to rehearse with the artists until this morning).

So if you’re in the area – jump in the car and drive over to Jekyll Island. The concert starts at 2:30 … I’ll be leading the band for Daniel and Jaime, and then “Downhere” will be headlining and closing out the concert with their full band afterwards. Bring a beach chair and have some fun.

Jaime Jamgochian will also be staying over and leading worship for us at SSCC tomorrow morning at both the 9:00 and 11:00 services!

See you there!
Fred

Hey Gang,

I mentioned a couple of days ago in this post that we were going to be debuting Christy Nockel’s “A Mighty Fortress” this Sunday at SSCC. It has some huge stuff happening and I didn’t want the sound to be anything less than “epic” so I decided to create a loop that we can use in Ableton Live.

Of course in Live, I will use individual audio files and can choose what I will and will not have playing.

Many of you asked, so here’s the .mp3 version of the mixed loop.
This loop assumes:
4-bar intro
Click in Right
Assumes live drummer to supplement loops, guitarist, and bass player.
(those instruments not included)

[See post to listen to audio at www.fredmckinnon.com]
(download)

Let me know what you think. I’m still pretty new at this whole loop-creation process.

Then I got a copy of the new Don Poythress album, “Wash Away”. (iTunes Link) It’s got a country vibe to it which is a great change of pace from pulsing bass lines and the now-signature “Hillsong” guitar tone.

I’m really enjoying this album – quite refreshing. Kudos to the folks at Integrity Music for going out there with an incredible songwriter and worship leader and producing a record that sounds different than all the typical music we here in the “praise and worship” genre.

There’s a great arrangement of the classic “Doxology” that I used yesterday in our worship services at SSCC that has received tons of positive feedback already.

One of my favorite tracks, though, is my newest “that song does it to me” song. It’s called “Fill Me Up”. It’s a co-write between Don Poythress and Jared Anderson of New Life in Colorado. (hint, Jared also recorded this on his upcoming “Live from My Church” album due to be released in September, and I’ve heard it and love it there, too)

My friends in the publishing division of Integrity Music has been gracious to grant permission for me to put the entire song here for you to stream and listen to. Hope you enjoy it. While you’re at it – hop over and read the full review of this album on TheWorshipCommunity.Com, submitted by Mandy Thompson.

Hey Everybody,

So I decided to do it … I launched out of my comfort zone and led my first “live” worship and prayer session on the internet from my home studio. Many of you were there, worshiping right along and praying with me. Without the security and covering of a band and the incredible arsenal of background vocalists that I’m so blessed to work with – I led out in spontaneous worship, musical interludes, and prayer. I felt like I was naked.

Using the technology offered through LiveStream.Com, I simply sat at the keyboard in front of my MacBook Pro’s “iSight” camera and launched out into the deep. And guess what – it was sweet. God was there, in our midst, as worshipers from all over the world (I know of at least one worshiper in Peru who joined us) sang, praised, prayed, and worshiped.
