As you noted in your blog, the appropriate guide will depend on the situation. I have an unofficial network of friends/mentors to which I turn when I need an objective, thoughtful perspective. This group excludes, by the way, some of my best friends. Why? Because some people are loyal to the point of being nearly blind to your faults.

I'm not familiar with your business outside of the church or your current situation. If you've not already connected to folks via LinkedIn, you might try to develop a network there. You would be surprised the connections that can be developed. The domain knowledge and expertise you seek may reside in an unexpected source.

Ultimately, the value of guidance or wisdom depends on two things: 1)your willingness to be honest and forthright in sharing your challenges and 2) your mentor having the confidence and fortitude to speak truth to you.

Like you said, whoever makes most sense. For business decisions, I've found two folks I go to. One is my mentor I actually found in the workplace - amazing believer full of wisdom.
The second I met through a local networking organization for the training industry (American Society for Training and Development.)

Pick a person who knows more than you and get up close! Surely there's a business owner in your church who knows the business principles (regardless of if they understand online biz or not) who can help you through the decision-making process. I believe NFIB is an organization that might add value for you!

If it's anything that has to do with "business", I talk to my boss-man. He is a proven business guru. Our brother Billy is also another wise man when it comes to things business, too!

Spiritually speaking, I really don't have anyone that I would say is a "mentor". I've been looking for a while, and have several people I could talk to on an even keel with me, but a mentor should be one who you are close to and knows you well.

I would start off with my wife. She is extremely discerning. Maybe make a few calls to folks like you, Fred. Right now I'd have to say that "there's wisdom in a multitude of counsel". I have the multitude of counsel, but no mentor.

Hope that doesn't sound "prideful". I don't think there are few more spiritual than me. Far from it. It's just where I am in this time of my life.

Well, I would have to say my wife is the first person I talk to about things. She just happens to be a professional counselor, so that doesn't hurt. For me, it just helps to talk through the situation with someone who can give you godly advice. It's not so much that I want them to give me the answer, but just to process it together. I hope you can find someone to help you with your business decision!

Connie and I have been so blessed to have the same pastors for the past 26 years. My pastor has been not only my pastor, but my mentor over these years. There's not much I couldn't discuss with he and his wife. Over the years Connie and I have had the privilege of bouncing stuff of of them! It is a blessing. It's always been a blessing to have a relationship with a trusted Christian business person. When I need wisdom and input on issues outside of ministry I go to that person.

My parenting experience is out of the norm in some ways, as our son has Down Syndrome, but for the most part, we deal with the same situations as all parents, and this is one of them.

When Evan was young (he's 22 now), he was scared to death of Santa Claus, clowns, and Beaker from the Muppets. Beaker is no longer an issue, clowns are mostly tolerable, and Santa is okay because of a couple of things -
Tim Allen is a cool guy as far as Evan is concerned, and once he did the "Santa Clause" movies, Santa became cool and non-scary. Also, Evan is a real people person, he just loves everybody, and two of our friends many years ago used to dress up as Santa for the daycare kids at our church. Keith, who has since passed away, and Roger are both much loved by Evan, and once they became Santa, Santa became a lovable figure.

Evan understands that Jesus Christ is what Christmas is all about, but having Santa be a fun, enjoyable part of it is a good thing in our house!

Mike,
Yeah, being in children's ministry would definitely put you in a situation where you'd have to be ready.

I'm not into totally lying about it - if a kid that age asks me straight up, I'll have an open and honest dialog about it.

As a children's pastor, I deal with this often. Many of my kids (and by "my" I mean church kids) know that there is no Santa. Especially the ones who grew up in the church, though not all. Some of the parents, like you, choose to allow the kids to believe in Santa. Like you said, each family has to make their choice.

We also have a consistent influx of new families, and with them, new kids. So often I'm faced with a situation where there's a "new" 8 year old who believes in Santa, and a room full of 8 year olds who don't. And you know how 8 year olds like to prove they're right. :)

So I've broken up many "discussions" over the existence of the jolly old elf. Personally, I will not lie to a child and tell them that there is a Santa Claus. I don't out-and-out blow them out of the water, either. I've become pretty good at side-stepping the discussion, at which point I will sit down and explain to the parents that most of the kids don't believe in Santa, kids will talk, and be ready for some questions.

My wife and I dealt with the EXACT same thing when my oldest decided to share that comment at the dinner table back in early December of last year. Luckily, my two younger daughters were either too engrossed in dinner or to used to ignoring their older brother to notice. He was pretty excited to be "let in on the secret" and play along with us.

We feel the exact same way as you and your wife feel regarding Christmas and see no problem with letting the fun & mystery surround it. We stress that Christmas is about the birth of Christ and that Santa just likes to celebrate it in his own way.

I tend to agree with Tam's comment above, actually almost verbatim what I was thinking. Personally though, It depends on the person criticizing me as to how much weight I allow their words to affect me. There are some people whose opinion means a lot to me and there are many whose opinion I really could careless about.
I feel like my thoughts are a bit jumbled tonight... darn the cold meds! :)
Hopefully this makes more sense than I think it does!

There are some people whose opinion means a lot to me and there are many whose opinion I really could careless about.
I feel like my thoughts are a bit jumbled tonight… darn the cold meds!
Hopefully this makes more sense than I think it does!

I see that Jesus will usually start out a conversation that is to have correction or rebuke by stating the positive first:

Revelations 2:1-4 is an example of this. I think we can "take the sting out" of a confrontation if we will simply talk about the good we see in them, too!

Jan,
You make some great points. I think the whole "shutting down" after you feel judged is valid. Maybe the very nature of the negativity and the hurt caused by it is a fact of life ... I guess, I mean ... I'm not sure if it's something that is ... I'm not even sure what I"m thinking, actually ... hmmm ... chewing ... chewing.

we don't say thank you often enough and i think that affects not just those who need to be affirmed, but also us. Thanksgiving is a spiritual discipline and if we "enter HIS courts with thanksgiving" it just might help us in our human relationships as well. Basically, the attitude adjustment that comes with being grateful changes us. So when we fail to stop, to pay attention, to express our gratitude, we fail those around us, but we also have an underdeveloped heart. We do not have a grateful spirit. We are absorbed in our own needs and wants and irritations. We are immature in our love.

And frankly, it takes about 100 positives to counteract even one negative because they do hurt and many times are fairly unjust and the result of alot of failure to be empathetic and understanding. And when we feel judged we tend to shut down in a relationship. After all, I'm not going to be open with someone who I feel doesn't appreciate me or like me....

We even add this weighing factor to others' feedback.

100 compliments can be erased by 1 critical comment.

Why is this the case?!

There is a saying in the manufacturing industry: "You are only as good as your last screw-up." It is bad enough to work in that kind of environment in a "secular" job. It is truly unfortunate that it is rampant in the church as well. Moreover, it is horrifying that I see it in my own life! This is actually something God has been challenging me on lately (in my personal and professional life)...timely word Fred!

I am right in line with what you are saying. I am especially guilty of this at the church. It is totally wrong, I know it, and yet, I allow it inside my head, and I let it effect my mood, and my performance afterward. There is proof in my tweets from earlier in the day today.

Sarah,
So right ... you know, one negative remark can sour an entire batch of goodness. I think of our church "eval" meetings and it's like we have to find SOMETHING to critique, or we feel like we've missed it somehow.
