Sunday Setlists – Debut of “You Save” at SSCC
Written by Fred McKinnon on June 13, 2010 – 5:44 PM -
Today is Sunday, June 13, 2010 – and this is our worship service recap from SSCC. I’m posting this along with hundreds of other worship leaders in the “Sunday Setlists” event that happens every week over at TheWorshipCommunity.Com.
Today was a blast because I was able to debut the first song I’ve written in nearly 6 years. It’s called “You Save” and it’s the fruit of my first songwriting collaboration with Mandy Thompson. More on that in a second …
Our walk-in song this morning was “Marvelous Light” … Shannon Lewis has always “owned” that song and done an awesome job leading it.
Opening Set:
“Alive Again” (Matt Maher and Jason Ingram)
“You Save” (Fred McKinnon and Mandy Thompson)
After some announcements, missions video, sermon promo, and challenging word by Pastor David Yarborough, we celebrated Communion. During communion we worshiped with:
“You Gave Your Life Away” (Paul Baloche and Kathryn Scott)
“Be Thou My Vision” (hymn)
“Revelation Song” (Jennie Lee Riddle)
One of the cool additions today was violin, courtesy of Ms. Carol Parks. Below is a video of the new song, “You Save”. Enjoy!
Verse 1:
Darkness, famine, trials, temptations,
Sorrows, anger, lies, frustrations,
Where, o where are You, God?
I feel a million miles away yet I know you are near
Are you listening? Do you even hear?
Where, o where are You, God?
Chorus:
Where o where does my help come from?
I cry out into the night …
Verse 2:
Lusts of the flesh and the greed in my heart
Selfish desires to be set apart
Where, o where are You God?
Have my sins hidden me for all eternity?
Will you rescue? Will you still help me?
Where, o where are You, God?
(Chorus 2x)
Bridge:
Your arm is not too short to save
Your reach goes deeper than the grave
When I’m crying to You
You save! You save!
You save …. You save …
(repeat)
My help comes from the Lord above
Maker of heaven and of earth
You watch over me and run
to save! To save!
To save …. To save …
You save …. You save ….

Guest Blog: The Key of Girl by Mandy Thompson
Written by Fred McKinnon on August 7, 2008 – 7:28 AM -
Today’s “Guest Blog” is from Mandy Thompson. I’ve known Mandy for years and I had the privilege of doing worship together on St. Simons Island from time to time. She was one of the vocalists on the “Worship Under the Stars” recording back in 2005. I also had the honor of working with her on producing/recording/arranging some of her original songs for a demo CD. Be sure to check out her blog and music with the links below.
The Key of “Girl”
I fell in love with contemporary worship music as a socially awkward teenage girl struggling through each strum of a guitar on her own. Growing up in a traditional church, I’ve always loved the hymns. I’d even get the tingles whenever my vocal teacher would sing a solo. Music was my favorite part of the service and it didn’t matter what type. It was through the songs that I first memorized truths about God: What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the Blood of Jesus; On Christ the solid rock I stand. All other ground is sinking sand; Jesus paid it all. All to Him I owe; How Firm a Foundation; All I have needed thy hand has provided. Great is thy faithfulness. The “training” I’ve received as a musician/worship leader started as a young girl covered in goosebumps, soaking up God’s presence in the rise and fall of melodies.
Now, as a worship leader, I’m primarily a worshiper and secondarily a musician.
As I grew in my knowledge of the bible, I also began to notice the importance of music throughout the scriptures. Miriam celebrating, Moses teaching the Israelites, David ministering to Saul’s spirit, angels announcing the Messiah’s birth, Jesus and His disciples singing, Paul instructing us to sing songs, hymns, and spiritual songs, John observing a passionate worship party in Heaven, and the list goes on. I realized that there’s something to all this… There’s something to Moses’ teaching, David’s comfort, the angels’ declaration, Paul’s instructions, and John’s revelation. Yes, music makes the human soul feel good, but it also teaches us, it encourages us, it imparts truth to us, it challenges us, and it glorifies God.
As a worship leader, I’m primarily a worshiper, secondarily a teacher, an encourager, a truth-teller, a challenger.
These nuggets of truth – these glimpses of Biblical music – became the foundation for my worship ministry. My efforts as a worship leader point in the direction of helping others become more aware of God’s presence through music, just as I did as a girl and still today. I long to “re-create” my childhood experiences for them. I long to help open their eyes to the veracity of Scripture, the magnitude of God’s glory, and the heart of true worship, by bringing passion, truth, and revelation to the service – all in the key of “girl.”
Comment – how do you worship, teach, encourage, and challenge in your worship?

Friday Kick-Start
Written by Fred McKinnon on May 9, 2008 – 7:26 AM -Hey Everyone,
So, it’s been a wild week. I typically take one day per week and “unplug” from blog world. Normally, I’ll catch up pretty easily but this week has had it’s share of detours, so I start out Friday morning with nearly 500 unread blogs in my Google Reader. So, yep – I did it again – I declared RSS Bankruptcy and “Marked All Read”.
Today Joy leaves for the weekend – she’s going down to Orlando with some of her girfriends who are running a triathlon race. Joy’s not in the race – she’s just going to hang out with some girls and have fun. I’d say she’s much-deserving of this get away. It leaves me this weekend with all four of my beloved munchkins … so pray for them! Seriously, I’m looking forward to it – we’re gonna have a blast.
Stay tuned this evening for a super-blog-post … one that is VERY IMPORTANT to me. I am going to set it to automatically release around 1:30 AM, EST … but on auto-release, my email subscription folks don’t get an email (I don’t know why that doesn’t work!?).
In the meantime, here are a few things I’ve been meaning to mention:
- Please vote for my song, “Fix My Eyes” on IndieHeaven.Com’s FanFaves chart daily. As of today, it’s at #29 on the charts and rising.
- I just watched my friend Mandy’s video, in partnership with Brent‘s wife, Tam … it’s on the new MTTV Video Blog … and is hilarious, so check it out and encourage those gals.
- Travis and Chris hit homeruns as always with their media and print-related work for our current sermon series at SSCC, “Just Breathe”.
- Worship this past Sunday was amazing. I need a dedicated confessional or text-fessional to describe it, but I think I waited too long.
- There is a “revival” happening in Lakeland, FL – over 8,000 people attending every night. Lots of salvations, miracles, signs, wonders, healings. I’ve not been, nor have I watched it on God.TV, but I understand you can see it every night. I have a LOT of thoughts in my head about this type of thing, and I need to write them down … but I can sum it up by simply saying, “I believe, Lord help my unbelief”. More on that later.
- EXTRA (added about 30 minutes AFTER publishing this) … Perry Noble had a great post called “Five Phases in Dealing with a Critic” … I just had to share this post, as I’ve experienced all FIVE of these phases within about 72 hours this week. Dang, I can relate!
So Mandy & Tam’s tips on MTTV said keep your blog posts short … this is still within one “screen”, so I hope I’m doing OK … any constructive criticism, ladies?
