Loops – Hosanna by Paul Baloche

Written by Fred McKinnon on October 8, 2008 – 3:28 PM -

Hey Everybody,

I spent the entire day (well, except for a couple of hours around lunch time for worship and prayer) in my studio today creating my “first official loop” for use in corporate worship.

The loop is to “Hosanna” by Paul Baloche and Brenton Brown.  I’ve loved this song since I first heard it a couple of years ago but have yet to incorporate it into personal worship.  I haven’t even owned it until I bought the CD yesterday.

I’d like to introduce this to our congregation on Sunday but thought the added loops and synth would give it a bigger sound.  So, here’s my first stab at making loops.

A couple of program notes:

  1. I couldn’t lock into the tempo on the album (A Greater Song) for anything – it was somewhere between 112-114 bpm.  I wanted it a little bit faster so created my loop at 118 bpm.
  2. There is a 4-bar countoff, then a 4-bar intro where the acoustic guitar should come in.
  3. I cut the electric guitar solo in the middle of the song in half.  Instead of a full pass through the Chorus, I only did a half chorus (8 bars) plus the sustained 9th bar.  Don’t shoot me electric players – I’d love to have the full solo, but I’m trying to balance the solo time so that my congregation stays with us.

There are two three versions.  Click is in the Right Side, but the Voice version adds vocal instructions in the South Georgia Redneck accent that only I could bring.  Download links are now available – if you download, all I ask is that you leave a comment below, letting me know.

Hosanna – 118 bpm with click and voice instructions:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

(download with click and voice instructions)

Hosanna – 118 bpm with click

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

(download with click only)

Hosanna – 118 bpm with no click or voice instructions

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

(download – no click or voice)

abletonNow Available – Ableton Live Set

Download (267 MB – .zip format)

Updates since first published:
1.  added third version with no click or voice instructions
2.  re-bounced click and click with voice – I realized that by stopping the song right after the last note (so avoid hearing extra clicks) I’d chopped off the delayed synth which is on a 188 bpm delay, matching the tempo, which should sustain for about 3 counts.

Bar/Measure Map:
m. 5:  4 bar intro (bring in acoustic, drummer’s HH)
m. 9:  Verse 1 (Praise is rising …)
m. 33:  Chorus a
m. 41:  Chorus b
m. 50:  Verse 2 (Hear the sound of …)
m. 74:  Chorus a
m. 82:  Chorus b
m. 91: Instrumental Solo (only 8 bars, plus 1)
m. 100:  Pre-Chorus (when we see You …) – instruments out
m. 108:  Pre-Chorus (when we see You …)
m. 117:  Chorus a
m. 125:  Chorus b
m. 133:  Repeat Chorus a
m. 141:  Repeat Chorus b
m. 150:  4-bar Instrumental Vamp
m. 154 – Hosanna (4x) to end

Ok all you loopsters … suggestions, comments, feedback?

Quick Happenings

Written by Fred McKinnon on April 24, 2008 – 8:28 AM -

Hey Ya’ll,

I’m back … I hope to do an extensive post (or series) on this whole concept of my “fasting” blogs and Twitter on Wednesdays … maybe next week … I’m working on a special “project” regarding that, and hope to have everything settled by next week.

In a bit of a hurry this morning, so I thought I’d just post a few “quick happenings” over the last 24-48 hours … that may (or may NOT) be of interest to you all.

1. Great day of fasting, prayer, and unplugging from blog world yesterday.
2. Jon Michael had a baseball game last night – they won 7-1 … which puts “Elite Landscaping” with a 1-1-1 record. JM got a double, and then he got a monster hit over the 3rd base line, which they called a foul ball.
3. I called in and spoke to Dave Ramsey LIVE on the Dave Ramsey show yesterday. I feel like a celebrity. And a dufus – if I understood a little more about S-Corp accounting, I wouldn’t have had to ask the question. I was very nervous, and after I hung up, Joy laughed ’cause my hands were shaking. Dave’s a celebrity for us, and has transformed our lives. It may as well have been the President of the United States.
4. We’re going to visit G’Ville and celebrate Joy’s Dad’s 81st Birthday. Happy Birthday Mr. Wilbanks!
5. I did it. I ordered Logic Studio. (great discussion of Logic Studio versus ProTools on this post)
6. Shannon is leading worship at SSCC this Sunday. It will the first Sunday I’ve missed since moving into the new facility, and I won’t even be @ rehearsal.
7. Got some positive feedback regarding my song, “Fix My Eyes” on CCLITV – Now this song is featured on the “FanFaves” charts at IndieHeaven.Com and you can vote for this song on the “Praise/Worship” fanFaves charts at IndieHeaven.Com.
8. God’s Word is coming ALIVE to me lately. I’ve been posting contributions to YouVersion.Com almost daily – and if you’d like to keep up with them, you can subscribe to my contribution’s RSS feed below. I’d like to always blog when I get a nugget from the Word, but that won’t always happen – so this is a way to catch those as soon as they are posted:

Well, time to get outta here. Thanks for being here – thanks for commenting – thanks for caring – and thanks for being great friends!

For the Kingdom,
Fred

Goodbye ProTools, Hello Logic Studio?

Written by Fred McKinnon on April 22, 2008 – 5:13 PM -

I’m a faithful die-hard. I don’t like change. I didn’t like change years ago when Gibson bought out Opcode and StudioVision Pro was “no more”. That’s when I made the change to the big-time industry standard recording platform, “ProTools“.

Now that I’m not sitting in my studio all day, ProTools isn’t very practical. I find myself getting more and more portable. I have a M-Audio Keystation Pro 88 in my office … with no sounds. GarageBand isn’t really as versatile as I need, although it worked last week for a 4:30 instrumental solo. Launching Protools would require hardware – I could borrow Chris’ MBox, but that’s a pain.

One of my good friends, and an incredible artist/songwriter/worship leader, McKendree Tucker, keeps telling me I should make the switch to Apple’s Logic Studio … and I’m very tempted. He uses both – Logic for tracking, recording, looping, creative … and ProTools for some tough editing and transfers when needing a ProTools studio.

Here’s the deal … $499 retail is an AMAZINGLY LOW price for all the stuff you get with Logic Studio. I mean, it comes out of the box with more instruments and plugins than I already have with a big investment in ProTools stuff. Plus, it’s portable – I don’t need hardware to record MIDI, to mix, or to edit. I have major creative recording and editing tools at my fingertips.

Sounds like I’ve made up my mind … I’d like to hear from those of you who have experience with either, both, or who made the switch.

Whatcha say?

PS: I want to stay engaged in the blog comments, but as some may recall, I’ve been unplugging and “fasting” blogs on Wednesdays, and I’ll be traveling most of the day on Thursday, so hopefully I can get back into the discussion by then … but we got all night!
