Worship Recap (Sunday May 26)

Sunday SetlistsHowdy Gang,

It’s been a few weeks since I posted our weekly recap from our worship services at SSCC.   I am posting this week in connection with the Sunday Setlists event hosted by TheWorshipCommunity.Com where worship leaders share their musical sets from all over the country.

We just had a great worship service and enjoyed a powerful time of musical praise and worship.  Sometimes I think I take for granted how amazing our team of musicians and singers are.  This was one of the easiest weeks in quite some time.  Our rehearsal went very smoothly and the blend of instruments and vocals was strong.

Our walk-in song was one of my favorite, fun songs by Matt Maher, “Hold Us Together” (C), which was led by one of our guitarists, David Dantzler.

We kicked off the top of the hour with “Glory to God Forever” (A).  We’ve been doing this song for several years off and on and it’s still one of my favorite anthems of praise.

After our announcements we sang “Beautiful Things” (C) led by Russ Hutto and “Your Presence is Heaven” (D) which was led by Todd Hendrix.   I actually enjoyed doing a lot more playing and a lot less leading today.  I sang on each song but spread the vocal leadership around.

After our sermon we closed with Russ Hutto’s incredible medley of the classic hymn, “It Is Well” and his chorus, “No Matter“.

The thing that stood out the most about this set of music was the dynamic contrast.  The arrangements provided big, loud sections as well as quiet, intimate sections.   It felt really good and makes me want to be more mindful of dynamics in our music.

It’s Memorial Day weekend and we typically don’t do any special patriotic music.  We do; however, acknowledge the day and pray for our soldiers, country, and remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

How was your Sunday?

  1. Rindy says:

We used “Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory” (Battle Hymn of the Republic) and “Open the Eyes of My Heart.” Both in G. With some accapella. Began with military-sounding drumbeat…Our God is marching on!

  2. Angela says:

We started off with an old favorite, “Lord I Lift Your Name on High,” then the Travis Cottrell version of “Praise to the Lord the Almighty.” Followed that with “Here I Am to Worship,” “Above All,” and “I Give You My Heart.”

Coolest thing about this Sunday is that during “Above All,” two little boys [7 & 9] realized what that song meant – they asked their grandmother, “Did Jesus really die for us?”, and they prayed with her to ask Jesus in their hearts. After the service, they came & showed our pastor pieces of paper where they had written their decision & signed & dated it. Hallelujah!
